MARROW
John Lewis Marrow of Richmond departed this life Sunday, September 10, 2000. He is survived by his son, Dashawn L. Christian; father, June L. Marrow; three sisters, Shirley Ekanem, Carolyn D. Marrow, Jannie R. Jackson; and one brother, Davis Marrow; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 14, 7 p.m., at Madison Temple A.M.E. MARTIN
Bobby Lee Martin of Powhatan died September 9, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Patsy H. Martin; one son, Brian D. Martin of Chesterfield; one daughter and her husband, Karen and Stephen Jenkins of Powhatan; one sister, June Small of West Virginia; four grandchildren, Ciera and Joshua Jenkins, Dallas Martin and Davy Ortega; one sister-in-law, Alla G. Martin of Richmond; and two devoted friends, Kimberly McFadden and Ladonna McClenann. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Powhatan Community Cemetery.
MELLETTE
M. Susan Jackson Mellette, M.D., 78, departed this life September 10, 2000. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Mellette was graduated from Meredith College and received her M.D. from the University of Cincinnati. Her postgraduate training included residencies at Cleveland City Hospital, at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, and at Koch Hospital in St. Louis before coming to Richmond in 1954. Dr. Mellette rose through the ranks at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) to become Professor of Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine before becoming Professor Emerita in 1992 and retiring in 1995. She was a tireless pioneer and caring physician in the treatment of cancer patients using chemotherapy and was responsible for the development of the Cancer Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Program at MCV Hospitals that has helped thousands of patients on the road to recovery. Her many accolades include: AOA, Who’s Who in America, Distinguished Medical Faculty Award, MCV Alumni Association, MCV Dean’s Award for Community Service, Greater Richmond YWCA Woman of the Year in Science and Medicine, Professional of the Year, several American Cancer Society awards, and the National Brotherhood-Sisterhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, an award which she shared with her beloved deceased husband, Dr. Peter Mellette. In addition to patient care, teaching and research duties at MCV, Dr. Mellette also served as an officer or member of numerous hospital, local, state and national committees, including the MCV Admissions Committee, as President of the VCU Faculty Senate, several NIH peer review committees, as President of the American Association for Cancer Education, and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Hospice and of the Subcommittee on Terminal Care to the Virginia General Assembly. Dr. Mellette is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Susan M. Lederhouse of Orleans, Mass.; a son, Peter M. Mellette; a sister, Elizabeth Middleton of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Margot Mellette of Williamsburg, Va. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at the MCV Health Sciences Center auditorium, 1215 E. MEYER
Laurena Louisa Hollebrands Meyer, "Laurie", died Friday, September 1, 2000 in her sleep in Richmond, Va. Laurie was born prematurely and not expected to live due to a heart valve deformity on December 15, 1909 in Leota, Minn. to Cornelia Ver Ploeg Hollebrands and Rev. James John Hollebrands; but her will to live and her feistiness served her through a long productive life. She is survived by the Rev. John Hollebrands Meyer of Douglaston, N.Y., Janice Meyer Henning of Laceyville, Pa. and Cornelius James Meyer of Midlothian, Va.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Dykstra of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. Her husband, the Reverend Cornelius John Meyer, was pastor at the Altamont Reformed Church; and Laurie fulfilled the active role of pastor’s wife. She also taught high school English, served as church elder on consistory, participated in the woman’s circle, taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and lead spiritual retreats. She was buried next to her husband on a hill with a view of the mountains near Altamont, N.Y. A local memorial service will be held at Brandermill Woods Retirement Community on Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m.

Alfred B. Newcomb Jr., age 62, of Drakes Branch, died Monday September 11, 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred L. Newcomb. Surviving are three sons, Mike Newcomb and Gary Newcomb of Keysville, Scott Newcomb of Chase City; one daughter, Teresa N. Inge of Chase City; two sisters, Judy Kennedy of Keysville, Cora Boldin of Cameron, N.C.; one brother, Berkley Newcomb of Bel Air, Md.; six grandchildren, Greg, Michelle, Karen, Heather and Logan; a faithful companion, "LOBO". PAYNE
Richard Banks Payne, a lifetime resident and businessman in the Norfolk area and a well known amateur golfer in Virginia and a World War II pilot, died September 11, 2000 in Suffolk, at age 82. A native of Norfolk, he graduated from Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia. He earned his B.A. degree in 1939 at the University of Virginia. He was an active member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Suffolk, Va. In 1941, Mr. Payne joined the U.S. Navy and entered naval aviator school at NAS, Jacksonville, Florida. After earning his wings, he was a flight instructor for several years before joining Torpedo Squadron "88" in Martha’s Vineyard in 1944. With Mr. Payne as Executive Officer, the squadron joined the USS Yorktown in the Pacific in June 1945, where he flew more than 25 missions over Japan. For his success and heroism during these missions, Mr. Payne was awarded the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Navy Flying Cross and the Air Medal - among the highest Navy and U.S. military honors. He achieved the rank of Commander. His life long love was the game of golf, and he developed into an avid amateur competitor. Upon attending Woodberry Forest School he played competitively there winning the Fall Tournament in 1933 and the School Championship in 1934 and 1935. At the University of Virginia he won the First Year Golf Tournament in 1936. He won the Virginia State Amateur Championship in 1937 at the age of 19 and again in 1950. He was a three-time Virginia State Senior Amateur Champion (1970, 1971 and 1972) and three time qualifier for the USGA National Senior Amateur Championship. He was active for many years in the Virginia State Golf Association and served as the VSGA’s President in 1973 and 1974. He served on the United States Golf Association Rules Committee and Seniors Committee. He was one of the founders of Cedar Point Golf Club in Suffolk. Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Dorothy Conner Payne; his two children, by his former wife, Esther Commander Payne; a daughter, Judith Payne Grey of Upper Montclair, New Jersey; and a son, Richard B. Payne Jr. and his wife, Mary of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is survived by three grandchildren, John R. Grey IV, Sarah Stafford Payne and Lindsay Catherine Payne; also, his sister, Mrs. Hunter Hogan Jr. of Norfolk; brothers, Dr. Robert L. Payne Jr. of Virginia Beach and M. Lee Payne of Norfolk; two stepsons, C. Edward Conner Jr. of Virginia Beach and Ray A. Conner of Chesapeake. He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Payne Sr. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on September 14, at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church. Evelyn J. Richardson, 76, widow of Charlie P. Richardson, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 11, 2000. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Wells. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Rickman, Phyllis Andrews and husband, Larry; one son, C. P. Ruth H. Dunn, age 91, of Richmond, widow of John G. Dunn Sr., died Sunday, Septemer 10, 2000. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John G. Jr. and Martha A. Dunn; two grandchildren, Vivian Wimmer and Tony Dunn; and her devoted friend, Patrina Joyner. Mrs. Dunn was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Amaranth, the White Shrine and the Walmsley United Methodist Church Senior Citizens Group.
