Elsie Robinson Davenport, born January 18, 1923 in Richmond, Va., died peacefully in her home, July 15, 2001, after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Dunlevy Davenport Jr.; brother, Warren J. Robinson; and sister-in-law, Rose S. Robinson. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra D. Brooks; son, John D. "Jay" Davenport IV and his wife, Paula Hersh Davenport; grandson,
Carter P, Brooks and his wife, Monica S. Brooks; brother, Victor B. Robinson, his daughters and their families; sister-in-law, Frances P. Robinson. Mrs. Davenport a former member of River Road Church Baptist has most recently been an active member of Ginter Park Baptist Church, the church of her early years. She was dedicated to Henrico County and many of its civic and charitable organizations. Mrs. Davenport was the 1989 Henrico Christmas Mother and served multiple terms as both chairman of the Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor Advisory Board and President of the E.A.C.M. Auxiliary. The family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 16 at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home. Stephen Joseph Drake, 22, of Newsoms, died July 14, 2001 at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. Stephen was the Service Manager of Branchville Machinery Company, attended Barnes United Methodist Church and loved his movies and books. Survivors include his wife, Kelly Stanfield Drake; his parents, Joseph H. and Linda Tomlin Drake of Newsoms; a brother, Patrick Justin "P.J." Drake; maternal grandmother, Patsy Tomlin of Franklin; paternal grandparents, R.E. and Hilda Drake of Newsoms and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, William A. "Bill" Tomlin. A graveside funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Hartman officiating. Jean C. Dunaway, 62, of Kilmarnock, died July 14, 2001. Mrs. Dunaway was the Secretary and Treasurer for the TRI STAR Supermarket in Kilmarnock. She was also a life member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lancaster. She is survived by her husband, Stuart Dunaway; four children, Michael Stuart Dunaway of Lancaster, Mark Carlson Dunaway of New York, Marcelle D. Anthony of Mechanicsville and Melissa Jean Dunaway of Kilmarnock; and five grandchildren; her parents, Hilton and Marcella Carlson of Kilmarnock; two brothers, Hilton W. Carlson Jr. of Mathews and David L. Carlson of Richmond; one sister, Janet C. Worsham of Kilmarnock. Alice Avent Everett, 89, of Capron, died Saturday, July 14, 2001 in Franklin. Mrs. Everett was born in Sussex County, a daughter of the late Vernon Thomas and Gracie Grizzard Avent, and the widow of Harvey Drewry Everett Sr. She was a member of the Joyner United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, and a longtime Sunday School teacher. She was retired from the Courtland Dry Cleaners. Survivors include a daughter, Rubie E. Drake of Capron; a son, H.D. Everett Jr. and his wife, Eunice of Capron; three sisters, Roseleen Moyler Pollard and Louise Frances Delbridge, both of Emporia, and Virginia Belle Newsome of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; two brothers, Arthur Edward Avent and Leroy Crawford Avent, both of Emporia; ten grandchildren, Susan Everett Vick, Michael Drewry Everett, Pamela Kendrick Williams, Debra Kendrick Felts, David Brian Everett, William Russell Everett, Donna Kendrick Darden, Donald Lester Kendrick, Joseph Terrance Everett and Alan Bland Drake; 22 great-grandchildren, Anthony Scott Bryant, Carolyn Bryant West, Amy Everett Hobbs, Jeremy Michael Everett, Tate Parker Felts, Kelli Ann Felts, Ashley Wynn Jarratt, Jonathan Quinton Jarratt, Michelle Marie Everett, Melissa Renee Everett, Cory David Everett, Deric Miles Everett, Clinton York Everett, Amber Danielle Everett, Jackie Leigh Kendrick, Crystal Jill Everett, Megan Brook Everett, Joseph Terrance Everett Jr., Jessica Brooke Drake, Jody Ray Darden, Shea Renee Darden and William Davis Vick Jr.; two great-great-grandchildren, Chelsea Vick and McKayla Cheyenne West. Louise C. Freeman, 73, of Richmond, passed away July 13, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John M. Freeman; two daughters, Cheryl Freeman and Darlene F. Taylor and her husband, Sgt. John Henry Taylor; son, John Freeman Jr.; brother, Frank A. Chamberlain and his wife, Dera; two grandchildren, Julian "Dean" Gilman Jr. and his wife, Amy and Justin Shawn Gilman; two nieces, Bonnie Pridemore and Diane DesRoch; and two nephews, Gene and Bruce Chamberlain. GRANDIS
Harriet G. Grandis, died Sunday, July 15, 2001 in Richmond, after a brief illness. She was born on January 8, 1923. Mrs. Grandis devoted much of her life to numerous civic organizations. She served as an honorary co-chair for the Jewish Community Federation's Campaign for Operations Exodus, helping the foundation meet its goal of $2 million. Mrs. Grandis was a Director Emeritus of the Richmond Childrens Museum, and along with her husband, Harry Grandis, created scholarships for students attending Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond. Each year for the past ten years, they have contributed tuition for three VCU School of Medicine students. She was a sponsor of the Harry and Harriet Grandis Behavior Department at the Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, Israel. In May of 2000, Virginia Commonwealth University awarded Mrs. Grandis along with her husband, the Edward A. Wayne Medal for outstanding contributions to society through humanitarianism, science, art and public service. Mrs. Grandis was a former Board member of Jewish Family Services, Congregation Beth Ahabah Sisterhood, and the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals Hospitality House. She also was a member of the Massey Cancer Center Club. Mrs. Grandis is survived by her husband, Harry Grandis; her mother, Sophie Gumenick of Miami Beach, Fla.; her three daughters, Nancy Grandis White of Naples, Fla., Linda Grandis Blatt of Morristown, N.J., and Betty Sue Grandis LePage of Richmond; eight grandchildren; and brother, Jerome Gumenick. Services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, July 17, at Congregation Beth Ahabah. Interment will be at Hebrew Cemetery. The family requests contributions may be made to the Childrens Museum of Richmond or the MCV Hospitality House.

Emilia "Eleanor" Headley, 80, of Kilmarnock, widow of Thomas Carlton Headley, died Saturday, July 14, 2001. She is survived by one daughter, Sonja Headley; and one granddaughter, Jessica Short, both of San Diego, Calif. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 18, at 3 p.m. in the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, with interment in the Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery. HERRICK
Dorothy Dodd Herrick, born March 19, 1906 in Lynchburg, Va., died at her home in Richmond on July 14, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Mortimer H. Herrick; daughters, Lou-Bette Herrick of Miami, Fla. and Judith Herrick DeVries of Oakland, Calif.; and grandchildren, Francisco DeVries, Will Thomas DeVries, Caroline Noelle Goddard and Lauren DeVries Gillham. Dorothy had resided in Richmond since 1947, where she was a longtime member of the First Unitarian Church. She began her career as a librarian at the Roanoke Public Library, where she worked for 13 years. From 1958-60, she was librarian at Brookland Jr. High School in Henrico County. She served as librarian of the Pamunkey Regional Library at Hanover Courthouse for 17 years, retiring as Library Director in 1971. Arrangements for a memorial service are pending. Stephen H. Kirby Jr., age 73, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 14, 2001. A native of Victoria, Va., he was the son of Stephen Hiram and Adelaide Anderson Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a WWII Navy veteran. He retired in 1987 following a 38 year career with American Tobacco Co., having lived in Richmond, New York City and Durham since 1983. Surviving are his wife, Norma B. Kirby; a son, Stephen H. Landon Lucas Lemasters, age 21, of Midlothian, began walking on golden streets with Jesus on July 13, 2001. He was born March 3, 1980 in Steubenville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jamin Lemasters; his stepfather, Michael Stephenson; his grandparents, Harold and Rose Lemasters; uncle, Mark Johnson; and cousin, Kiki Vicarro. Surviving are his father, Kevin Lemasters; mother, Juanita Stephenson; devoted brother, Theo Kevin Lemasters; sister, Kristin Stephenson; grandparents, Jessie Flener, Jean Johnson, Cleo and Jo Flener; uncle, Cleo and others; aunts, Lisa, Gwen, Tina, Jo, Hannah, Scharlene and Screna and others; cousins, Grin and Ryan Goggin and Chelsea, Ashley and Eathen and others. John Charles Niess, 49, of Hanover County, died on July 13, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Niess was employed as a Systems Team Leader with Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Services. Mr. Niess was best known as an adored and devoted father of son, John Michael Niess and recording artist daughter, Jennifer Lauren Niess. He is also survived by his wife, Betty Niess; sister, Kimberly Niess; brothers, Dr. Gary Niess and Rick Niess; parents, John E. and Dolores K. Niess.
