ROTHWELL
David Martin Rothwell Jr., 51, left to be with his Heavenly Father and his father, David Martin Rothwell Sr., on August 13, 2001. Born September 2, 1949 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Jane Page Rothwell of Lynchburg, Va. and the late David Martin Rothwell Sr. He was a real estate broker and contractor in the Charlottesville area. He graduated from Lane High School and attended St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. He served with the United States Marine Corps reserves and was a member of the Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors and also the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce. David Rothwell was a "man of the people." From helping a motorist in trouble, to standing in front of our legislature, to donating platelets until it was no longer possible, Dave, often known as "Big D', gave without reservation. Fiercely devoted to his family and friends, they often found him there before they even knew they needed him. The community only had to indicate a need and he stepped up. Dave was a lay-reader and chalicist and served on the Vestry at St. John's Episcopal in Waynesboro. He truly loved this new spiritual family he found in Waynesboro. Dave's life was the "widescreen" version. Everyday was a possibility and a challenge. He pushed himself to excel and took others with him, sometimes kicking, to live in the adventure with him. On a bicylce, his Harley, or hiking the trails of our country, he lived big. Fortunately for us, this unlimited spirit was so much bigger than the body that had to leave us. Given the number of people he impacted, not a day will end without someone sharing a memory of him to bring a smile of joy at who he was. No one could have used their time here better, Dave. We will try to take forward what we learned from you about giving back. Thank you. In addition to his mother, Jane, he is survived by his wife, Betty R. Rothwell of Afton; his daughter, Heather Fleming Rothwell of Charlottesville; sons, David Hunter Rothwell of Charlotte, N.C., James Ashley Rothwell of Charlottesville; stepson, Bryan David Edwards and his wife, Colleen of Bedford, N.H.; a sister, Ronni Rothwell McCombie and her husband, Chuck of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother, Roger Leigh Rothwell Sr. and his wife, Janet of Palmyra, Va.; a granddaughter, Abigail Edwards of Bedford, N.H.; nieces, Kelly Townsend Rothwell and Virginia Elizabeth Rothwell of Palmyra and Ainsley Townsend Kirby of Lynchburg, Va.; nephews, Roger Leigh Rothwell Jr. of Palmyra, Va. and Bryson Lee Kirby of Lynchburg, Va. A memorial celebration of David's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2001, at St. Paul's Memorial Church, Charlottesville, with the Reverend Jonathan Voorhees officiating. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to your local chapter of the American Cancer Society or to St. John's Episcopal Mission in Waynesboro, Va. The family will greet friends following the service at St. Paul's Memorial Church. Hill & Wood is in charge of arrangements.
