WINSTEAD
Warren Judson Winstead, 74, of Callao, founding president of Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., died December 3, 2001 in Loudon Co. Hospital. Born in Washington, D.C., he grew up in the Northern Neck and graduated from Farnham High School. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Richmond and his doctorate in education from Harvard University. He was a school principal in Callao, Hampton and Boston. After serving as the U.S. Army's Director of Education in Europe, he became the founding president of Nova University. In the 1960's his innovative fund-raising methods prompted an interview with Barbara Walters on the "Today" show and a full-page article in the education section of TIME Magazine. He was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization and the World Presidents' Organization. In 1970 he was honorably discharged as an Army officer. He also taught at George Washington University, American University and the University of Maryland. Surviving are a son, Major Scott Winstead and his wife, Dodie of Ashburn; two daughters, Mellie Winstead, Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Wendy Winstead, Studio City, Calif.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Riley Winstead; a sister, Joy Winstead, Callao; and a foster aunt, Florence Clarke, Alexandria. He was preceded in death by a son, Warren J. Winstead Jr.; and his parents, Mellie and Purnell Winstead. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 7 at 1 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, Callao with interment immediately afterward in the church cemetery. Departed this life December 1, 2001 in Williamsburg, Va., Latonya S. Winston of Richmond, Va. She is survived by her mother, Frances Winston; father, John Luck; six sisters, three brothers; a host of other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. BALSBAUGH
Elizabeth "Betsy" Matthews Balsbaugh, age 56, departed this life Thursday, September 26, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raised in Gananoque, Ontario, Canada, she was preceded in death by her parents, Jean and Hugh Matthews. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Tod; and daughters, Kim and Meg Balsbaugh. Also survived by her sister-in-law, Peggy and her husband, Gary Powers; as well as many relatives in Canada. Mourning her passing are numerous friends and loved ones, especially Rose Duesberry, Beckie Woody and Debbie Reading; and cousin, Linda Brooks, who was more like a sister. Betsy graduated from Westhampton College and was employed as a social worker for many years. She later worked at the Virginia Home for Boys, and after retiring was an active volunteer. The "Volunteer of the Year" Award was named in her honor. In August, the administration building at the Virginia Home for Boys was named for both Betsy and Tod. Her remains rest at the Bennett Funeral Home, West Chapel, 11020 West Broad St., where the family will receive friends Sunday, September 29 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, September 30. Martin Joseph Barrett, 71, died September 26, 2002. He was born in Erie, Pa. Jeffrey Lee Baughman, age 56, of 6407 Lookout Point Circle, Midlothian, Va., died September 27, 2002 at home. He was Director of Career Development with Chesterfield County Public Schools and recently retired. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sandra L. Baughman; one son, Grayson R. Willem Alexander Brandenburg, of Dataw Island, S.C., formerly from Richmond, Va., passed away September 27, 2002, after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Erna Brandenburg of Dataw Island; and his daughter, Noel Brandenburg of Charlotte, N.C. His two sisters, Herma van Beusekom-Brandenburg of Italy and Lieke Stratman-Brandenburg of The Netherlands also survive him. Mr. Brandenburg was born on April 3, 1931 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Before joining Reynolds Metals Company in The Netherlands, he started his career in the shipping industry in Cape Town, South Africa as well as in London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. He joined Reynolds Metals Company in 1965 with Reynolds Aluminum Holland B.V. in Harderwijk, The Netherlands continuing in 1967 with a transfer to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1969, he was transferred to Richmond, Virginia with an assignment to the offices of Reynolds International, Inc. where he was named Assistant Treasurer and served until his retirement in 1992. In accordance with his wishes, funeral arrangements will be private. GUNST
Evelyn Einstein Gunst, 92, of Richmond, died September 26, 2002 at her home. She was born September 10, 1910 in Wilmington, N.C., where her grandfather, Solomon Fishblate, was a popular mayor at the turn of the century. In 1923 she moved with her family to Richmond, where she graduated from John Marshall High School in the class of 1928. Two years later she married Richard J. Gunst of Richmond, her childhood sweetheart. Mr. Gunst was vice president of Sergeants Dog Care Products, a prominent Richmond pet care firm. Evelyn Gunst earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology at the Richmond Professional Institute in 1954, followed by a master's in clinical psychology in 1966. She was also a lover of music, an accomplished pianist who studied the harpsichord as well later in her life. She devoted a great deal of time to furthering the arts in Richmond as an early supporter of the Hand Workshop and the Fine Arts Program at the Virginia Museum. Evelyn Gunst was active in many civic and political organizations, among them Maymont, the Jewish Community Center, the NAACP and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She is survived by her husband, Richard J. Gunst; four children, Richard Emmanuel, Susan, Mary and Laurie; three grandchildren, Caerthan, Maia and Danis Banks; and two sisters, Alice Plapinger of Washington, D.C. and Barbara Asch of New York City. Funeral services will be private.

Roger Napoleon Herndon, 80, of Richmond, passed away September 25, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marguerite W. Herndon; a sister, Margaret Hurst; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday (today) at Westover Hills United Methodist Church. IVERSEN
Kurt William Iversen, 39, of Lexington, died on September 26, 2002, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was the director of cadet affairs at the Virginia military Institute in Lexington. He was born March 20, 1963 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth William Iversen of Parsipanny, New Jersey. He was a native of Parsipanny, where he was an Eagle Scout and wrestled and ran track while in high school. He was a graduate of the Virginia military Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and was editor-in-chief of the Cadet newspaper. He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy in San Diego from 1985 to 1986 and was a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve until 1994. He attended the Surface Warfare Officers School in Coronado, California, in 1985 and was a specialist in surface warfare. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal. He was an instructor of history and psychology in grades 5 through post-graduate at Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, N.J. from 1986 to 1994. While at AFA he was named Teacher of the Year in 1988, 1991 and 1992, served as the faculty advisor to the AFA school newspaper, Galleon, from 1988 to 1994 and was a member of its prestigious Cum Laude Society. He was AFA's head wrestling coach for three years and head cross country coach for eight years and led both teams to State-Prep place-winner slots. He served also as faculty advisor to the Cadet Council (student government) and from 1988 to 2001 he was head track and field coach for both the boys and girls programs at Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River, N.J. He returned to VMI in 1994 as the executive assistant to the executive vice president of the VMI Alumni Association. After a brief period with the VMI Foundation in 2000 as campaign manager for VMI's capital campaign, he assumed responsibilities in the office of cadet affairs and was its director at the time of his death. He was the superintendent's representative to the VMI Honor Court and previously served as defense counsel for Honor Court proceedings. He was also an officer-in-charge in Barracks for many years. He was the advisor to the Cadet newspaper and the Bomb, VMI's yearbook and was a member of the VMI publications board and an assistant coach for wrestling, cross country and track and field. He was the VMI representative to the board of the Lexington Downtown Development Association. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Cynthia White Iversen of Lexington; their sons, Kenneth William Iversen II and Kurt William Iversen Jr; and two sisters, Karen Ebbels and Kristine Loucopoulos. A Wake will be held on Monday, September 30, 2002 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lexington, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at 1 p.m. in Jackson Memorial Hall at VMI, with Chaplain Charles Caudill officiating, and will be followed immediately by a graveside commitment by Father Alan Lipscomb in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington. A reception in VMI's Moody Hall will follow immediately after the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the VMI Foundation, Inc., P.O.
