Frances Carroll Speir, a longtime resident of Richmond, passed away at the home of her granddaughter in Charleston, W.Va. on Sunday, July 22, 2001 after a long illness. Mrs. Speir was born in Albemarle County, Va. She retired from Miller & Rhoads department store as a supervisor. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Speir, Jr., retired from the C&O Railroad. Survivors include her son, John A. Speir III of Hiawasee, Ga.; her daughters, Mary Jane Arvon and her husband, Nick of Charleston, W. Va. and Becky Rosso and her husband, Tony of Yorktown, Va.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Creasman of Tavares, Fla. Scott Thompson, 28, of Powhatan, died July 23, 2001 in MCV Hospital. Mr. Thompson was employed as a form worker by Elco Concrete Company. He was a loving, devoted husband and father and will be missed by everyone he touched. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Kim Thompson; two children, Ronald Forest Scott Thompson, Zachary Emmett Issac Thompson, all of Powhatan; his father and mother, John Emmett and Melanie Dance Thompson; three brothers, Daryl Shannon Thompson, Brian Christopher Thompson, Michael John Thompson, all of Chesterfield; a sister, Jennifer Christine Mitchell of Chester; an uncle, Ronald Dance of Riva, Md.; and several nephews. Williams was professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Virginia, founder of the Cochlear Implant Program, past president of the Richmond Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Recipient of a Certificate of Honor for the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Foundation in 1992, and a longtime member and past chairman of Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital Board of Directors. He was also an avid golfer, a member of the Captains and unpublished author of "The Captains", a history of that group, an Eagle Scout and an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, a miniature train buff and a carver of miniature birds. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Interment private.
