VAN DYKE
Nina Piper van Dyke, a resident of Holland, Pa., since 1992, died on May 16, 2001. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Piper, she was born in Birmingham, Ala., on November 21, 1909. Her mother was Fanny Scott Washington Piper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Washington of Warrenton, Va. She was descended from Major Lawrence Washington, grandfather of George Washington. Her grandmother's maiden name was Nina Dulany Carter, a descendant of Robert "King" Carter, colonial governor of Virginia. Nina van Dyke attended St. Catherine's School, Richmond, Va., and Columbia University. She was a member of the New Jersey and Philadelphia chapters of the Colonial Dames of America and the Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia chapters of the Junior League. She was a member of the Rehoboth Art League, active in local French clubs throughout her life, and volunteered her time to numerous charities. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 21, 2001, at 2 p.m. at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Avenue, in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Nina Piper van Dyke is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Richardson van Dyke; sons, John Washington van Dyke of Darien, Conn., and Carter van Dyke of Doylestown, Pa.; and daughter, Nina Dulany van Dyke; and granddaughter, Alyssa Reid van Dyke, both of New York City. Memorial contributions may be sent to The Sussex Family YMCA, 105 Church Street, Rehoboth Beach, Del. 19971.

WINGFIELD
Departed this life May 15, 2001, Leon R. Wingfield Sr. of Ruther Glen, Va. He is survived by five daughters, Minister Elizabeth F. Fells, Vivian D. Woolfolk, Patricia Claiborne, Priscilla Jones and Tracie Wingfield; one son, Leon R. Wingfield Jr.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Stuart B. Wingfield; sons-in-law, Minister Frankie Fells and Robert Jones; one sister-in-law, LuEtta Wingfield; two devoted friends, Marilyn Daniels and Brigitte Yates; two nephews; a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Funeral service 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, Va., Pastor Leroy Williams officiating. WYATT
Scott Wyatt, age 33, of Chesterfield, died May 15, 2001, and has gone home to be in the hands of Jesus. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife, Terry McCall Wyatt; his children, Jordan, Matthew, Travis, Scottie and Shelley; parents, Dale Dickerson and Robert O. Wyatt; sister, Brenda H. Schools; grandparents, Virginia and John Patillo, and Christine B. Wyatt; several loving aunts, uncles, cousins; devoted friends, Helen Wyatt and John and Nancy Thorpe. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (today), and where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. He will be greatly missed.

ALSTON
Aaron J. Alston of 204 Newbridge Circle No. D died October 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susie B. Alston; five sons, three daughters, four sisters, two brothers, a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott-Lightfoot Funeral Home, 3021 "N" St. After 10 a.m. Friday remains will rest in Miracle Church of Lord Jesus Christ, 1 W. Leigh St., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Elder Freddie Vincent officiating. Interment Oakwood Cemetery.

BARTON
Lucille Furcron "Ema" Barton, 81, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 24, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, John P. Barton; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Wayne and Monica S. Barton; grandchildren, Joshua P. and Melissa L. Barton; stepgrandchildren, John M. III and Mary F. Hubbard; stepgreat-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Hubbard. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park.

BOILEAU
Helen Booth Brewer Boileau, widow of Walter E. Boileau, passed away on October 8, 2001. Her first husband, Dr. Andrew E. Brewer, died in 1960. Mrs. Boileau was a member of Ginter Park Baptist Church for over 60 years, a charter member of Blanche Spencer Chapter #11 OES and a member of the Order of the Amaranth. For 34 years, she was a volunteer on the paraplegic ward at McGuire Veterans Hospital. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and William Kerner; her grandchildren, Will Kerner and Catherine Dee, Thane and Loaina Kerner, Hilary Kerner and Caroline Shears; and her companion, Hazel Childress. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. A memorial service will be held at Ginter Park Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Friday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ginter Park Baptist Church or a favorite charity.

BOWYER
Jane Taylor Bowyer died October 22, 2001 at her home in Prince George. She was a systems analyst for the Bank of America. Surviving are her sons, Daniel Wayne Taylor Jr., David C. Bowyer and wife, Denise; three grandchildren, Michael Bowyer, Dawn Bowyer and Johnathan Bowyer; mother, Georgia W. Glenn; two brothers, Robin Two-Fires, George Waldrop; two nephews and one niece. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, October 26 in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Washington Memorial Park, Sandston. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

BUTLER
Kenneth "Tooty" Butler, 72, died October 24, 2001 in his home in New Kent. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Anne Durrette Butler; his sons, Kurt and Marc; his daughter, Karen; grandchildren, Erica, Kyle and Rachel Butler; one sister, Sharon B. Duling; nieces, nephews and friends. He was general contractor, building homes in the Hanover area and a retired captain of the Richmond Bureau of Fire with 32 years of service. He was a Past Master of Washington and Henry Lodge No. 344 AF&AM, a member of Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, October 27 at Signal Hill Memorial Park in Hanover. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, 2446 Old Church Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

CARRERAS
Elizabeth G. Carreras, 90, of Richmond, died October 24, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Grasberger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Carreras. Survivors include her sister, Margaret G. Horne; and 10 nieces and nephews. Mrs. Carreras was a retired Western Union employee. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Avenue, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with a Christian Wake at 7 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Interment Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

CAUDLE
Otis M. Caudle, 80, of Richmond, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Caudle; and is survived by two daughters, Melva V. Richardson and Faye C. Stephens; three sisters, Helen, Estelle and Betty Lou; two brothers, Russell and Marshall; three grandchildren, Barbara, Donna and Melvin; three great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Gordon Lee Marshall. Mr. Caudle was a member of Local No. 10, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union and Richmond East Moose Lodge No. 1947. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Westhampton Memorial Park. Moose Memorial Service 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

CLEMENS
Lula G. Clemens, 84, of Richmond, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2001. Services private.

CRONIN
Raymond Patrick Cronin, 93, of Midlothian, passed away October 22, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alta Billings Cronin; his children, Mary Jane Bolamperti of Omaha, Neb., Pat Newman of Indianapolis, Ind., Janet Frieden of Charlottesville, Va., Donna Girling of Midlothian, Va. and Kenneth Cronin of Roanoke, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His surviving brothers are Mr. Charles Cronin of Dallas, Texas and Mr. Leo Cronin of Melrose, Iowa. Mr. Cronin was a teacher and Superintendent of Schools in Iowa before joining Fairmont Foods in 1943. Mr. Cronin was transferred to Charlottesville, Va. in 1961 and served as the manager and controller for Morton Frozen Foods in Crozet, Va. until his retirement in 1972. He graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. and received his Master's Degree in Economics from the University of Iowa. Mr. Cronin was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, was very active in the AARP and was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, October 26 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 27 at 10 a.m. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens on Patterson Avenue. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Edward's Catholic Church building fund or your favorite charity. Woody Funeral Home's Huguenot Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

DOWNING
Thomas N. Downing died on Tuesday, October 23, 2001. He was born in Newport News in 1919 and attended Newport News High School. He graduated from the Virginia military Institute in 1940. During World War II, he served as a Troop Commander of Mechanized Calvary with the United States Third Army and commanded the first troops in the Third Army to enter Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in France. He graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1947 and practiced law, first in the Northern Neck and later in Newport News, until 1958. In 1958 he was elected to represent the First Congressional District of Virginia in the United States Congress. He served in Congress from 1959 until his retirement in 1977. While in Congress he was a member of the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and the Space Science and Applications subcommittee. Following his retirement from Congress, he returned to Newport News where he practiced law, most recently with the law firm of Jones Blechman Woltz and Kelly, PC, until his death. He was married to Virginia Martin Downing from 1947 until her death in 1995. He was married to Betty Cutler Downing from 1997 until her death earlier this year. His children, Susan Downing of Hampton, Va. and Dickerson Downing of Stamford, Conn., survive him. Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News is in charge of arrangements.

FERGUSON
Roy "Buddy" Ferguson, age 58, of Richmond, died October 20, 2001, in his home after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Paula Ferguson of Hopewell; daughter, Debbi Karnes and her finace, Ken Dich of Hopewell; sisters, Patricia Rose of Colonial Heights, Linda Brindak of Dinwiddie; brother, Curtis Kiser of Hopewell; aunt, Mildred Ruffner; uncle, Basil Honaker, both of Rainelle, W.Va.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by close, dear and devoted companion, Kathy Liberman; her son, "DJ"; and many close friends. He was a long time employee of Frazier Construction. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2001, in the Enon Church of God, 900 Enon Church Rd., Chester, Va. Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

GORDON
William F. Gordon, age 86, of Spotsylvania, Va., died Wednesday, October 24, 2001. He was a retired mechanic and insurance salesman, a member of Church of the Messiah, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 290, Stafford. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. John Churchill and Cornelia Borst Gordon; and his wife, Louise A. Gordon. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, William Armistead and Brenda Gordon of Spotsylvania; daughter and son-in-law, Marguerite and Thomas Dierauf of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Cynthia G. Terrazas of Stafford, William P. Gordon of Fredericksburg, Thomas A. Dierauf of Callaway, Roland F. Dieuraf of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; great-grandchild, Joshua Gordon of Fredericksburg. Funeral services 11 a.m. Friday at Aquia Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, Va. Memorials to Spotsylvania Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 101, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553.

GRESSETT
Edward L. Gressett Sr., 87, of Richmond, departed this life to be with his beloved Annie J. Gressett on October 23, 2001. He is survived by his son, E.L. "Rusty" Gressett Jr. and his wife, Jean; daughter, Brenda L. Gressett-Wright and her husband, Dennis; granddaughter, Trista L. Cawthorn; and a host of relatives and friends. He was a World War II Navy veteran and retired from the Federal Reserve Bank. He was a volunteer with Lakeside Little League Baseball for many years. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

HAGEE
Carrie Brightwell Hagee, 96, of Richmond, died Saturday, October 20, 2001. She is survived by her son, Davidson Hagee of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kelly Hagee, Joseph Hagee, Allison Fish and Kristen Trujillo; and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends will gather at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. on Friday, October 26 at 10:15 a.m. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. in Hollywood Cemetery.
