CROWDER
Frances Epes Gravatt Crowder, 90, of Blackstone, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001. During her life she was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, teacher and friend. She was the beloved wife of the late William Herbert Crowder Jr. for 60 years. She is survived by her children, Moncure Gravatt Crowder of Atlanta, Ga., William Herbert Crowder III of Charlottesville, Va., and Byrd Epes Crowder of Nashville, Tenn.; her daughters-in-law, Sandy Shuford Crowder of Atlanta and Susan Hobbs Crowder of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Moncure Gravatt Crowder Jr. of Keystone, Colo., Anne York Crowder of San Francisco, Calif., Caroline Crowder Watson of Atlanta, Jeffrey Doswell Crowder of Lewiston, Maine, and Andrew Epes Crowder of Charlottesville; great-grandchildren are twins, Driver and Sarah Avery Watson of Alanta. Frances Crowder was born March 26, 1911 at "Birdwood" in Blackstone, which she loved as well as Nottoway County and Southside Virginia. She was the daughter of William Moncure Gravatt and Byrdie Epes Gravatt. A beloved brother, William Moncure Gravatt Jr. and wife, Linda of Blackstone and sister, Pinckney G. Sheffield of Midway, Utah, also survive her. Her brother, Hon. John Segar Gravatt and sister, Anne Lilbourne Walden preceded her in death. Mrs. Crowder is also survived by sisters-in-law, Mercedes Mayo Gravatt of Farmville, Rachel Crowder of Blackstone, Dola Crowder Mayo and husband of Richmond, and Nancy Almond Crowder of South Hill; brother-in-law, Joseph Baxter Crowder and wife of Richmond. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews and their children to whom she was devoted. Deborah Wills, Sarah Rhodes and Sarah Epes, who cared for her lovingly for over six years, also survive her. Mrs. Crowder attended Hollins College and William and Mary and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Society. She received B.S. and M.A. degrees from Longwood College. She taught history, economics and world geography at Blackstone High School and Kenston Forest School for over 15 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church and the Blackstone Garden Club. Her interests were varied and many. She was an avid gardener and environmentalist. She loved to read and sew and was a knowledgeable collector of antiques. She loved and enjoyed her family, friends and students and took an active interest in their lives until the day she died. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 6, in Lakeview Cemetery by Episcopal priests, Jacqueline Segar Gravatt, her niece, and Franklin Gose, rector of St. Lukes Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at the residence, 503 7th St. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 5. Valentina L. Daner died on June 30, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William E. Daner; her daughter, Sandra E. Daner; and her grandson, Steve. She is survived by two daughters, Ricki D. Forbes and Lisa A. Daner; two sons, William E. Daner Jr. and Gary V. Daner; and eight grandchildren. She was an Army nurse during World War II and met and married the love of her life when both were stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia. If desired, donations may be sent to the William E. and Valentina L. Jean Grubbs Drake, of Highland Springs, daughter of the late Chastine H. and Nell Grubbs passed away Monday, July 2, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Edward B. Drake; two sons, Edward W. Drake and his wife, Jennifer and Michael B. Drake; two grandsons, Matthew G. Drake and Nicholas E. Drake; one brother, Ronald E. Grubbs and his wife, Beverly. Annette S. Edmonson, 82, of Richmond, widow of Hayes Edmonson, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001. She is survived by three children, Charles Edmonson and his wife Susan of Hampton, George Edmonson and his wife Carolyn of Kensington, Md., and Lynda Rountree and her husband Tom of Chesapeake; sister, Florence Williams; three brothers, Louis, Henry and Seymour Shumaker; and six grandchildren. Phillip F. Elliott Sr., 38, of Millers Tavern, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001. Survived by his daughter, Samantha Jean Elliott of Mathews; his son, Phillip F. Richard Timothy (Tim) Frazier, 53, of Kenbridge, Va., died July 3, 2001. Tim was an insurance agent with Modern Woodman of America for 14 years and was a life long member of the Kenbridge Baptist Church. He was an avid lover of older cars, lighthouses, camping, and he enjoyed fun. He was son of the late Richard Banks Frazier. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joyce Daniel Frazier; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Kathy Frazier of Midlothian, and Eddie and Diane Frazier of Brodnax; his mother, Catherine Gills Frazier of Kenbridge, who now resides at Heritage Hall in Amelia; and his sister, Judith Frazier of Kenbridge; and his mother-in-law, Mildred Daniel of Victoria. Merlin Winslow "J.W." Haydon Jr., age 64 of Kilmarnock, Va., died Tuesday, July 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marie Akers Haydon; three sons, Dennis Haydon, Ducon, La.; Jay Haydon, Akron, Ohio and Larry Haydon, Kilmarnock, Va.; two grandchildren; and a sister, Eva Marie Hancock, Linden, Tenn. Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Stanley L. Jeffress, age 77, of Colonial Heights, Va. and formerly of Charlotte Court House, Va., died July 3, 2001. He retired from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, where he served as Business and Industry Specialist (Commercial Loan Officer and Realty Loan Specialist). He also served as Deputy Director of the Virginia State Office of Minority Business Enterprise (OMBE) from 1972 until 1978. Prior to 1972, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Secretary-Treasurer of the Moses Life Insurance Association and as licensed administrator of the Moses Nursing Home in Charlotte Court House. A World War II and Korean War Army veteran, he also served as Extension Agent in Buckingham County and as instructor in the Prince Edward County School System. He was also Past Master of the Charlotte Lodge #146 Free & Accepted Masons, a noble in Mocha Temple #7, and member of VFW #2584. He was a member of Gillfield Baptist Church in Petersburg. Survivors include his daughter, Melba Diane Pulliam of Richmond; son, Stanley L. Jeffress Jr. and wife, Wanda of South Boston; very devoted friend, Ruth Moneyhun of Colonial Heights; two grandchildren, Curtis E. Pulliam Jr. and wife, Tonyea of Richmond, and Zena Allison Jeffress of South Boston. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at Beautiful Plain Baptist Church in Charlotte Court House. Thomas Walter King Jr., 81, of Goochland, formerly of Culpeper, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Mae King, who died April 27, 2001. MARSH
Davis E. Marsh, 80, following his beloved wife Irene, passed away July 1, 2001. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Davis and Sharon Marsh; his daughter, Becky Vaden; six grandchildren, Shannon, Davis Tyler and Caitlin Marsh and Cheryl, Valerie and Matthew Vaden; one sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Fred Walls of Orlando, Fla.; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wallace and Ercell Stahl of Fayetteville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews and many loving friends. Mr. Marsh had been a 22 year employee of Ukrops. He served his country from 1942 to 1945 as a combat infantryman in WWII serving in England, France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. During that period he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged and came home to Virginia in 1945. Dave lived life to the fullest, working into his 70's, always ready to laugh. He retired to spend time with his favorite things, his wife Irene, his grandchildren and his gardening. MARTZ
Mr. Robert Lewis Martz, age 70, passed away on July 1, 2001 at his home. A well-known plasterer throughout the Richmond area for nearly 43 years, he was born in Augusta County on April 17, 1931, a son of James Arthur and Viola Daggy Martz. He married Shirley Wagner Martz on September 30, 1961. His parents and two sisters, Evelyn Martz Milstead and Frances Martz Street preceded him in death. Survivors include his widow; two sons, Stephen Thomas and his wife, Patricia, and Jeffrey Alan; one grandson, Justin Curtis Martz; two step-grandchildren, Michael and Lee Anne Mareck; one brother, Eugene Martz. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., Glen Allen. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Sr. Rita McCabe, 87, a member of the Little Sisters of the Poor, died July 4, 2001. She is survived by her four nephews, Joseph Kiely of Ashland, Va., Jack Kiely and his wife, Rosalie, Robert Kiely and his wife, Marion, and John McCabe, all of Pennsylvania. Sr. Rita has been serving at St. Joseph's Home for the Aged in Richmond since 1970. Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Helen Nadine Manning Meyer, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 2, 2001. She was born October 20, 1918 in Roanoke, Va. and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Joseph Manning. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joseph F. Meyer; her daughter and son-in-law Karen and John J. Curley III; her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. Jr. and Sandra B. Meyer of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Joseph F. Meyer III, Jennifer M. Curley and John J. Curley IV; step-brother, Lee Manning of Black Forest, CO. She was a life long member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Woman's Club and a member of St. Joseph's Auxiliary. She was a St. Mary's Hospital Volunteer for 28 years. Kenneth Ray Mullins, 72, passed away July 3, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jean Mullins; a son and daughter-in-law, Garyl and Piedad Johnson; a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Tom Sadler; grandsons, Kenneth Johnson, Jason and Chris Sadler; granddaughters, Melissa
Johnson and Kelsey Sadler, all of Richmond. He is also survived by sisters, Doris Kennedy and Betty Francisco, both of Kentucky; a brother, Glen Mullins of South Carolina. A native of Myra, Kentucky, he grew up in Pikeville, Kentucky. He lived in Arlington, Va. for more than 40 years, before retiring to Richmond in 1992.
