THOMPSON
Mary Jane McCaslin Thompson passed away on May 24, 2002. She was the daughter of Mary Nelle Robbins McCaslin and Blackard Hendrix McCaslin. She graduated from The Collegiate Schools and attended Salem College and graduated from East Carolina University. She taught high school for many years in Washington, N.C. where she lived with her family for 30 years. She is survived by her son, Leon Chappel Thompson III of Dallas, Texas; and her mother, Mary Nelle R. McCaslin; her sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Patsy Brooks. She was surrounded by many close friends and a large extended family. Services will be held on Sunday, May 26 at 4 p.m. at the the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home and a private burial will be held on Tuesday.

Allen Wayne Toombs, 59, of Richmond died May 24, 2002. He is survived by his companion, Lolly Keith; his daughter, Sandra D. Freer and her husband, Duane; his son, Troy W. Toombs and his wife, Perri; his grandsons, Austin W. and Matthew P. Freer and Jake B. and Zachary L. Toombs. Visitation will be held Monday, May 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the home of Lolly Keith.
TRAVERS
Vice Admiral (VADM) Edward Patrick Travers, 77, former CEO of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, died of natural causes in Richmond, Va. May 22, 2002. Admiral Travers was a long-time resident of Alexandria, Va. VADM Travers was born and raised in Mounds, Ill. before joining the Navy at the age of 17. During a 41 year military career, VADM Travers was a "mustang," a term often used to describe enlisted men who subsequently become commissioned officers. He participated in the final stages of World War II on board a Pacific Fleet aircraft carrier, and was later assigned to submarine duty. He served on the submarines Razorback, Argonaut and Hawkbill. He commanded the submarine Spikefish based in Key West, Fla. in 1960. After serving as Commander of Submarine Division 82 he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and earned a Masters of Science Degree in Business Administration from George Washington University. He served in several posts involving the Navy's budget and logistics during the Vietname War. In 1980 he became the Vice Chief of Naval Material where he served until his retirement from the Navy in 1983. VADM Travers served for ten years as a member of the Board of Directors of the United Service Automobile Association (USAA), a $65 billion worldwide insurance and financial services organization serving active, reserve, and former military. He served five consecutive terms on the Board, was a member of the Executive Committee, treasurer, and served four years a vice chairman. After retiring from Naval Service, VADM Travers was elected President and CEO of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, a $150 million non-profit organization with a mission to assist Sailors, Marines and their families in need. He created a college scholarship fund for children of active duty Sailors and Marines, providing up to 500 scholarships each year. The program was later named the Vice Admiral Edward P. Travers U.S. Navy Scholarship Fund. VADM Travers' military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two gold stars, the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the Distinguished Public Service Medal, Order of Naval Merit Award (by the Republic of Brazil) and various area and campaign ribbons including decorations by the U.S., Brazil, and Vietnam governments. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Marjorie Bingaman of Ullin, Ill.; sons, Edward Jr., Richmond, Va., Ronald and wife, Ann, Short Pump, Va., and John with spouse, Virginia, Charlotte Hall, Md.; grandchildren, Ryan, Aaron, Bryan, Timothy and Nathan; and great-grandchildren, Mary Ryan, Connor and Tyler. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, James Travers of Springfield, Ill., and Charles Travers of Birmingham, Mich., Mary Ann Travers Squires and Sarah Jane Travers Clarke, both of Olive Branch, Ill. VADM Travers was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the United States Submarine League and of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richmond, Va. Local services are scheduled at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., Richmond, Va. with a viewing on Thursday, May 30 at 11 a.m. followed by Mass. The Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road is serving the family. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. WEISENBERGER
Gertrude A. Weisenberger, 80, of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of Richmond, Va., died Friday in Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. Born in Philadelphia, Pa. November 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Towsend and the late Gertrude (Nee McNally) Anderson. Her husband, George A. Weisenberger, preceded Mrs. Weisenberger in death in 1976. She was a homemaker. From 1967 to 1977, Mrs. Weisenberger and her husband, George, were residents of Richmond, Va., where she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Home Demonstration Assoc. She is survived by her sons, Bob and his wife, Patti Weisenberger of Winterville, N.C., and Scott Weisenberger of North Wales, Pa.; daughter, Kathryn M. Alice Royster Winn, age 91, of Wilsons, died Saturday, May 25, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Winn; and a son, Kenneth G. Winn. She is survived by a son, Herbert Winn and wife, Joyce of Blackstone; and daughter-in-law, Jane Vaughan Winn of Alexandria; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Winn was a retired rural mail carrier, a Sunday school teacher and a member of White Oak United Methodist Church. Mr. Richard Alan Atkinson, 48, passed away Friday, December 22, 2000 at his residence in Chester, Va. He was a native of Salem, Va., but had resided in this area most all of his life. He was the son of Willie Ray Atkinson of Hopewell, Va. and the late, Lorraine Chumbley Atkinson. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Carol Nuchols Atkinson; one son, Alan Ray Atkinson, both of Chester. Madeline C. Ballard of 1900 Lauderdale Dr., widow of Davis F. Ballard, died December 24, 2000. She is survived by three nieces and five nephews. She was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 9808 and a membr of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was also retired from DuPont in 1963. BERRYMAN
Ernest Mooring Berryman, 81, died Sunday, December 24, 2000. He was born on November 26, 1919 at Beechland Cross Roads in Elberon, Va. He lived at Beechland all of his life and after high school joined his father in thier family farm operation. Ernest and his son later formed Beechland Farms, Inc., which now has been joined by two of Ernest's gransons. During his farming career, Mr. Berryman was honored twice with an outstanding farmer award and also received honors for conservation work on his farm. He was a member of the County Committee of the Surry ASCS for 12 years. Mr. Berryman worked with the 4-H and FFA organizations, as well as the Surry County Extension Office in developing programs to help youths in furthering their goal to have a career in production agriculture. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, where he served as superintendent for 40 years. Mr. Berryman was preceded in death by his parents William Thomas and Lucy Mooring Berryman; and three brothers, Perry L., Jack C., and Ollie T. Berryman. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evelyn
Jones Berryman; a daughter, Darlene B. Richards of Surry; a son, E. Mac Berryman and his wife, Joanie of Elberon; one sister, Lilly B. Thomas of Ivor; six grandchildren, Bobby Richards and his wife, Stacey of Elberon, Sherri R. Walter Abbitt Bourne, 84, of Rockville, Va., departed this life on Sunday, December 24, 2000. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly Kitchen and his grandson, W. Alexander Kitchen II. Mrs. Elsie Harrison Crafton, 90, widow of Haynie W. Crafton Sr. of Petersburg, Va., died on Thursday, December 21, 2000. Mrs. Gertrude Day Darden, 93, formerly of Emporia, widow of Watkins R. Darden, died Sunday, December 24, 2000 in Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount, N.C. She was the daughter of Charlie William and Bessie Marshall Day, and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where during her active years she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Hicksford Chapter. She is survived by a daughter, Delight D. Andrews and husband, Glen of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and a son, Russell E. Darden and wife, Frances of Courtland, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Katherine R. Garrett, 88, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord December 23, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin L. Garrett; and her daughter, Margaret K. Scruggs, and is survived by her daughters, Pauline Painter, Gladys McMillian, Betty Wade and Ann Hall; her sons, Lewis Scruggs of Reedville, Va., Melvin Scruggs of New Town, Va., and John D. Scruggs of Richmond; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Garrett retired from Friedman Marks Co. after 42 years of service and volunteered at Henrico Doctor's Hospital.
