George Conduff Mathews of Cumberland County, age 85, died October 5, 2000. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Allie B. Mathews; daughter and husband, Mrs. Phyllis M. and Gary C. Groneweg of Farmville; granddaughter, Elizabeth Groneweg of Blacksburg; two brothers, Ray Mathews of Richmond and Richard Mathews of Powhatan. Grace (Gracie) Reynolds McCoy, 70, of Richmond, departed this life on October 2, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Veronica Chrisp, Cecilia Hunter, Juanita Stith and Gloria McCoy; her son, David McCoy; 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Departed this life on October 3, 2000, Wythe (Pudding) Mealy Sr. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary M. Mealy; four children, Mary E., T. George "Ned" Meanley, 69, of Richmond, died October 4, 2000 at Stratford Hall Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Hilda Meanley. He was a US Army veteran. He is survived by his cousin, Judy Mason; and many other family members. Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
MILLS
Adelaide Elliot Mills of Gloucester, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., departed this life on October 3, 2000. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Malachi M. Mills of Gloucester; a daughter, Kathleen M. Lee and her husband, Robert; a son, Malachi M. Mills III and his wife, Kathleen; and two granddaughters, Amanda Marie Lee and Jessica Marie Lee, all of Richmond. Mrs. Mills was born in New Orleans, La. and served as maid on the Royal Court of Hermes at Mardi Gras in 1949. The family will receive friends at Bliley Funeral Home’s Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. in Richmond from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 6. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Saturday, October 7, 11 a.m. at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. Interment immediately following at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Richmond. Mary E. Parsons of Richmond died Wednesday, October 4, 2000. She is survived by a sister, Jean Parsons of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Frances Parsons of Blacksburg, Va.; nephew, Mitchell Parsons; nieces, Linda Parsons, Ann Parsons, Carol Parsons, Kay Reasor and husband, Joe; also grandnephew, Matthew Parsons; and grandnieces, Virginia and Emily Reasor; also numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, George and Sallie Parsons; and brother, Bernard L. Parsons. Mary was a 1974 graduate of VCU and was a retired director with the Dept. of Social Services with the State of Virginia and a member of the Southside Garden Club. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday (today) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.. A Requiem Mass will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Richmond, Va.. Interment 1 p.m. at Oakview Cemetery, Cullen, Va.
PHIFER
Paul Burnette Phifer Jr. (Bunny), age 67, of Glen Allen, died October 4, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Janet Ford Phifer; his children, Barbara P. Jenkins, Paul Burnette Phifer III and his wife, Alison W. Phifer; his grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Jenkins, Shawn Burnette Phifer, Thomas Graham Jenkins Jr., and Whitney Alison Phifer. At a young age, Mr. Phifer joined the American Legion where over the years he served as post commander, state department commander and national vice commander. Upon his death he was a member of the American Legion Post #38, a Mason Glen Allen Lodge #131 and a longtime member of Lakeside United Methodist Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd, where the family will receive friends Thursday and Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday by the American Legion, and where funeral services will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. SHROCK
Mr. Charles Edgar Shrock (Pete), 80, born June 22, 1920 in Pueblo, Colorado, joined his Heavenly Father on October 5, 2000. On October 14, 1939 Pete met his beautiful bride, LaNette Anna Lawrence. Pete was a U.S. Army veteran. He served with the 1341st Combat Engineers in the South Pacific during WWII. He also served as a machinist/welder for the Santa Fe Railroad for 13 years. He retired in 1977 after 22 years as a vocational instructor for the Federal Prison Service. He then devoted his time and love to the "Bus Ministry" at Cameron Avenue Church of Christ in Colonial Heights, where he was an active member and deacon until he was overcome by Alzheimer’s. On the morning of October 5, his God gently took him home. He is survived with loving memories by his wife of 61 years, LaNette; five children, Lillian McCulley, Ruth Paulson, Patricia Batoon, Charles F. Shrock, and Evelyn Burke; three sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, 15 grandchildren, one of which predeceased him, nine great-grandchildren, and one living sibling. A memorial service will be Monday, October 9, 2000, 7 p.m. at the Church of Christ, 601 Cameron Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations or contributions in memory of Pete Shrock can be made to the Church of Christ Youth Fund for purchase of equipment.
SLATER
Mrs. Katharine Gochnauer Slater, affectionately known as "Kitty," died at her home early Wednesday morning, October 4, 2000, after a period of declining health. Born in Winchester, Virginia, on December 4, 1912, Kitty Slater was the daughter of a prominent doctor, the late Dr. Fred Gochnauer and his wife, Pearl Rose Gochnauer of Upperville, Virginia. She attended Stuart Hall preparatory school and Sweet Briar College. She was married to the late George Robert Slater, and resided at West View until her death. Kitty Slater led an ambitious career as a journalist and author. She was a former weekly columnist for The Washington Post sports page and a contributing editor of Spur Magazine. As a freelance writer, Kitty Slater had been published in The Thoroughbred Record and numerous other magazines and newspapers. She was a member of the Author's Guild and the Author's League and is listed in Who's Who of American Women. She is best known for her book The Hunt Country of America published first in 1967, now in its revised Fifth Edition. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Slater Coyner; and her son, George Nicholas Slater; as well as her four grandchildren, Margaret Nicholas White, Christian Bedford Coyner, George Fletcher Slater and Catharine Thornton Slater. Services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia, on Friday, October 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. with interment at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Upperville Virginia. Expressions of sympathy and memorial donations may be made in loving memory of Katharine G. Slater to the Upperville Volunteer Fire Department, the Middleburg Rescue Squad and the Marshall Rescue Squad.

Doris Clark Armstrong, 82, of Disputanta, died at the home of a daughter in Charlottesville, Va. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. E. Olen Culler, 58, of Richmond, died Monday, April 2, 2001. He was a partner in the law firm of Gayle Boyles & Culler. Mr. Culler was a member of the Virginia Bar Association, the Richmond Bar Association and the Henrico Bar Association. He was a member of Jefferson Lakeside Country Club. Mr. Culler was a graduate of the University of Richmond and the T.C.
Williams School of Law. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Perry Culler; two stepsons, William C. and Dr. E. Brooke Roberts; and stepdaughter, Perry Anne LeGaux; five grandchildren; his father, J. Ned Culler; his sister, Barbara C. Boyd; his brother, David A. Culler; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie C. Culler. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street Rd., where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4.
