DAHLEN
Mr. Paul Dahlen, 86, of Fredericksburg died on Friday, March 1, 2002 at Mary Washington Hospital. An Army veteran of WWII, he worked with Dupont for 41 years. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Hilda Goode Dahlen; two daughters, Nancy Smith of Reston, Paula and son-in-law, Ken Hatton of Kalamazoo, Mich.; four grandchildren, Beth and Ted Hatton of Kalamazoo, Adam Smith of Brookline, Mass., Patrick Smith of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a sister, Ina Dahlen of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. A funeral service will be held at Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 2 p.m., Revs. Mike Motsko and Alan Hager officiating. Charitable contributions can be made to the Salvation Army. Found and Sons Funeral Chapels - Cremation Service of Fredericksburg is handling these arrangements.

DEITZ
William Frederick Deitz Jr., 79, of Heathsville, died March 3, 2002. He was a member of Wicomico Episcopal Church, Lancaster Union Lodge #88, AF&AM, Richmond Scottish Rite and Acca Temple. Surviving are his wife, Norma (Mickey) Deitz; sons, Freddie Deitz and David Deitz, both of Wicomico Church; daughter, Anne Lee Vassar of Mechanicsville; mother, Ann B. Deitz of Wicomico Church; four stepchildren, 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Funeral services 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wicomico Episcopal Church, Wicomico Church. Interment Wicomico United Methodist Cemetery, Wicomico Church. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Rainswood. Memorials to Mid-County Rescue Squad, Heathsville, Va.

DENTON
Lucenia B. Denton, 91, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on March 1, 2002. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Stanley A. Dorsey and Haywood O. Denton; and her son, Bill Dorsey. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Anna Dorsey; grandchildren, Vickie Brunk, Debbie Robold, Stan Dorsey, and Chris Dorsey; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). ENGLISH
Mrs. Betty B. English, age 78, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at The Hermitage in Richmond. Mrs. English was born on October 19, 1923, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of the late Percy H. and Hazel H. Bayly. She was the loving wife of the late Mr. Edward J. English for 47 years. Mrs. English was a graduate of Stephen's College in Missouri, married in Hilo, Hawaii and she and her husband later returned to Richmond to live. She was a former school teacher and business manager of the Westwood Club. She was an active volunteer in all of her children's activities and also volunteered at The Science Museum of Virginia. Survivors include her three children, Betty S. English of Richmond, Kathryn English Roberts of Charlotte, N.C., and Marguerite (Riti) English Caton and her husband, David O. Caton Jr. of Hellertown, Pa.; her grandchildren, Kristin L. Roberts and Brian A. Roberts, both of Charlotte, David O. Caton Jr. and Sarah E. Caton, both of Hellertown, Pa.; and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Capt. Donald Bayly, USN (Retired) of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Judy Bayly of Turlock, Calif. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday evenings at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made in remembrance of Mrs. Betty B. English to Hope Church, 1791 Cambridge Dr., Richmond, Va. 23233 or to The Hermitage, 1600 Westwood Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227. The family wishes to thank the loving staff of The Hermitage for their kindness and the love shown to Mrs. English and her family during her residence there.

FISHER
Ruth Phelps Fisher, age 84, of Madison Heights, Va., died Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by her children, Sue Wakefield Fisher Wiley of Crewe, Stewart Harrison Fisher Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., Janet Fisher of Salvador, Brazil. Grandchildren, Dawn Renee Wiley Amos of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Lance Lockhart Wiley of Crewe, Rachel Fisher Gaetan of Bury St., Edmonds, England; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Victoria Amos and Stuart James Andren Amos, both of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Alyssah and Alannah Gaetan of Bury St., Edmonds, England. Mrs. Fisher graduated as valedictorian from Madison Heights High School. She was one of the four top graduates of Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood). She was one of the first women to receive a ministerial degree from Crozier Theological Seminary, Chester, Pa. She taught Latin and later served as a chaplain in Henderson, Texas. The family will receive friends at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, Monday 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wards Chapel United Methodist Church, Crewe, with burial to follow in Fort Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg at 2:30 p.m.

GAINOUS
Silas Anthony Gainous, age 77, born June 15, 1924, known to friends and family as "Tony" went to be with his Lord and Savior March 2, 2002. Originally from Cairo, Georgia, Tony served in the Navy during WWII in North Africa. While stationed in Portsmouth, Va., he met and married his wife, Jean Elizabeth Childress, of Richmond, Va., whom he leaves behind after 57 years of marriage. He is also survived by four children and their spouses, Douglas Anthony and Donna Dixon Gainous, Jerry Lee and Susan Oxford Gainous, Crystal Gainous Lewis and Randall Lewis, and Carol Faye Gainous, all of Richmond, Va. He was also blessed with and leaves behind ten grandchildren listed in the order of their arrival: Angela Gainous Viar of Centreville, Va., Brian Lewis of Wilmington, N.C., Jessica Gainous Philips, Kristin Gainous, Adrian Lewis, Christina Blair Gainous, Taylor Gainous, Brittany Morgan Lewis, Jamie Ann (Annie) Lewis, and Carson Lewis, all of Richmond, Va. In addition, he leaves behind three brothers, James Gainous of Lakeland, Fla., Quinton Gainous of Dothan, Ala. and Douglas Gainous of Tullakoma, Tenn. He supported his family in the private sector as a master auto body repairman and later taught others his trade at Virginia Randolph Community High School in the Henrico County Public School system. Tony served as a deacon at the First Church of the Nazarene and later on the Board of Elders at Immanuel Baptist Church. He loved to fish, raise vegetable gardens, and spend time with his family. A memorial service is tentatively planned for Tuesday, March 5, 2 p.m. at Grove Avenue Baptist Church at the intersection of Parham and Ridge Roads, in Henrico County. The family invites friends to a reception in the fellowship hall directly following the service. Please see Tuesday's paper for confirmation.

GANTLEY
Departed this life March 3, 2002, Mrs. Darlene H. Gantley of 503 N. Foxhill Road. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St. Funeral notice later.

GARLAND
Carolyn Paxton Garland, 57, of Richmond, passed away March 3, 2002. She was the widow of Edward Garland, and was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Thomas and her husband, Mark and Carrie Keller and her husband, Todd; one son, Kenneth Robertson Jr.; two sisters, Dorothy Seawell and Betty Fields; her mother-in-law, Jean Garland; seven grandchildren; her faithful friend, Buster; and a host of other devoted family members and friends. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bon Secours Hospice of Richmond.

GRIFFITH
Hattie L. Griffith, 84, of Richmond, widow of Kent Griffith, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Bibb; three grandchildren, Kim Stagg, Charles Bibb Jr., Cindy Farnor; seven grandchildren and a sister Catherine Stanley. Mrs. Griffith was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Goodwill Baptist Church. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Perkins Baptist Church Cemetery, Rt. 606, Goochland, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Goodwill Baptist Church, 8701 Hungary Spring Road, Richmond, Va. 23228.

HERRING
Kenneth W. Herring, 62, of King William, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 2, 2002. He was a long time employee and friend of the Town of West Point, a lifetime member of the King William Vol. Fire and Rescue Squad, and a member of the West Point Masonic Lodge 238 AF&AM. He is survived by his wife, Betty Herring; three sons, Kenneth W. Herring Jr., Timothy A. Herring, Sidney J. Herring and two daughters, Missy Caddell and Michelle L. Banton, their spouses; two brothers, William L. Herring and James P. Herring; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Vincent Funeral Home, West Point, Va. There will be a Masonic service 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and the family will receive friends until 9 p.m. Memorials can be made to your local fire department and rescue squad.

Mr. Sam E. Hines Sr., retired Philip Morris employee, departed this life on March 3, 2002. The staff of W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home is serving his family.

Harvey M. "Pete" Jones Jr., 72, departed this life on Friday, March 1, 2002 to be with his daughter, Anne Jones, after a lengthy illness at Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was predeceased by his father, Harvey M. Jones Sr.; and daughter, Anne Jones. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Jean Jones; son, Bill Jones and his wife, Sibyll Jones of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren, Taylor, Larkyn, Madelyn Anne, and Amber; his mother, Dorothy Mears Jones; and brother, Ralph Jones of Richmond. Friends may join family for a memorial service Monday, March 4, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. KRETZ
Westley Charles Kretz Jr., 71, of Mechanicsville, passed away March 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son, David Kretz and his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Pam Andrzejewski and her husband, Ken and Elsa Johnson and her husband, Matt; seven grandchildren, Katherine, Daniel, Joey, Hannah, Rachel, Jack and Sam. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002. Interment Hanover Memorial Park.

Joseph Eugene Knight departed this life February 28, 2002 after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife and companion of 49 years, Margie M. Knight; three loving daughters and their husbands, Regina and Howard Shaw, Sandra and Langston Clay Jr. and Alma and Lamarr Smith; one stepson and his wife, Floyd and Ernestine White Sr.; two devoted granddaughters, Sherron N. Shaw and Lauren N. Smith; four stepgrandchildren, Tanisha, Floyd Jr. and devoted, Melinda Y. and Vidrell L. White; three loving sisters, Shirley Young, Pearlie M. Burton and Mable Fields; three brothers, John Bullock, Leroy and Robert Knight; three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; a host of other relatives and friends, among them, three devoted friends, Russell Brown Jr., John Campbell and Edward (Ace) Smith. Dennis Scot Mold, 50, of Midlothian, Va., died suddenly Thursday, February 28, 2002. A memorial service will be held Monday (today) at 7 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd.

MUELLER
Opal Veith Mueller, 95, of Richmond, died Thursday, February 14, 2002. Survivors include her husband, Claire; her son, John and his wife, Peg; and her sister, Nela Miller; as well as other devoted relatives and friends. A memorial service to celebrate her life and give thanks to God will be held Thursday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Epiphany Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice of Richmond.
