Gary L. Cross of La Crosse died March 17, 2002. Survived by his wife, Virginia T. DOYLE
Robert Edward Doyle, 84, of Falls Church, Va., passed away March 16, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmela Agnes Doyle. He will be deeply missed by his loving children, Patricia Doyle Cooper, James Patrick Doyle and Robert Francis Doyle and his wife, Linda Friemark; grandchildren, Leah and Gary Cooper and Jennifer, Michelle and Brian Doyle. Mr. Doyle had been a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna, Va. since its founding, and was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife had been active members at the Lewinsville Senior Center for many years. He won many gold medals from the Fairfax County Senior Olympics in canasta. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps. He retired from the Federal Government after many years of distinguished service. Friends may call Wednesday, March 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Murphy's Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St., Falls Church, Va. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Vienna, Va. Maybelle Copeland Frederick, 90, of Richmond, Va., died March 17, 2002. Born September 12, 1911 in River Falls, Ala. to John and Sara Copeland, she was the youngest of four children. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Nina and Vernon Mathews of Lake Gaston, N.C. and Mildred and Percy Tuck of Richmond; seven grandchildren, James Goodman and his wife, Linda, Sarah Tennefoss, Annette Goodman, Debra Castlebury and her husband, Gerald, Michael Tuck, Vernon Mathews II and Mark Mathews; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Autry Howard Hailey Sr. died March 18, 2002 at the age of 82. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Irene; his daughter, Velma Morgan and her husband, Keith; his sons, Autry Jr. and his wife, Nancy, James and his wife, Cindy, Darnell and his wife, Faye and Kennith and his wife, Judy; grandchildren, Bonnie, Karen and Brian Childers, Alan Morgan, Stacey Ford, Autry III, Jessie, Rickey and Matthew Hailey, Jeannette Snow, Deborah Simon, Megan and Jason Lassiter and Doug Andrews Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star during the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, where he was a member of the 99th Infantry Antitank-Division 394th. He also retired as Master Sergeant from the Air National Guard. He was a member of the Mechanicsville VFW Post 9808, and a member of Ft. Lee Baptist Church. McCONNAUGHEY
On March 18, 2002 William Cary McConnaughey, 87, of “Haw Branch” in Amelia County, Virginia died at his home. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gibson Jefferson McConnaughey; two daughters, Mason McConnaughey Purcell of Charlottesville, Virginia and Sally McConnaughey Cardona of Amelia, Virginia; two sons, Jefferson Cary McConnaughey of Marietta, Georgia and Joseph Westfield McConnaughey of Kennesaw, Georgia; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Barksdale McConnaughey of Marietta, Georgia. He attended the University of Richmond and did graduate study at the University of Virginia. He taught for eight years and was an elementary school principal before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he was employed for a time with the Virginia Department of Education. For five decades, he operated the McConnaughey Insurance Agency in Amelia, Virginia. He was a member of the Amelia Historical Society and Co-Editor of the Society's bicentennial volume, “Historical Notes on Amelia County.” After cremation, the memorial service will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Central Virginia at Farmville are suggested.

Wayland Leslie McHaney, 77, of Richmond, died Sunday, March 17, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Audrey Voelker McHaney; his three children, Leslie McHaney Demo and her husband, David of Greensboro, N.C., Kevin Michael Christopher McHaney and his wife, Cynthia Graham of Madison, Va. and Lisa McHaney Corbett and her husband, William, of Currituck, N.C.; four grandchildren, Michael McHaney Demo, Brian Hanlon Demo, Christopher Gilbert McHaney and Kara Morgan McHaney.
