Mrs. Vivian Doris Lafoon
Johnson Jones, age 83, widow of M.S. (Pete) Johnson, and Ernest Jones, died July 7, 2001 at Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville, Va. A native of Brunswick Co., she is survived by her son, Miles Stuart
Johnson Jr.; a sister, Edna L. Abernathy; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Prince; a stepson, C. Eddie Jones; numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves many friends from her church and community, as well as the children she taught and loved in Brunswick, Lunenburg, Dinwiddie and Henrico Counties. Funeral services will be held at
Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Va., at 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, with interment at the Bethel Cemetery in Alberta, Va. Visitation will be at
Williams Funeral Home on Sunday, July 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church in Rawlings, Va.
KNOTT
Mildred Louise (Linkous) Knott died July 3, 2001 at the home of her daughter, Theresa M. Knott, in Mechanicsville. The daughter of the late Frank Anderson and Mary Ann (Willis) Linkous, she was born September 3, 1920 in Wise County, Virginia, the tenth of eleven children. Retired from Raytheon, she spent most of her life in Abingdon but moved to the Richmond area about ten years ago to be near her children. The widow of Robert Lee Knott Jr., she is survived by two other children, Barbara Hoban Banyasz and husband, Joseph of Bon Air, and R. L. Knott III and partner, Pattie Arwood of Prince George County; four grandchildren, Robert Lynn Knott and wife, Teresa of Prince George, Sean M. Hoban and Sharon M. Hoban of Bon Air, and Daniel A. Knott of Mechanicsville; and two great-grandchildren, Robert Hunter Knott and Hannah Elizabeth Knott of Prince George. She is also survived by a sister, Ada Evelyn (Linkous) McAvoy of Mechanicsville; and a brother, John Delmar Linkous of Jamestown, Kentucky. Survivors include numerous relatives in Southwest Virginia and devoted nephews, Dr. A.R. (Xan) Smythe of Columbia, S.C. and T. Craig Fox of Nashville, Tennessee. A memorial service will be held on July 27, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Redeemer in Mechanicsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mildred Knott's memory to the Youth Ministry of the Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, Virginia 23111 or to the human services charity of choice. Her cremains will be taken to the Virginia coast and to Abingdon at a future date.
LaGOW
Louise Childrey LaGow, passed away July 7, 2001 at age 82, after a long illness. She was the widow of Homer V. LaGow, and a resident at The Hermitage Nursing Home at the time of her death. Mrs. LaGow retired from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Division of Legislative Services in 1984. She was honored by the members of the Virginia General Assembly upon her retirement for her 25 years of faithful and cheerful service. She received an award as the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year at The Virginia Home in 1990, and will long be remembered for her kindness and caregiving to the residents and to her family. She is survived by her two children, J. Christopher LaGow, a local attorney, and Anne DeGraffenreid LaGow, a psychiatric social worker with the Medical College of Virginia; by her loving and devoted sister, Caroline C. Crenshaw of Richmond; and two brothers, Frank W. Childrey of Richmond, and John S. Childrey of Mineral, Va.; and three grandchildren, Michelle A. Morouse of Kauii, Hawaii, Elizabeth Childrey LaGow and Caroline Christopher LaGow, both of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., Monday, July 9, 2001 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 520 N. Boulevard, Richmond, Va., the Rev. Charles Buck Aiken presiding. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Greater Richmond Alzheimer's Association or to The Virginia Home.

Sylvester Maddox of Henrico County drifted peacefully away Wednesday, July 4, 2001. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Jean Maddox; three stepchildren; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Dean, Fannie Sue Moon and Ida Mae Sullavan; six sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, a host of other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Sunday, 5 to 6 p.m. Remains will lie in state Monday, 11 a.m. at Mt. Ellen Davis Martin, 89, of Midlothian, went to be with the Lord July 7, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cole Martin. She is survived by her children, Alice M. Rudolph, Peggy M. Livesay and her husband, Leon, and James P. Martin and his wife, Barbara; a brother, Benjamin C. Davis and his wife, Grace; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Interment services will be private. Maura C. Marziale, 72, of Richmond, formerly of Hillsdale, N.J. passed away Friday, July 6, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Peter A. Marziale; two daughters, Jean Gunset and husband, Glenn, Barbara Marziale and her close friend, Joseph Bridgers; one son, Peter John Marziale; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Lembo and husband, Paul; other loving family and friends. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 8 and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Robert L. "Bobby" Mays, passed away on July 6, 2001 after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. Bobby was born on February 18, 1949 in Richmond, Va. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Lorraine. His two dutiful sons, Robbie and Christopher and their spouses, Libby and Whitney; his adoring daughter, Pamela and her new spouse, John Michael; two grandchildren, William "Billy" and Matthew, sons of Christopher and Whitney; and his mother, Lillie. Bobby was preceded in death by his father, Eugene "Red" Mays; and brother, William "Billy" Mays. Bob Mays was a career pilot and accomplished businessman, and a most wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather. A special thank you to Custer Road United Methodist Church Friendship Class, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, for the care, compassion and time they gave Bobby. Thank you to St. Paul's Hospice, special people doing God's work. MILLER
Gretchen Culver Miller, 96, of Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, passed away July 5, 2001. Born March 10, 1905 in Luzerne County, Pa. to David Owen Culver an Strella Brunges Culver, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Fremont Miller; and her daughter, Sarah Lee Miller Savage. She graduated in 1925 from Bloomsburg Normal School (now Bloomsburg University), Bloomsburg, Pa. She taught school in Pennsylvania before raising a family and moving to Richmond. In 1952 she resumed her teaching career at Battlefield Park Elementary School in Hanover County. She transferred to Henrico County and taught sixth grade at Crestview Elementary, and for many years, until her retirement, at Jackson-Davis. She was elected and served as President of the Henrico County Education Association from 1958 to 1960. Following her retirement in 1971, she remained active and enjoyed traveling in Europe and the Orient. She spent many years as a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital and later enjoyed helping out in the child care center at Westminster-Canterbury. She was a devoted member of Three Chopt Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two sons, Clinton Fremont Miller Jr. of Richmond and Stephen Howard Miller of Mila; and by two daughters, Barbara Miller Sirles and Susan Miller Mountcastle of Richmond; 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive visitors on Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Three Chopt Presbyterian Church, 9315 Three Chopt Road on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with burial following at Westhampton Memorial Park. Melvin Tyree Patrick, age 71 of Williamsburg died Friday, July 6, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rackley Patrick; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara "Bobe" Jane and Jim W. Witzigman of Statesville, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Charles Henry and Theresa Lynn Patrick of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; four sisters, Elizabeth McLeod of Doswell, Eloise Rash of Richmond, Helen Doss of Mechanicsville, Dorothy Moyers of Chesterfield; one brother, Gordon Patrick of Virginia Beach. Preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice "Buddy" and Dwight Patrick. Mr. Patrick was past president and chairman of the board of the Protected Life Insurance Co. and founder of Patrick's Co., Inc. Frances Gillum Payne, 82, of 300 Lynn Lane, Waynesboro, Va., died Thursday night, July 5, 2001, at Augusta Medical Center. Survivors include a son, John Gordon Payne IV and his wife, Sue; two grandchildren, Michelle Lauren Payne and Kristen Nicole Payne, all of Midlothian. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro.

James D. Phillips, 74, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., passed away July 7, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gladys M. Phillips; two sons, Mike (Paula) and Tim (Kathryn) Phillips; four grandchildren, James, Daniel, Michael and Michelle. Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and retired in 1989 after 38 years with Dominion Virginia Power. Funeral services pending with Teague Funeral Home, Charlottesville, Va.

Jack Wayne Plott, 66, of Chesterfield, Va., retired from A&E Supply Co., passed away July 5, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Carolyn A. Plott; daughter, Katherine Plott of Chesterfield; son, LCpl. Sam Plott of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; one brother, Bobby Lee Plott of Warm Springs, Va.; aunt, Tunney Padgett of Lexington, Va.; and other loving family and friends. Mr. Plott was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sam and Josephine Plott and Betty Jo Hopper. Dr. Charles Russell Riley, 83, of Richmond, died July 7, 2001 at home. He was a longtime member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church. He served in WW II as a Battalion Surgeon, and then returned to serve this community in many capacities, including 1st Chief of Surgery at St. Mary's Hospital and later as Chief of Staff, staff member of Retreat and Richmond Memorial Hospitals; Assoc. Professor of Anatomy at MCV and assisted with resident training. As a graduate of Notre Dame University, he was a founding member of the local Notre Dame Club. He also served on the boards of St. Gertrudes High School and Benedictine High School. He retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Eunice S. Riley; his 11 children, Susan, Sarah, Charlie, Henry, Ellen, Nora, John, Emily, William, Kelly and Mary; 15 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia R. McGann of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Rebecca R. Gorman of Franktown, Va. Remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a Rosary to be said at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Mrs. Alice Baugh Gwaltney "Granny" Sober, 96, died peacefully Saturday, July 7, 2001 at her home in Parham Park Place Apartments, Richmond. She was the widow of Loyde O. Gwaltney and Clarence O. Sober. She is survived by a devoted daughter, Lucille Gwaltney Lescanec Fout of Richmond; five grandchildren, Loyde O. Gwaltney III, Samuel A. Gwaltney, K-Frances G.
