Smith Harcum, 95, of Lancaster, widow of Hubbard S. Harcum, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001. She is survived by five children, Marbary Harcum, Patsy Bryan and Verna Ann Saunders, all of Lancaster, Jackie Harcum of Hampton and Judy Whatley of Whidbey Island, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, where the family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 13 at 3 p.m. in the Corrottoman Baptist Church. Jesse Lee "Bubba" Hathaway Jr., 56, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 9, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Betty Hathaway; children, Jesse Hathaway III and his wife, Susan, Angela Gray and her husband, Robert, Brian Atkins and his wife, Carol, Shauna Romeo and her husband, Ted, Amanda Alexander, Jesse Hathaway Jr. and his wife, Nicole; his parents, Mary and Jesse Hathaway Sr.; sisters, Mary, Sissie, Debbie and Lisa; a brother, Bobby; grandchildren, Jesse IV, Elizabeth, Andrew, Daniel, Chelsea, Christina, Jessica and Frankie; nieces, nephews, and friends. Henry A. Hawkes, 92, formerly of 5312 Patterson Ave. and native of Blackstone, Va., departed this life October 9, 2001. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Ryland C. Epps Jr. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Blanche P. Hawkes; two nephews, one devoted, Richard C. Peebles Sr. (Esther) and Edward G. Frances Crowder Laird, 79, widow of Douglas W. Laird, died October 10, 2001. She is survived by her son, H. Prince Jr. She is survived by Joyce F. Wittel, C. W. Fogg Jr., Gloria F. Muire, Robbie C. Longest and James L. Longest; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen Reed, Mary Glass; and brother, Samuel Prince. Remains rest at the B. W. MOFFETT
Robert L. Moffett, 84, of Richmond, died October 9, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine
Johnson Moffett; his sons and their wives, Wayne Lee and Sandra Ryan Moffett and David Patrick and Shirley Kisil Moffett; grandchildren, Laura Marie and Daniel Scott Moffett; cousin, Howard Nagengast. Mr. Moffett was a graduate of Benedictine High School and the former Richmond Mechanic's Institute. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the Army Medical Corps, and he participated in the North African and Italian Invasions. Following the war, Mr. Moffett worked as an optician for over 25 years, and he holds a patent for an optical measuring device that has been used nationwide. Mr. Moffett left the optical business in 1971 when he started his own architectural design business and he designed well over 1000 homes in the Richmond area up until his retirement in 1995. Mr. Moffett was a former member of the Richmond Home Builder's Association and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Katherine Davis Morgan, 96, of Richmond, widow of James W. Morgan, died October 8, 2001. She is survived by her granddaughters, Suzanne P. Jefferson and Elaine Patterson Wimer. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Elizabeth Taylor "Betty" Odom, 80, of Irvington, Va., died Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, John Robert Odom Jr.; and by her granddaughter, Meredith Carol Loughran, U.S. Navy. She is survived by her son, retired U.S. Coast Guard Capt. John R. Odom III and his wife, Natalie Gregory Odom; and her daughter, Kern Odom Loughran and her husband, John P. Loughran. She also left three granddaughters, Elizabeth B. Pietras, Chandler O. Lanman and Katherine L. Clagett; a great-grandson, Robert Yates Clagett III; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Somerset Pietras. Mrs. Odom was a resident of Sandston for 46 years, an active member of Sandston Presbyterian Church, worked for McGuire Woods & Battle for over 15 years, and was a U.S. Coast Guard SPAR Officer during World War II. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Meredith Carol Loughran '94 Scholarship Fund at Mary Washington College, P.O. Box 1908, Fredericksburg, Va., 22402-1908. Isham A. Parrish Jr., 76, of Richmond, died October 10, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Parrish; three daughters, Carolyn P. Ingram, Linda P. Blain and Jenny S. Brizendine; one sister, Mae Toothaker of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three nieces and three nephews. Mr. Parrish was a member of the Scottish Rite and the Dale Ruritan Club.
