Herbert J. Burgart, 70, dies
Nov 15, 2002
When Dr. Herbert Joseph Burgart arrived at Richmond Professional Institute in 1966, the art school he was to lead was managed by a council of six department heads.
The art school's founder, Theresa Pollak, wrote in 1969 that before his arrival the school had "lost the last vestige of any sense of unity."
The first to hold the title of dean at the School of Art, Mr. Burgart played a major role in developing the national reputation the school enjoys today.
A memorial Mass for Mr. Burgart, 70, who died Saturday at his home in Brodnax, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at The Good Shepherd Catholic Church in South Hill.
Mr. Burgart accepted the post in anticipation of RPI's pending merger with the Medical College of Virginia that created Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968.
"He was a dynamic dean and inventive in his solutions," said Richard Kevorkian, a VCU professor emeritus and former chairman of the painting and printmaking department. "Herb trusted the people he had and gave them the space to create and teach."
Under his decade of leadership, the RPI School of Art became the VCU School of the Arts, expanding its departments from six to 11, adding more than 100 faculty members and gaining accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art.
The university's music and theater programs became part of the School of the Arts. Individual departments in sculpture and painting/printmaking were established from the former fine arts department. Enrollment jumped from about 500 to nearly 2,000.
Mr. Burgart left VCU in 1976 to become president of Moore College of Art, the nation's only women's college for art and design. Five years later, he accepted the presidency of the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., retiring there in 1985. After several moves up and down the East Coast, he settled in Brodnax about two years ago, his family said.
A former president of the Southeastern College Art Conference, he was also a board member of the National Council of Art Administrators and a former secretary of the National Association of Schools of Art.
The Pennsylvania native came to Richmond from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., where he had been chairman of the department of arts. He had also held posts at the University of Georgia, the University of South Florida, Louisiana State University and the Berkeley School for the Blind in California.
Mr. Burgart earned a bachelor's degree from Long Beach State College and completed his master's and doctoral degrees in art education from Penn State University.
Survivors include three sons, Herbert Andrew Burgart and Nicholas Walter Burgart, both of Brodnax, and Joshua William Burgart, of Port Allegany, Pa.; two daughters, Sarah Marie Dudley, of Chelmsford, Mass., and Maj. Rachel Helena Lefebvre, of Vacaville, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Saint Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Allegany, Pa.
