TAYLOR
Elliott Ray Taylor Sr. died on December 24, 2000, of heart failure. He was born on February 24, 1915, in Ashland, Va., the sixth of seven children of Walter and Stella Taylor, descended from a distinguished Virginia family which includes Presidents Zachary Taylor and James Madison. He rode his horse "Flossie" to grammar school and later compiled an outstanding record as an athlete at Ashland High and Benedictine of Richmond. He lettered in football, where he was captain and quarterback, baseball, captained the basketball team, and anchored the relay team in track. During half times of basketball games, he even put on exhibition boxing bouts. He was one of the state of Virginia's most sought-after recruits in 1934 and accepted a scholarship to Virginia military Institute. While at VMI he was awarded nine varsity letters for football, basketball and baseball. He was also starting halfback for the undefeated freshman team and captain of the freshman basketball team. He was named an All-State and All-Southern end in 1938 and was captain of the 1939 basketball team. He was known for his rugged durability and versatility as an athlete, missing only one game in four years. He was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1984 by a unanimous vote. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry which became the Tank Corps. He participated as a tank commander with the Second Armored Division in the Invasion of North Africa and the Sicily campaign. While in Sicily, he was made an aide to General George Patton. As a result, Captain Taylor was in close contact with him throughout the buildup to the Normandy Invasion while in England, as well as the actual landing in Normandy of the Third Army and the drive through France to the Rhine. Captain Taylor was the first American to enter Paris. At the instructions of General Patton, he rode into Paris with the French Second Armored Division with orders to get some stockings for Patton's wife. He spent two days in Paris and returned with the prize to the General. He was with Patton on the drive north in the snow to relieve the besieged town of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. During the campaign, he won the Bronze Star. Shortly thereafter, while waiting for General Patton at a meeting in Biencourte, Belgium, he was hit by a German shell that killed three of his fellow officers with whom he had just been talking and was knocked out of the war. After the war, Mr. Taylor joined the C&S Bank, rising to vice president. He then started his own wholesale company in Rome, Georgia, and built it into a successful distribution business, which he sold and then retired. He was always known for his keen sense of humor and affability as well as his athletic ability. He was an enthusiastic golfer at the Capital City Club, winning one of the two major club tournaments one year and was a charter member of the legendary "gangsome" golfers there in his later years. He was also a member of the Piedmont Driving Club and was a founding member of the Atlanta Country Club, managing the building of the country club and golf course. Mr. Taylor was also distinguished for his bravery not only in athletics and World War II but particularly during his last years when he faced each of many medical hurdles with admirable courage. General Patton said of the men of his Third Army, "We should not mourn these brave men. Instead, we should thank God that they lived." He is survived by his former wife, Beverly Bailey Taylor; and three children, E. Ray Taylor Jr., May Bailey Taylor Hollis and Richard Coles Taylor, all of Atlanta. Decorated war vet Jan Laverge dies
Jun 13, 2001
It was with modesty and humility that Jan Laverge shook hands with Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands in 1982 during a ceremony in Washington to honor World War II veterans of the Army's Office of Strategic Services.
"I was very pleased, of course, honored and pleased," Mr. Laverge told The Richmond News Leader as he accepted Holland's Resistance Memorial Cross for his part in wartime efforts to free Nazi-occupied Holland.
"But . . . any award is symbolic," he said, "in the sense that for every award given, there are 10 people dead who should have earned it before we did."
Mr. Laverge, a longtime resident of Richmond, died Monday at age 91. A native of the Netherlands, he served as a major in the Army and was leader of "Operation Melanie," the joint American-Dutch effort that eventually led to the country's liberation.
Mr. Laverge was a retired senior vice president of Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. Inc. He continued with the company as director emeritus until his death.
In addition to his 1982 honor from Holland, Mr. Laverge was awarded the Legion of Merit from the U.S. government and the Croix de Guerre from France, and he was made a knight of the Order of Orange Nassau by Holland.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Boelen Laverge of Richmond; two daughters, Eva Laverge de Coligny of Roanoke and Charlotte Laverge West of Alexandria; and a brother, Augustus Laverge of the Netherlands. He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a son, Bart Jan Laverge.
