Robert Layman Anderson died January 12, 2001. He was born June 14, 1930 in Bland, Va. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, then worked as a machinist until he retired. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Mason Anderson; two sons, Robert Anderson of Pennsylvania and Thomas Anderson of Maryland; one daughter, Marie
Williams of Virginia. He was predeceased by one daughter, Lynn Anderson. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Buddy Anderson and Scottie Anderson; two sisters, Betty Hancock and Peggy Seastrum. Lawrence B. Andrews, 89, a lifelong resident of Paynefield, Mt. Landing, and son of the late William Lawrence and Allene Beazley Andrews died Wednesday, January 17, 2001. He was a farmer and cattleman, former deacon and member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, Essex Ruritan Club and the Essex Farm Bureau. Survived by his wife, May Sanford Andrews; sisters, Miriam H. Andrews, Charlotte B. Andrews, Mary Allene Andrews; a brother, Dr. Wayland D. Andrews, all of Richmond; nieces, Frances T. Dillard, Allene T. Carlile; nephews, William R. Turpin, Randolph B. Fitch, John R. Cecchini. Mr. Andrews was predeceased by sisters, Maud A. Charles and Lucille F. Andrews; a brother, John R. Andrews. Mary Field Duane Clark, age 53, of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Richmond, died Thursday, January 18, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Jack P. Clark Jr.; her aunt, Mary Parrish; and her brother, Harley W. Duane III; her sister, Jane Duane Neal; her niece, Townsend E. Duane; two nephews, Christopher E. Duane and A. Blair Neal. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and The Country Club of Virginia. She was employed at Kellum & Eaton Insurance Agency, Virginia Beach, Va. DAMEREL
John Edward Damerel III, 70, of Richmond, passed away January 17, 2001 at Chippenham Hospital. Born in Hackensack, N.J., he was the son of the late John Edward Damerel Jr. and Kathryn
Smith Damerel. He lived in Rutherford, N.J. and Williamsville, N.Y., before moving to Richmond in 1946. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1948 and attended Princeton University from 1948 through 1951 where he was a member of the Elm Club and sang in the Glee Club. He graduated cum laude from American University in Washington, D.C., in 1963 with a B.S. degree, majoring in accounting. He was employed by Virginia Power, in Richmond and Alexandria, from 1954 through 1963. John retired from Coopers and Lybrand, formerly Leach, Calkins and Scott, in Richmond, where he worked as an auditor and later as a tax manager for 27 years. He served on the adjunct faculty of the University of Richmond from 1971 through 1973 and from 1974 through 1990 he taught courses in accounting and taxation at John Tyler Community College. John was also a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. John was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church where he sang in the Sanctuary and the Golden Notes Choirs. He also sang in the Richmond Symphony Chorus for a brief period. His interests were music and jogging. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anna Noel Damerel; two sons, Edward Franklin Damerel of Richmond and Steven Ray Damerel of Concord, Calif.; two sisters, Lois D. Rucker of Dallas, Texas and Emily D. King of Richmond; one brother, Gardner Perry (Tony) Damerel of Hillsville, Va.; three grandchildren, Jordan, Sophie, and Adam Damerel of Concord, Calif. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at Bon Air Baptist Church. Garvin L. DeHart, age 67, of Richmond, died January 14, 2001 at his home. He is survived by one brother, Lawrence W. DeHart of Cambridge, Mass. DENNIS
The Rev. William Rutherford Dennis Jr., 79, of Richmond, died on Wednesday, January 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie I. Dennis; son, William R. Dennis III and his wife, June; daughter, Lindsey E. Dennis; two granddaughters, Beth Bouchard and her husband, Michael and Kris Church and her husband, Mark; three great-grandchildren, Casey, Drew and Mikey Bouchard; and a number of other relatives and friends. Mr. Dennis served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in England, France and Puerto Rico. He worked as an advertising manager in Florida and Alabama, also in Richmond at WRVA Radio and WWBT, Channel 12. He attended Virginia Tech, also the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas from 1960-63 and trained at South Carolina State Hospital in the Hospital Chaplaincy Program. He served churches in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, including King George County, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Petersburg, The Church of the Creator in Mechanicsville and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Richmond. He also founded the Chaplaincy Program at Johnston-Willis Hospital. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 1214 Wilmer Ave., Richmond, Va. Lucille H. Edwards departed this life to eternal rest on January 18, 2001. Mrs. Edwards, age 87, was born in Marshville, N.C. and was a longtime resident of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Ray Edwards and is survived by two sons, Ralph G. Edwards and Robert E. Edwards of Richmond. Mrs. Ewards was a longtime member of Lakeside United Methodist Church and a founding member of the Spade & Trowel Garden Club. Fred A. Giese, 82, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, January 18, 2001. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Fred Wade, and Janet G. Roy Earl Hall Sr., 58, of Powhatan, died Wednesday, January 17, 2001 at his home. He was the husband of Patricia Crutchfield Hall and was retired from S&G Bag Manufacturing in Richmond. Earl was born August 2, 1942 in Raysal, W.Va., to the late Roy Patrick Hall and Elma Viola Dearfield Hall. He attended Old Powhatan Baptist Church, loved his family and enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Roy Earl Hall Jr. and Teresa Massey Hall; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Ann Hall Woodall and Stafford R. Woodall of Forest; his twin sister, Muriel Hall Dingus and her husband, Tommy Samuel Dingus of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Sydney Lynn Hall, William Spencer Woodall and Stafford Tyler Woodall. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dianne Lynn Hall; and a brother, George Clifford Hall. Davis Eugene Hardy, 79, of Richmond, died January 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Edna A. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Ledford. Mr. Hardy was an Army veteran of WWII and received the Purple Heart.
