Carnie R. Burcham, pastor, dies
Sep 06, 2002
Dr. Carnie Roy Burcham Sr. set his sights on the ministry as a young child attending Forest Oak Christian Church in Carroll County.
His wife, Margaret McCluney Burcham, said her husband told the story of announcing his career intentions to his parents at the age of 10.
"But he never changed his mind and made the ministry his life," she said. "He enjoyed helping people in so many different ways. He just loved the entire human race."
Mr. Burcham, a retired Disciples of Christ pastor of two Richmond-area churches, died Wednesday at age 82.
He had lived in Williamsburg since 2001.
Ordained in 1946, the Woodlawn native spent 15 years in Louisiana, where his ministry included assignments with churches in Shreveport, New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
President of the 1953 Louisiana Convention of Christian Churches, he was also a chairman of the board of the Louisiana Christian Missionary Society and a former member of the Governor's Committee of Institutional Chaplains in Louisiana.
Coming to Richmond in 1961, Mr. Burcham accepted a call from Lakeside Christian Church, leading the congregation for seven years before being named associate executive secretary for the Virginia Convention of Christian Churches.
Among his many roles as associate secretary, he oversaw outreach efforts, including the church's migrant ministry on the Eastern Shore, said the Rev. Myron Kauffman Sr., a friend and former executive secretary.
In 1971, he joined Third Christian Church and served as pastor until his 1995 retirement. Third Christian is no longer affiliated with the Disciples of Christ.
Mrs. Burcham described her husband as a lover of history, theater, music and golf, and as a pastor who was keenly interested in ecumenical programs.
He served on a number of regional and church-wide committees for the Disciples of Christ faith and was a former member of the executive committee of the Virginia Council of Churches.
A past president of both the Richmond Area Clergy Association and the Richmond Chaplaincy Service, he gave many years as a chaplain at Richmond International Airport.
Mr. Burcham was a 1944 graduate of Lynchburg College. He earned a master's degree in 1946 and later a doctorate in theology, both from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
Mr. Burcham was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Carnie Roy Burcham Jr., of Shreveport, La., and John Mark Burcham and Sara Jane Burcham, both of New Orleans; a stepson, Richard Lesher McCluney Jr., of Williamsburg; three sisters, Kathleen B. Riddle, of Greensboro, N.C., and Florence B. Lawson and Pearl B. Bartlett, both of Galax; a brother, the Rev. Bobbie B. Burcham, also of Galax; two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Nelsen Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be at Fort Hill Burial Park in Lynchburg at 3 p.m.
William Ramkey, minister, dies at 87
Led Presbyterian churches in valley
Oct 16, 2002
The Rev. William H. Ramkey Jr. had planned to become a counselor when he was instead called to Army service. During World War II, he was called again, this time to the ministry.
"The war and the time he spent in Austria afterward solidified his call," said his daughter Carol Ramkey, of Alexandria.
As a movement and control officer in upper Austria, the then-Capt. Ramkey spent a year aiding those displaced by the war.
"That year made him aware that, in his words, we are all capable of great evil and great goodness," she added.
Mr. Ramkey, a former executive secretary of the Lexington Presbytery, died Monday in Harrisonburg. He was 87.
The Richmond native entered Union Theological Seminary in his 30s and earned bachelor's and master's degrees there.
Among his pastorates were Bridgewater and Dayton Presbyterian churches from 1950 to 1958 and then Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church near Lexington until he was named executive secretary of the Lexington Presbytery in 1961.
He held that job, overseeing 80 churches and 30 chapels, until 1968 and had twice served as the presbytery's moderator.
"He was always eager to serve the needs of people and was an expert at understanding them," said a friend and former colleague, Dr. Albert C. Winn, president emeritus of Louisville Theological Seminary.
Mr. Ramkey was involved in the 1974 merger of the presbyteries of Lexington and Winchester into the Shenandoah Presbytery. He would later serve as moderator for the Shenandoah Presbytery as well.
He excelled in pastoral care in his parishes and in negotiations in his administrative duties, friends and family said.
"Personal ministry was his real gift," said another daughter, Molly Ramkey, a newsroom paginator for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I always said my dad had a special place in his heart for life's refugees."
From 1968 until his 1981 retirement, Mr. Ramkey led the congregation of Charles Town Presbyterian Church in Charles Town, W.Va.
He continued to serve as a supply pastor in the valley into the mid-1990s.
A 1936 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, he also did graduate work at the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and what is now James Madison University.
Mr. Ramkey was the widower of Lois Virginia Sloop Ramkey.
In addition to his two eldest daughters, survivors include another daughter, Kristin Ramkey, of Falls Church; and a sister, Jean Ramkey Dabney, of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. in the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, where he lived since 1992. A second service will follow Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.
