Departed this life August 17, 2001, Mrs. Grace V. Washington of Richmond. She is survived by five daughters, Margaret E. Richardson, Grace V. Peters, Gloria J. Anderson, Brenda M. Gross and Donita R. Washington; three sons, George Jr., Marvin J. and Maurice J. Washington; 19 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Vivian Fuller; several nieces and nephews, among them, Barbara Pitchford and cousins; two daughters-in-law, Madames Lucy and Ella Washington; two sons-in-law, Roosevelt Richardson and beloved, Larry Gross; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave., where the family will receive friends Monday 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m. Rev. Carlisle C. Butler dies at 95

Carlisle C. Butler, a landscape architect and developer who founded Westhampton Memorial Park, died Thursday in Richmond.
Mr. Butler, 95, was the retired president and CEO of Westhampton Memorial and Sunset Memorial parks until the properties were sold in 1993.
He designed cemeteries, golf courses and other public spaces throughout the country, mostly in the Southeast.
Early in his career, Mr. Butler was a partner in the Charles F. Gillette design firm. He also worked for several federal and state agencies, including the Department of the Interior, the state Conservation Commission and the National Park Service, playing a role in the design and development of Skyline Drive and the reconstruction of some Richmond-area battlefields.
In 1954, he founded Westhampton Memorial Park, and along with the cemetery's investors acquired and expanded Sunset Memorial Park in 1962. In addition to his leadership of the two cemetery companies, he continued his design work until about 1990.
The Richmond native attended the former Richmond Professional Institute.
He was a past trustee of Ferrum College, a former president of the Downtown Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
In 1993, he and his wife, Doris Newton Butler, were awarded honorary doctorates from Randolph-Macon College for their longtime support of the institution.
Mrs. Butler died in 2002.
Survivors include a sister, Salome Butler Binnix of Richmond.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Westhampton Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury.

Susan Reveley Arthur, 60, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Arthur Tate; a son, Roy Christopher Simmons; three grandchildren, Hunter White, Elizabeth and Christopher Simmons. Michael Blanton Barr of Chevy Chase, Md. departed this life on Thursday, September 5, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Nickeson Barr; one son, Nicholas; two daughters, Jessica and Alice; his mother, Rosemary Blanton Quatmann; brothers, Harry, John, Kevin, Thomas and Lewis; sisters, Anne, Maureen and Rosemary; also surviving are 28 nieces and nephews. George B. Davis Sr. of Richmond, died Saturday, September 7, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jane Davis; his children, Grace Phyllis Griffin of Lititz, Pa., George B. Davis Jr. of Urbanna; his brother, W.T. Davis of Florida; and his sister, Janice Murray; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Davis was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II on the U.S.S. Boxer, and a member of Chamberlayne Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. DEAVER
Capt. Henry C. Deaver Jr., U.S. Merchant Marine, Ret., died on September 7, 2002 after a long battle with cancer. Capt. Deaver was a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served for 47 years in the Merchant Marines. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War. He served as a ship's master for Amoco Shipping for 27 years. Capt. Deaver was a baptist and a member of St. John's Lodge #36, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies and ACCA Temple Shrine. He was a past patron of Areme Chapter #17, O.E.S., He was also a member of Master Mariners, Marine Squad Club and American Legion Post #91. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Anna Thomas Deaver; one sister, Mary D. Jones; and one brother, James E. Deaver. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Graveside services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Annex Cemetery, Mathews County, Va. Margaret Morton Garnett of Richmond, died Friday, September 6, 2002. A native of Buckingham County, Miss Garnett was born January 28, 1913 to Edwin Crute Garnett and Lucy Davis Garnett. She was a longtime resident of Enfield, N.C., where she was an active member of Enfield United Methodist Church. Miss Garnett was a librarian at Stuart Hall in Staunton, Va., and St. Christopher's School. She is survived by one sister, Harriet Garnett Pais of Richmond. She was the loving aunt of many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday (today) at the Smyrna United Methodist Church at Sheppards in Buckingham County. GIBSON
Ruby Henley Gibson, 95, formerly of Richmond, died Friday, September 6, 2002. She is survived by her son, B.H. Gibson of Ormond Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Alan Craig, Mark David and Philip Michael Gibson; niece, Elizabeth Anne Stevenson of Richmond; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gibson retired as chief operator of information (now known as directory assistance) from C&P Telephone in 1963. Horace Rudolph "Rudy" Grissom, SFC U.S. Army (Retired), 79, born June 5, 1923 in Henderson, N.C., son of Willie and Zelma Knott Grissom, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Williams Grissom; five daughters, Victoria and her husband, Roger Clements, Lila and her husband, Joseph Johndrow, Carolyn Hall and Michael Bryan, Sandra and her husband, William Lilly, Nancy and her husband, SMSgt James Banes; three brothers, Jesse, W.T. and Delano; three sisters, Nettie, Pearl and Lucy; 13 grandchildren, John Poe III, Sherry Koenig, Barbara Silva, Cheryl Boston, Naomi and Rachael Johndrow, Amanda Huff, Chris Cummings (whom he raised as a son), Samantha and Rusty Hall, Paul Lilly, Michelle Crowder and Michael Bolton Jr.; and 20 great-grandchildren. He joined the Army in 1942, serving time in the infantry during WWII in N. Africa, Anzio and then into Germany. He felt his greatest honor was being one of the soldiers liberating the prisoners from Auschwitz. He retired 21 years later at Ft. Lee. After his military career he was an Inspector for the Virginia Department of Highways until his retirement in 1986. A lifetime member of Glen Allen American Legion Post 244, 11th District for 50 years, he was adjutant 25 years, Post Commander for two, receiving a dedicated service award prior to his death, and was a lifetime member of Glen Allen VFW Post 10657. He and his wife were lifetime members of Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, joining the squad during its second year, both being among the first EMT graduates. The past 10 years he worked as a volunteer driver and in the pharmacy at McGuire's Veterans Hospital. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Monday. Alice R. Keeton, 75, of Richmond, passed away September 5, 2002. She was the widow of Lennie E. Keeton. She is survived by three sons, Robert L. and Forrest Keeton and David M. Roberson Jr.; two daughters, Betty R. Hertless and Lynn K. Ellington; two brothers, one sister, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Keeton was a longtime member of Westover Baptist Church and a volunteer teacher's assistant at Southampton Model School.
