Dr. Ben Judy dies at age 79
Dec 14, 2001
Samuel Benjamin Judy's call to medicine was so strong he forfeited a professional football career and two would-be retirements.
Dr. Ben Judy, who served the town of Clarksville for 43 years and continued to practice in North Carolina, died Saturday at 79. He was preparing to go to the office that morning when he collapsed, said his wife, Mildred.
"He really was honest and took his time with patients," she said. "He was notorious for not being on schedule because he took that time. Someone said yesterday, 'He's the gruffest, most gentle person I have ever known.' That really was him."
He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1943. He played football for Tech and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but chose medicine instead. He earned a degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1948 and did his residency at Richmond's Stuart Circle Hospital.
The family practitioner opened a medical practice in Clarksville in 1949, locating there at a friend's invitation.
"He's an icon here in Clarksville," said Dr. Reginald S. Young, local dentist. "He delivered babies and he took care of emergencies. He went on house calls for years. He was one of the best diagnosticians I have ever known."
Young recalled that for many years, Dr. Judy was the only practicing physician in Clarksville. In 1979, the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year.
After selling the Judy Clinic to South Boston Hospital, he worked briefly in Brookneal and at the Mecklenburg County Correctional Center at Boydton.
Moving to the mountains of Waynesville, N.C., was a joy to the West Virginia native who enjoyed the outdoors.
After seven years with the Hazelwood Family Practice in Waynesville, Dr. Judy began working with Westcare Family Medicine in Franklin, N.C.
"He was so popular in Waynesville, that people followed his practice, driving 45 miles each way to see him," Mrs. Judy said.
Dr. Judy was a Diplomate and life member of the American Academy of Family Practice, a life member of the Virginia Medical Society and a member of the North Carolina Medical Society.
In 1992 he was named to Virginia Tech's All Century Football Team.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janelle Langford of Clarksville; three sons, Billy Judy of Gibsonville, N.C., Jess Judy of Nashville, Tenn., and S.B. "Bubba" Judy Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; a stepson, Don Lamb of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Miller of Loudon, Tenn.; six grandchildren, one step-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held Tuesday in Waynesville, N.C. A memorial service will be held in Clarksville at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clarksville Baptist Church.
