BROOKES
Samuel Hunt Brookes, age 80, of Keysville, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Dorothy C. Brookes; one daughter, Martha Roberta Brookes of Richmond; one son-in-law, Jim Shugart of Richmond; one niece, Roberta Brookes Shelton of Boydton; and one cousin, Sam Brookes of Roanoke. He is the son of the late Roberta Ingram Brookes and John Samuel Brookes, and the grandson of the late Martha (Mattie) Priddy Ingram of Keysville. Mr. Brookes was the retired owner and operator of Brookes Motor Company and Brookes Oil Company until his retirement in 1981. Sam was an avid flyer and had been a flight instructor during World War II. He had owned his own plane since 1942, and continued to fly, until for health reasons, had to stop at two years ago. Also, he loved hunting, fishing, and his home workshop where he mainly enjoyed working with metals. He was a member of the Cedar Hill Hunt Club from its inception, and was a member of the Briery Presbyterian Church. He served as deacon and treasurer for many years when the Keysville Presbyterian Church was in operation. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 15. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, in the Village Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte Court House. Donations may be made to the Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad, where Sam served for eight years, or the charity of choice.

BURGESS
Anchorage resident Christina "Chrissy" Marie Burgess died in her sleep Saturday morning, June 9, 2001, from complications of diabetes., a disease she had for 25 years. She was born July 22, 1972 in Richmond, Virginia. She died in her home in Anchorage, Alaska, a place she loved for its beauty, a place where she felt free to be who she was meant to be. Chrissy graduated from Tucker High School in Richmond, Virginia in 1990 and received a BA in English from Virginia Commonwealth University, also in Richmond, Virginia, in 1995. Chrissy was a resident of Alaska off and on since 1995, living in Anchorage, Eagle River and Juneau. She was an employee of
Wells Fargo, a volunteer for the Lion's Club and also did volunteer work while working at the National Bank of Alaska. She attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Anchorage. Chrissy enjoyed white water rafting, outdoor activities, reading and crafts. Chrissy was loved and will be missed so much by all of her family and friends but most especially by her mother, Martha McConnell Burgess of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to her mother, Chrissy is survived by her father, Norman Wayne Burgess of Mechanicsville, Virginia; her grandfather, Norman J. Burgess of Callao, Virginia; her grandmother, Hope Lewis McConnell of Lynchburg, Virginia; her uncle, George G. McConnell and aunt, Linda McConnell; her cousins, Melissa and Holly McConnell of Forest; her uncle, Dr. James J. McConnell of Wytheville, Virginia; and her cousin who was like a brother, Michael Shane McConnell of Laytonsville, Maryland. Chrissy is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Lynchburg, Concord, Appomattox and Farmville areas as well as in St. Clairsville, Ohio and Fairfax, Virginia. There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Elon Presbyterian Church in Elon, Virginia. Dennis Ryan Crump, 59, of Colonial Heights, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. Mr. Crump was the proprietor of Hardwood Floors by D.R. Crump and a member of Bellwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ryan and Helen Irene Jefferies Crump. He is survived by his wife, Mikki Crump; children, Danny Crump and wife, Cindy, Richard Crump and wife, Rebecca, Juanita (Nita-Rea) Mueller and husband, Kenny, James Crump and wife, Linda, Sheila Crump, Jonathan Dickens and Cary Dickens; ten loving grandchildren; a sister, Dottie Beach; loving family friends and business associates. Mrs. Virginia Lynette Starke Gentry, 91, of Richmond, went home to be with the Lord June 13, 2001. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Landron E. Gentry. Lynette is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Joe Martin; daughter, Marie Moore; and son, James Gentry; foster daughter, Regina Nelson; and seven grandchildren, Amber Barts, Lynette and Jennifer Moore, Eddie Barton, Teresa Madden, Bobbie Jean Gentry and Lisa Ann Gentry; eight great-grandchildren. GORDON
In Memory of Dr. John B. Gordon Sr., born on April 12, 1914 to the late Joseph Henry and Ellen Devolia Gordon of Elizabeth City, N.C. He passed on June 11, 2001. He was married to the former Thelma Mae Busbee Gordon of Bartow, Fla. and they had four children, Mrs. Ethel Devolia Gordon Davis, John B. Gordon Jr. (deceased), Thurman W. Gordon and Vernon W. Gordon. There are 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was licensed and ordained by his uncle, Dr. P.A. Bishop, at his home church of First Baptist in Rich Square, N.C. Dr. Gordon served as pastor at the following churches: First Baptist Church - Hominy Village, VA.; First Union Baptist Church - Chesterfield County, Virginia; Mangohick Baptist Church - King William County, Virginia and St. John Baptist Church - Milford, Va. Dr. Gordon served in the following organizations - President of Minister's Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, Moderator of the Shiloh Baptist Association, Executive Board of the YMCA, Advisory Board of the Lead Poisoning Agency, Board of Director and Treasurer of East End Development, Inc., and a lifetime member of the NAACP. He also served as the Vice President of Minster's Fellowship of East End, Executive Board of Lott Casey Baptist. Foreign Mission Convention, and finally he was the founder of Bethlehem Baptist Day Nursery and former pastor of Bethlehem Baptist, 1920 Fairmount Avenue, Richmond, Va. for over 30 years. He served in the Marine Corps as Chaplain Assistant for two years during World War II. Dr. Gordon graduated from Virginia Union University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Arts degree from the School of Theology. Dr. Gordon was a member of East End Lodge No. 233, F.&A.M., P.H.A. His hobby was fishing. Dr. John Bishop Gordon's influence will never be forgotten in the city of Richmond. His contributions and signature will forever remain in the minds and hearts of all who had the privilege to know him. He will be greatly missed. Dr. Gordon's remains may be viewed on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. (only) at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1920 Fairmount Ave., where eulogistic services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Dr. Victor L. Annie Davis Ligon, 91, widow of Adolphus Owen Ligon, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center-North in Covington, Ky. Born October 18, 1909 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Lee Davis and Frances Ladd. A longtime resident of Clarksville, she married Adolphus on November 13, 1927. Annie was a member of the Clarksville Baptist Church and she worked for Burlington Industries for over 26 years. Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clarksville Baptist Church with interment following at Oakhurst Cemetery in Clarksville. Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Jean L. "Baby Jean" and Herbert "Shag" Pierce of Florence, Ky. and Betsy L. Hugh Thornton Longest, 83, of Gloucester, Va., passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Longest was born December 8, 1917 in Bruington, Va. He was the son of the late Hugh Garnett Longest and Roberta Ellen Longest. Mr. Longest served in the Army during WWII, afterward he entered the field of banking and retired after 34 years from Crestar. He was a member of Newington Baptist Church and was active in civic affairs having served as treasurer of local chapters of the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society and the Heart Fund. Mr. Longest is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Longest; one son, Blake Longest; two grandsons, Phillip Longest and Dustin Longest; and three sisters, Juliette Rowe, Louise Robinson, and Edith Powers. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. in Newington Baptist Church by Rev. Michael Gray. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nell Virginia Mardis McCubbin, 82, of Mineral, Va., died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the Louisa Healthcare Center. She was born November 20, 1918, the daughter of the late Lonnie and Artie Mardis. She is survived by her two daughters, Linda M. Warren, Richmond, Va. and Sara M. Bright, Mineral, Va.; a granddaughter, Laura M Marchese, Richmond; a niece, Nadine Jackson; and a nephew, Marion Francis Mardis, both of Michigan. Kimberly Sue Neff, age 40, of Parker Drive, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at her residence. Ms. Neff was born in Petersburg, Va., a daughter of Edwin Farnsworth and Sue Young Neff. She has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Virginia Commonwealth University, doctoral work at the University of Tennessee, and was a fellow at the Menninger Institute in Topeka, Kan. She was a licensed social worker in Kansas and in South Carolina. She was an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves and National Guard. Mrs. Neff was currently employed with the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department. She was predeceased by a twin brother, Kent Edwin Neff; paternal grandmother, Muriel Males Neff; and maternal grandparents, Wilbert and Vada Christy Young of Vandergrift, Pa. Surviving are her parents, Edwin F. and Sue Neff of Conway; one sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Trygve Tell Teigen of Chester, Va; paternal grandfather, Fred F. Neff of Vandergrift, Pa.; two nieces, Erin Lynn Teigen and Shannon Ashley Teigen of Chester, Va.; and a beloved cat, Picard.
