Daniel Perley Covey, 28, of Richmond, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, after a long, often courageous battle. He was the beloved only son of Perley and Julia Sheehan Covey; brother of Geline and Gayle Covey; brother-in-law of Steven DeVico; uncle of Melissa Covey and Alex Molochko; and godson of J. Alvernon
Smith Jr. and Sally Smith. He is also survived by loving uncles, aunts, cousins, friends. Danny loved books, his friends, girls, his family, animals, scripture, babies and old people. He brought much more joy than pain in his short life, and he was the kindest, most generous spirit of us all. He was a 1992 graduate of Fork Union military Academy. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Christian Wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 12 noon followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Smithie H. Deese departed this life April 6, 2001. She is survived by a devoted husband, Hazel Deese; a daughter, Rosalie Johnson; a loving sister, Louise H. LaVerne L. Denton, 73. of Richmond, died Sunday, April 8, 2001. Mrs. Denton was predeceased by her twin sister, Ivy L. Stowe. Survivors include her husband, Edward S. Denton Sr.; two sons, E. Selden Denton Jr. and R. Scott Denton Sr. and wife, Debra; her daughter, Robin D. and husband, Mike May; two brothers, E. Berkley Pitts and wife, Janice, R. DIXON
John Kelly Dixon Jr., 81, of Richmond, died April 7, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Augusta (Ava) Dixon, and their children, Christine and her husband, Robert Jennings, Katherine Anne and her husband, Jack Wilfong, John K. Dixon III and his wife, Christine; and their grandchildren, Jacqueline Kelly Glen, Ryan and Lara Wilfong, John K. IV and Robert Dixon; his daughter, Dorothy Gannon and his grandson, Ronnie; and his four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Phyllis Bourne, Frances Poe and Grace and her husband, Charles Porch. After 24 years of service, he retired from the USMC as Sargeant Major, having served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II and the Korean War, awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Valor. He also retired from Sears and Roebuck after 20 years. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. EASTER
Abraham "Abe" Easter Sr., 75, of Richmond, died April 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn J. Easter; sons, Abraham Benjamin Jr., Larry Edward, Earnest Ellsworth Sr., and Charles Andre Easter; sister, Betty Joyce Barnet; four grandchildren. Mr. Easter was a retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Three, with over 30 years of dedicated service to his country. During WWII, he served with the Navy, and during the Korean Conflict and Vietname War, he served with the Army, for which he was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for his valor during these times. After retiring from the Army, Mr. Easter worked as a teacher for many years with the Seafares International Union at Harry Lundeberg School in Piney Point, Md. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Monday (today) at Bon Air Christian Church, 2071 Buford Rd., Richmond, Va.

Raymond Floyd Edwards, 87, died April 7, 2001. He was the husband of Margaret
Williams Edwards. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Merilyn E. Nunnally of Roanoke Rapids, N.C. and Judith E. Rushing of Cury, N.C.; four sisters, Bessie E. Allen of Richmond, Margaret E. Cifers of Emporia, Maebelle E. Burgess of Courtland, Dot E. Lassiter of Boykins; two brothers, Dudley G. Edwards of Jarrett and Horace O. Edwards of Branchville; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Monumental United Methodist Church, with burial in the Emporia Cemetery. Beatrice Duncan Friday, 76, of New Canton, Va., departed this life on April 7, 2001. Her husband Robert Friday preceded her in death. Her two stepdaughters and stepsons survive her. GOSLING
Graydon Thomas "Wes" Gosling, 68, died suddenly at his home, Triple G. Farm, on Saturday, April 7, 2001. He was the son of the late Thomas A. and Jessie Nutt Gosling and predeceased by his son, Michael Gosling. He was a native of Boonville, N.Y. and was retired from Ft. Eustis Civil Service in the transportation department. He also served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was a member of Ware Episcopal Church in Gloucester and the American Quarterhorse Association. He is survived by his wife, Betty W. Gosling; his daughter-in-law, Blair Gosling Bickerson of Richmond; one sister, Bernadine J. Gosling of Prescott, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Lavern and her husband, Bruce Poe; niece, April Poe; and nephew, Ken Poe; and many, many special friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 10, at 2 p.m. in Ware Episcopal Church, by Rev. Daniel O. Worthington Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GRIMWOOD
David N. Grimwood, of Richmond, died Friday, April 6, after a long, brave struggle with prostate cancer. David Grimwood was born on a farm in Madison County, Ala., on January 22, 1920. He and his six brothers and sisters and their widowed mother flourished as a family despite personal adversity and the Great Depression. He attended Berea College from 1938 to 1942. Upon graduation with a B.S. in agriculture, he entered the Army Air Corps, training as a B-24 pilot. He married Eleanor Ruth Eakin on July 3, 1943, in Albany, Ga., where he was stationed. In 1944, he flew 25 combat missions out of San Giovanni Airfield in Foggia, Italy. Upon returning to the states, he served as flight instructor before receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. That same year he began a 35 year career with the Soil Conservation Service. In Kentucky he worked in Stanford, Danville, Paris, and Lexington, helping landowners implement terraces, waterways, ponds, crop plans, and other conservation measures. Promoted into administrative responsibilities, he moved to Syracuse, New York in 1961, to Burlington, Vermont in 1964, and to Richmond, Va. in 1967. As State Conservationist in Vermont and Virginia, he helped to coordinate local, state, and federal efforts to maintain and improve the natural resources of those states. Since 1980, he has enjoyed an active retirement in Richmond. He loved gardening, traveling, photography, fishing, reading, walking, and water aerobics. He loved to spend time with his wife, his sons, and daughters-in-law, his granddaughter, and a wide array of friends and relatives. David Grimwood fought for freedom during the war and for the welfare of his family and community during peace. He had a green thumb for plants and for people. He loved a good joke, he told a good story. He was a loving husband, an exemplary father, a doting grandfather, a generous friend, and an engaged citizen. His presence endures in a hundred landscapes and a thousand hearts. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor Eakin Grimwood; by his sons, Howard and Michael, and their wives, Carol and Linda; by his granddaughter, Miranda; by his sister, Martha Shinkle of Meridianville, Ala.; and by numerous nephews and nieces. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., Richmond. A memorial service will occur at the same place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11. John E. Hatcher, of Richmond, died April 7, 2001. Mildred Spivey Hines, age 79, of Montpelier, Va., widow of Charles B. Hines, died Sunday, April 8, 2001. She is survived by her son, Gardner Vaughan Jones; and daughter-in-law, Susan

Georgie Moon Kammeter, age 82, of Glen Allen, passed this life on April 7, 2001. "Georgie" was the widow of Fred L. Kammeter, her husband of 49 years. Mrs. Kammeter is survived by her son, Robert L. (Linny) Kammeter; and daughter-in-law, Debbie of Glen Allen; two grandchildren, Lori Kammeter Gunn of Chester, Va., and Kevin L. Kammeter, currently attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; two stepgrandchildren, George Moore IV and Dennis Moore, both of Richmond. Sam Kaufman passed away Sunday, April 8, 2001. He was born April 14, 1917, the son of the late Nathan L. and Mollie G. Kaufman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice. During WWII he served with the U.S. Navy in Australia. He was a member of Temple Beth El and owner of Kaufman's Clothiers on Williamsburg Rd. Mr. Kaufman was an avid golfer with a love of all sports. He is survived by his loving companion, Ann Piner. Other survivors are his son, Terry and wife, Teresa; two daughters, Margy Shea and husband, Bill and Ilene Hart; three grandchildren, Nicole Mahan, Jodi Burnley and Kristie Kaufman; two sisters, Gloria Sherman and Ruth Berkanholtz; brother-in-law, Allen Richter and wife, Ann; two nieces, Roslyn Hoffman and Jennifer Richter; two nephews, David Berkanholtz and Alan Hoffman.
