Mrs. Bessie Knakal Shaw, 94, formerly of Highland Springs, died Saturday, July 27, 2002 in High Point, N.C. Mrs. Shaw was born October 7, 1907 in Highland Springs, the daughter of Charles and Mary Knakal. She was a member of Westchester Baptist Church and prior to moving to High Point, had been a member of New Bridge Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter #4 O.E.S. in Highland Springs. Preceding her in death was her husband of 64 years, George Shaw, as well as three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Barry Eckert of High Point, N.C., with whom she had lived for several years, and Audrey and Dieter Ebeling of Bremerton, Washington; three grandchildren, Donna Osborne of Trinity, Barry Douglas Eckert of
Johnson City, Tenn., and Heather Cantrell of Bend, Oregon; three great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment Forest Lawn. Mrs. Elaine B. Taylor, 90, of Providence Forge, went home to her heavenly Father July 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Joseph E. Thompson III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Thompson Jr. of Lawrenceville, Va., passed away on early Friday morning, July 26, 2002 at his residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joseph, lovingly called "Jo-Jo" was an only child. In addition to his parents, his uncle, Tenus Thompson; aunt, Eddye Fennell; aunt, Lovis (Theodore) Thomas; and many cousins, he claimed as part of his family, his godmother, Dr. Virginia H. Russell; and a long-time family friend as an older brother, William "Buck" Singleton. Joseph was a graduate of Brunswick Senior High School, Lawrenceville, and Hobart College, Geneva, New York. He did graduate studies in Education at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia. Joseph held several positions in the insurance industry and as an investment broker. At the time of his death, he was a financial counselor at the Restaurant School, University of Pennsylvania, a position he dearly enjoyed. The family invites friends to attend a memorial literary and musical hour in Saint Paul's Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceville, on Tuesday, June 30, 2002 from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at Saint Paul's Memorial Chapel, with interment in Saint Paul's Memorial Chapel Cemetery. YEATTS
Archer L. Yeatts Jr., long-time educator and State Government official, died on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the age of 82. He was a native of Pittsylvania County and grew up on a farm outside of Chatham. Mr. Yeatts graduated from the County schools and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Agricultural Education. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Mr. Yeatts was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Virginia T. Ford Yeatts; a son, Judge Archer L. Yeatts III and wife, Elaine of Richmond; a daughter, Kathryn (Kitty) Y. Davis and husband, George of Richmond; three grandchildren, Carole E. Yeatts of Richmond, Laura Y. Thomson of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Philip S. Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Ann Y. Pulliam of Louisville, Ky.; two stepsons, Henry R. Ford Jr. of Richmond, and Charles R. Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Elinor Moore Yeatts in 1997. Beginning his career as an educator, Mr. Yeatts taught Vocational Agriculture in Pittsylvania County, and served as a teacher-supervisor in a five county area in Southside, Virginia. After receiving his Masters Degree, he taught for two years at VPI. He joined the State Department of Education in 1958 as Assistant Supervisor of Agricultural Education. Mr. Yeatts later served as Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture for three years, and then was appointed an Executive Assistant to Governor Mills Godwin in 1966. In 1969, Governor Godwin appointed him to the ABC Board, where he served until retirement in 1983. While Chairman of the ABC Board in 1976, he served as President of the National Association of Alcoholic Beverage Control Officials. Following retirement, he served two 4-year terms on the Richmond Metropolitan Authority and two terms as a member of the State Board of Corrections. Mr. Yeatts was active in his church and the Masonic fraternity. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church for 40 years, serving as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. Since 1998, he had been a member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He was a 50 year and a 33rd degree Mason and was Past Master of Manchester Lodge No. 14, AF&AM. He also held membership in Varina Lodge No. 272, and Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24; Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, serving as Venerable Master in 1985 and a member of the Scottish Rite Guard; and ACCA Temple Shrine. He was a member and Past Director of Richmond Court No. 16, Royal Order of Jesters and Past President of the Past Masters' Club. Mr. Yeatts was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Masonic Home of Virginia in 1978. He was elected President of the Board two years later and served until 1990, a period during which the Home experienced its greatest expansion. He had resided in the Masonic Village since 1996. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 29, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A Masonic memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 3:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Rd., with a reception afterwards. Julia Bolling Bradshaw passed away Sunday April 8, 2001 at her home in Tappahannock, Va. She was a loving mother and avid gardener. She was born June 18, 1922 in Blackstone, Va., the daughter of Zula and John Stith Bolling. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, James Edward Bradshaw; daughters, Barbara Tomczak and husband, Randy of Carlsbad, Calf. and Nancy Gottwald and husband, Jim of Goochland, Va. Grandchildren include Christopher St. James of Beverly Hills, Calif., James Matthew Gottwald, and Sarah Wren Gottwald of Goochland, Va. BRINSER
Ray Coble Brinser who passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001 was born June 8, 1908 in Richmond, Va., was the son of the late John Wesley and Alda Coble Brinser. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Clareine Sheppe Brinser. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews. He attended Richmond Public Schools and McGuire University, where he excelled in football and track. Mr. Brinser was a life-long member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church. In 1941, the family business, E.C. Brinser & Sons, manufacturer of agricultural tool handles, burned. In 1943, Mr. Brinser, with his partner, formed the Eastern Handle Corp. of which he was Vice President and Superintendent. In 1980 at the age of 72, he began carving in wood. He was self- taught, producing many quality carvings and sculptures in wood and stone. He was a member of the National Wood Carving Association and a Charter Member of the North American Bluebird Society. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday (tonight). A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Maury Cemetery. It is suggested that memorials be made to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Doris Jean Robertson Bullard of Manakin-Sabot, Va., formerly of Louisville, Ky., died April 6, 2001 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mamie Campbell Robertson; her brothers, John and Harry Robertson; and her son-in-law, Don Kerr. She is survived by four children, Cindy Blaske of Louisville, Ky., Pam Kerr, Manakin-Sabot, Chip Wood, Osage, Oka. and Sandy Smith, Kankakee, Ill. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Lori and Corey Blaske, Erin Kerr, Kate Wood and Austin and Lyndsey Smith. Also surviving a brother, Don; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice and Ruth Robertson. Madaline Faulconcer Clarke, 92, of Barboursville died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at her residence. She was born July 25, 1908 in Scary, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Reginald Faulconer and Bessie Tinder Faulconer and wife of the late William Mosby Clarke. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Clarke Stoutamyer and husband, Julian of Bradenton, Fla., Susan Garth Clarke of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a son, Bruce Reginald Clarke and wife, Judy of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Wash Fray of Madison; three sisters, a brother, nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. James E. "Jim" Coggins, 65, a 23 year resident of Hampton, formerly of Richmond, died Saturday, April 7, 2001. Jim was a Korean War Navy veteran and spent most of his professional career as a maintenance engineer at many Richmond area hospitals. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Rosalie C. Coggins of Hampton; a son, James E. Coggins; stepchildren, Dorothy Randolph, Nancy Bragdon, Jerrold Lowe, Michael Lowe, Douglas Lowe and Donald Lowe; 23 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and was raised from childhood by the late Charles Armstrong. Edward A. Coudriet Jr., 79, went to join the Lord on April 7, 2001, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jeannette. He is survived by son, Charles and wife, Tootie; and children, Kathrine, Charlotte and Charles Jr.; and by son, Stephen and his wife, Ginny and children, Danny and Ben; and by daughter, Susan Freeman and her husband, Ralph and children, Allison and Anne Stewart. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph J. Coudriet. He is also survived by brother, Leon F. Coudriet of Williamsport, Pa.; by sister, Marie M. Shief of Cogan Station, Pa.; and by brother, Norbert L. Coudriet of Montvale, N.J. He was a combat veteran of World War II and of the Korean War. In Korea he served with the 1st Cavalry Division as a battalion commander and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Mr. Coudriet was one of the seven original founders and also served as commissioner of the league that subsequently became the Tuckahoe Little League. He had an active business career and in 1975, he founded Richmond Industrial Corp. He was a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, of the Converting Equipment Manufacturing Association, of the American Society of military Engineers, of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a life member of Richmond Country Club and of the Knights of Columbus. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joseph W.
