Deacon Herbert D. Carolina Sr. of Richmond, departed this life Friday, July 26, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Berinetha Carolina; two sons, Herbert D. Carolina Jr. (Shelby) and Don H. Carolina; two daughters, Yvonne C. Hamilton and Glennis H. Flippen (John Sr.); four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Elizabeth Carolina, Wilhelmina Dennis and Maggie C. Branch (Richard); four sisters-in-law, Lottie Carolina, Mary Carolina, Juanita Munford and Marva Munford; brothers-in-law, Nathan Munford, Wallace Munford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, Zion Baptist Church Family, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 30, 1 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, 2006 Decatur St. Dr. Robert Pettis, pastor, officiating. Interment Maury Cemetery. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service. DiGIACOMO
In loving memory of Beverly E. DiGiacomo, 46, of Colonial Heights, who died suddenly Saturday, July 27, 2002. She was a native of Yorktown and daughter of the late Carlton Elks. She was a devoted wife and mother, as well as, best friend to her children. She is survived by her husband, John J. DiGiacomo; a daughter, Laura D. McManus and her husand, Jeff of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, Jon Paul DiGiacomo of Colonial Heights; her mother, Inez F. Elks of Yorktown; two sisters, Doris Lake and her husband, Don of Frederick, Md., Connie Lumley and her husband, Mike of Yorktown; and a brother, Carl R. Elks of Charlottesville. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at Highland United Methodist Church, Colonial Heights, with the Rev. William E. Rawlings III officiating. The family will receive friends after the memorial service until 12 noon at the church. Interment will be at Park Lawn Cemetery, Hampton, Va. at 3 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Colonial Heights Fire & EMS, P.O. HASELTON
Rita Mulvaney-Haselton, born January 14, 1926, Alder Brook, N.Y. Rita Mulvaney-Haselton's indefatigable spirit escaped the pain that had racked her body over the last 12 months on Saturday, July 27, 2002. She joins her personal Savior Jesus Christ, her first husband of 41 years and father of their children, Joseph Mulvaney as well as her brother, Robert Ryan, and her sister, Kathryn Facteau. She will also be reunited in Heaven with her cherished granddaughter, Alexa Kathryn Mulvaney. She is survived by her husband, Frank Haselton; and six children and their spouses, Kevin and Debroah Mulvaney of Santa Monica, Calif., Margarita and James McLean of Reno, Nev., Stephen and Kathleen Mulvaney of Mechanicsville, Va., Kent and Dr. Debra Haselton of Iowa City, Iowa, Sharon and John Amdall of Washington, Ill., and Linda and David Cox of Standardville, Va. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Dana and Tyler Mulvaney, Shawna Isom, Alison and Meredith McLean, Stephanie, Mary Kate and Pamela Mulvaney. SPC Christopher Trader and Laurel Cox; as well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Rita is also survived by her siblings, Teresa Eshelman of Alder Brook, N.Y., Muriel Rodgers of Dallas, Texas, Patricia Ryan of Summerville, S.C., Ray Ryan of Syracuse, N.Y., Rosemary Irwin of Anchorage, Alaska, Bernard "Rusty" Ryan of Westfield, N.J., Marguerite "Peggy" Zerrer of Flemington, N.J., Barbara Jeanne Burns of Atlanta, Ga., John Ryan of Syracuse, N.Y., and Joan Oderkirk of Batavia, N.Y. Rita began her life in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state graduating from AuSable Forks, N.Y. high school in 1941. She then attended S.U.N.Y., Plattsburgh, N.Y., received a B.S. degree in Education and then taught school in Washingtonville, N.Y., and elsewhere prior to having her family. Rita then raised her three children, sold real estate and had other commercial interests while living in Demarest, N.J. where she lived for 35 years. Her many lifelong friends will remember her as a free spirit with many passionate interests, not the least of which was her competitive game of bridge and tireless devotion to her parish of St. Joseph's in Demarest. Rita's gifts of extraordinary spiritual wisdom and humor were freely shared with many throughout her life. Her influence lives on in the many lives she touched with her gentle hands. Friends are invited to gather in the common area at St. John's Catholic Church, 811 Nine Mile Rd., Highland Springs, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Thursday also at the church. HUGHES
Helen Carolyn Neese Hughes, age 67, of King William, died Sunday, July 28, 2002. Survived by her husband, Melvin H. Hughes; father, Rev. James E. Neese of Lexington, N.C.; brothers, James E. Neese Jr. and wife, Margaret of Lexington, N.C., Rodney D. Neese and wife, Mary Jane of Charlotte, N.C.; stepsons, Vernon Hughes of Harrisonburg, Va., Daniel Hughes and wife, Pamela of Richmond, Va.; stepdaughter, Anita Thomson and husband, Robert; stepgrandchildren, Samantha, Holly, Spencer Hughes, and Dylan Thomson; one niece, four nephews, and two great-nephews. She was born in Greensboro, N.C. and followed family during her father's ministry to Boston, Mass., Norfolk, Va., Richmond, Va. and Hollywood, Fla., returning to Reedsville, N.C. until her marriage to Mr. Hughes in 1971. She worked at radio station WLEE in Richmond and WFMY television in Greensville, N.C. Mrs. Hughes was an accomplished craft person excelling in toll painting, cross stitch, scrapbooking, etc. Remains rest at B.W. White Funeral Home, King William, where the family will receive friends on Monday, 7 to 9 p.m, and where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond. Rev. HUGHES
Lucy Seay Hughes of Richmond, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. She is survived by two children and their spouses, Rick and Katrina Hughes of Richmond, Valeri and Blair Lohmeyer of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Frazier Seay of Goochland and Thomas (Stokes) Seay of Tennessee; two grandchildren, Douglas Potts of Richmond and Austin Winfield Hughes of Richmond; two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the New Highland Baptist Church and Parham Road Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, corner of 301 and Shady Grove Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Richmond Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

JACKSON
Tate Andrew Jackson, age 7, of Chase City, passed away July 28, 2002. He was a rising second grade student at Chase City Elementary School, and was a loyal WWE wrestling fan, whose favorite was "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Tate was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charlie Jackson. He is survived by his parents, Tim and Patty Jackson; brother, Timmy Jackson Jr.; sister, Lindsay Jackson; stepbrother, Eric Tollerson; maternal grandmother, Helen Rogers, Boydton; maternal grandfather, Jimmy Allen, Greensboro, N.C.; paternal grandmother, Frances Jackson, Chase City; several aunts and uncles. Friends may call at Wood Funeral Service, Chase City, 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Black Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. KVASNICKA
George Phillip Kvasnicka, 68, of Church Road, widower of Virginia M. Kvasnicka, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at his residence. A Wake will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends afterwards until 8:30 p.m. A funeral Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, New Bohemia, will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be held at a later date.

LEWIS
Mrs. Blanche Campbell Lewis, of 1012 Mountain Rd., Halifax, Va., died July 28, 2002 at her home. She was born in Hanover Co., Va. on July 22, 1917 and was 85 years old. She was the daughter of Mr. Daniel Elliott Campbell and Mrs. Emma Beazley Campbell and was married to W.M. Lewis. She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband, W.M. Lewis of Halifax; two daughters, Catherine Lewis Maxwell of Charlotte, N.C. and Dorothy Lewis Dabney of Deland, Fla.; two sons, Richard Fielding Lewis of Fredericksburg, Va. and William Wardwell Lewis of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Amy Lewis Roberts, Mary Catherine Maxwell, Jane Meriwether Maxwell, Elizabeth Wiseman Lewis, John Elliott Townes Lewis, Ann Taylor Maxwell, and Lucy Smith Dabney. Preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Elizabeth Campbell, Mildred Campbell Broome, Catherine Campbell Wright, and one brother, Daniel Edward Elliott Campbell. Services for Mrs. Blanche Campbell Lewis will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, with Rev. David L. Booher conducting the service. Burial in the church cemetery. McNEAL
Charlotte Bromley McNeal, 81, of Lottsburg, Va., died on Friday, July 26, 2002. She was predeceased by her husband, Judson Thomas McNeal; her parents, Lloyd Edward and Anna Lewis Bromley; and four brothers. She is survived by two sisters, Elsie Hale, Lucille Newsome; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McNeal was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Melrose United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: American Heart Association, Memorial Center, Northumberland Chapter, P.O. Claudette C. Miller departed this life Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Parham Health Care Center. She is survived by two daughters, one devoted, Antoinette Whittaker and April Miller; one son, Ivan Miller; and a devoted son-in-law, James Whittaker; two granddaughters, NaShanda and Selena Miller; one grandson, Timothy Cureton; mother, Frances Carter; two brothers, Vincent and Leonard Carter Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Meredith and Louise Townsend of Washington, D.C.; a devoted niece, Felicia Joyner; and a host of other relatives and friends. Rose Mae Mitchell, 85, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 28, 2002. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Final arrangements are pending.

PALMER
Julia Sanders Palmer, 72, of Midlothian, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. She is survived by her sister, Mary Sue Parvin; a niece, Annalee Finch; a nephew and his wife, Cordell and Nancy Parvin; and a great-niece, Jill Parvin. Miss Palmer was an active member in Salisbury Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, elder, and Stephen's Minister. She was a 1951 graduate of Radford College, where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She taught elementary school in Illinois for 34 years, until her retirement in 1985. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Salisbury Presbyterian Church. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salisbury Presbyterian Church, 13621 Salisbury Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

PHILLIPS
Mrs. Shirley Mitchell Phillips, 73, was born into eternal life Sunday, July 28, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Hubert W. (Pete) Phillips of Emporia; one son, Dallas L. Phillips of Capron; two daughters, Carolyn P. Gillette and husband, Pope also of Capron, and Vivian P. (BeeBee) Clements and husband, Earl of Adams Grove; five grandchildren, Hollie Gillette and Emily Gillette of Capron, Phillip Clements of Adams Grove, Matthew and Caitlin Phillips of Emporia; two brothers, Donley Mitchell and wife, Anita of Ante, and Carlton Mitchell of Norfolk; one sister, Vivian Anne Cox and husband, James of Warrenton, Va.; and a dear sister-in-law, Ida Mitchell. Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of the late Ryland D. and Alice P. Mitchell, and was also preceded in death by a son, Ernie D. Phillips; and a brother, Howard B. Mitchell. Mrs. Phillips was an active member of Adams Grove Baptist Church, where she had served in many capacities including, former Deaconess, past president of WMU, Sunday School teacher, choir member and was a past treasurer. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday (tonight) at Owen Funeral Home, Jarratt. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Dry Bread Rd., Emporia, Va., with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. PRENTICE
Charles R. Prentice, 68, retired Master Sergeant, U.S. Army, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. He also retired from Fort Lee as a computer systems analyst and enjoyed crafting special wooden toys for kids. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Prentice; three daughters, Vandy Lenz of Painesville, Ohio, Kathleen Farrall of St. Leonard, Md., and Jennifer Miller of Hampton, Va.; mother, Juanita Prentice of Lake Wales, Fla.; brother, Richard Prentice of Painesville; sister, Betty Old of Ohio; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles' name to the American Heart Association.

The Reverend Samuel A. Scott of 1709 Joycelyn Court, Glen Allen, Va., entered into his eternal home on July 25, 2002. He will be profoundly missed by his loving family, wife of 46 years, Zenobia; son, Glen A. and his wife, Roxana; daughter, Letra Scott-Dennis and her husband, Vaughn; five grandchildren, who were his particular pride, Kelly Dennis, Samuel, Kendall, Aminta and Lauryn Scott; brothers, James A. Jr. and Robert F. Scott; also four sisters-in-law, Marian Scott, Mary Middleton, Roberta Plummer, Josephine Fleming; four brothers-in-law, Milton O., Joseph S., Carrol L. White and Thomas Fleming; devoted cousins, Sadie Sears, Josephine Norrell, Angela McLinn; and other cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E.
