Eunice Joy Knowles Martin, 73, of Bonita Springs, Fla. and formerly of Mechanicsville, departed this life January 13, 2002 after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Stanley Bernard Martin; a daughter, Stephanie Joy Martin; a son, Alton Andrew Martin and his wife, Jamie Baskerville Martin; and a sister, Marjorie Mann. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her brothers, Andrew and James Knowles; and her sisters, Edna Mitchell and Grace Parsley. She was a charter member of the Mechanicsville Baptist Church, and served on the Missions committee that founded West Hill Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (Today). Funeral services will be held at the Mechanicsville Baptist Church 12 noon Wednesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. James P. "Buddy" Mitchell of Richmond departed this life January 11, 2002. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Mary E. Virginia Higgason Mitchell, 92, of Richmond, widow of Alfred A. Mitchell, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2002. She is survived by a daughter, Lois M. Tillack; a son, Alfred A. "Buddy" Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Joan; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Elsie Didlake Parrish, 81, of Richmond, widow of Earl B. Parrish, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13, 2002. She was predeceased by her son, John Edward Didlake. She is survived by her daughter, Juanita Joyce; her son, Richard Didlake; daughter-in-law, Jean Didlake; stepchildren, Ann, Brenda, Betty, Mary and William; nine grandchildren, Shane, Keith, Tammy, Rita, Martha Kaye, Ricky, Mark, Jamie and Monie; also 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Elsie was loved by all and will be greatly missed. She was retired from Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. Al Smith, 80, formerly of Richmond, died at his home in Altamonte Springs, Fla. on January 12, 2002. Smith died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at the age of 93. She was born in County Clare, Ireland. She was married to the late Robert W. Smith, who passed away in January of 1940. Anna settled in Richmond and was retired from the American Tobacco Company. She is survived by her son, Robert Daniel "Danny" Smith; daughters, Inez and her husband, James T. Hendrick and Anna S. and her husband, Robert M. Cecchini of Tarpon Springs, Fla.; one sister, Sister Anna Therese McMahon of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; one brother, Thomas McMahon of Rensaleer, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a native of Petersburg, Va. and was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church, Petersburg. She is survived by her husband, Harvey Clarke Tarleton; two daughters, Sharron Gayle and her husband, Phillip Samuel Vaughan and Christie Marie Tarleton, both of Chesterfield; stepgrandchild, Raven Vaughan; her mother and father, Leslie Eugene and Beatrice P. Smith "Smitty" Verlander, 77, of Mechanicsville, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2002. Son of the late Charles Latane and Irma Taylor Verlander of Essex Co., he is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Theo Marshall Verlander; two sisters, Catherine V. "Kitty" Richardson and her husband, Frank D. Richardson Jr. and Anne V. Collins; many other family members and friends. Mr. Verlander attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 175. Margaret (Margie) K. Baronian, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, departed this life September 13, 2002. She was preceded in death by her first born son, John N. Baronian Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, John N. Baronian; daughter, Becky Greene; son, Steven A. Baronian; daughter-in-law, Luann; three wonderful grandchildren, Stephanie Margaret Greene, Harrison and Hayden Baronian; brother, James Karabedian and wife, Dorothy of Toledo, Ohio; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was an active member of St. James Armenian Church for many years and enjoyed playing tennis. She will be remembered for her fun loving spirit, zeal for life and her generosity to family and friends. Mrs. Baronian was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was her family and she lived every day caring for and loving them, and left beautiful memories which will be cherished forever. She will be deeply missed.
