LANG
Bertie Snead "Red" Lang, youngest son of Emma Haden and William Burton Lang, died Saturday, August 25, 2001 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ramona Garris Lang; three daughters, Vivian Hargrave, Linda Cox, and Lisa Flippen; two son-in-laws, Lloyd W. Hargrave and Robert A. Flippen Jr.; eight grandchildren, Amy H. Moore, Anna, Bryan and Rachel Hargrave, Carley Lovell, Lucy Mallory, Mariah and Hannah Flippen; two great-grandchildren, Quillen Hargrave and Singrid Pullin; three sisters, Pearl Haden, Creola Urban and Nancy Kehoe; many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. Mr. Lang was an employee of Safeway Stores Inc. for 40 years, most of which he was a manager. From 1979 until he retired in 1991, he was the manager of the Laburnum Avenue/Williamsburg Rd. Safeway. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Corinth United Methodist Church, Williamsburg Rd., Sandston, where Mr. Lang was an active member for over 37 years. LEWIS
Donald E. Lewis, 70, of Varina, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Miriam M. Lewis; two sons, Donald E. Lewis Jr. and his wife, Juanita and Dale S. Lewis and his wife, Cindi; one daughter, Valerie Headley and her husband, Henry; his mother, Vertie M. Lewis; four special grandchildren, one step-granddaughter; one sister, Delores Becker of California; one brother, Lester (Pee Wee) Lewis; other devoted family members and friends. Mr. Lewis retired from the Division of Motor Vehicles after 31 years of service. He served his country in the U.S. Navy completing 33 years of service. He was an active member of Varina Lions Club and the Lakeside Moose Lodge #1714. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Monday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a Moose Service at 7:30 p.m., and where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by Rev. Elizabeth Wallace Mann, age 98, of Richmond, widow of Harry C. Mann died Saturday, August 25, 2001. She was preceded in death by her son, J. Cameron Mann. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret M. and Frank F. Fergusson Jr. of Richmond; also six grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren; her niece, Martha C.
Johnson of Wisconsin; her nephew, William E. Camack of Florida. Mrs. Mann was a member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. John Patillo of Chesterfield, age 77, son of John Henry Patillo, EMI USN and Mammie L.
Brown Patillo departed this earthly life August 24, 2001 and accepted his permanent assignment in heaven with our Heavenly Father. Rev. Patillo has preached from coast to coast. He accepted Christ and was called to the ministry at age 9. His closing assignment was associate pastor and treasurer at Harbor Light Baptist Church. He also served as Chaplain in the Navy Sea Cadet Corps., Navy Active Duty, December 1943 to January 1946, returned to Reserve Duty drill pay status, served as advanced Seaman E-3, advanced to RD3 pay grade E-4, advanced to E-7 in 1950. He went back into active duty in 1953 and served under different assignments as Sr. Chief E-8 OSCS. In capacity of USN OSCS he served many duties including command chief on various "tin cans" and other ships. Navy Sea Cadet Corps. Ensign 01 (boot officer). On December 28, 1958, he made Lieutenant Sea Cadet Corps.-03. He served for Richmond Police Department, 1953 to 1964, the Department of Corrections, 1964 to 1984, over 50 years in Sea Cadet League, Fleet Reserve Association and Navy Enlisted Reserve Association, and 25 year member of Forest View Rescue Squad. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Patillo and brother, Gerald Patillo. Survived by his loving and devoted wife, Virginia Hall Patillo; children, Patricia Fraizer, Nancy Lou Patillo, John Calvin Patillo, Clyde Hall, Dale Dickerson, Carolyn Hall, Kay Harrison and Russell Hall; three granddaughters, six grandsons, five great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters, a host of nieces and nephews, a church family and friends who all will miss him until we meet on the other side. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Flora Hudson Slayton died Saturday, August 25, 2001. She was the widow of Addison E. Slayton Sr. She is survived by one son, Addison E. Slayton Jr. and his wife, Barbara; sister, Elizabeth Owens; brother, Stanley Hudson; two grandchildren, the Rev. David E. Slayton, Galax, Va., Elizabeth E. Camuzzi, Richmond; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Slayton was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church. She was a retired school teacher having taught in Lunenburg County, Chesterfield County and the City of Richmond. She was a member Alpha Delta Kappa Educational Sorority. Katherine Virginia Crump Wickham, 91, of Montpelier, Va., died August 25, 2001. She was the widow of Thomas W. Wickham and is survived by her daughter, Carole W. Taylor and son-in-law, Dr. Welford D. Taylor of Richmond; a granddaughter, Virginia Welford Taylor of Austin, Texas; and a nephew, Robert L. Crump of Chesterfield. Mrs. Wickham was a native of Bethia, Va. and was the daughter of Julian and Julia Crump. She attended Blackstone College for Girls. A long-time member of the Church of Our Saviour in Montpelier, she was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hanover Chapter No. 130.
