Rev. Daniel (Dan) James Merkh Sr., 74, of Suffolk, Va., died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Camden, N.J., the son of the late Walter Merkh Sr. and Ruth Blackner Merkh. Rev. Merkh and his family spent one year in Lausanne, Switzerland learning the French language, four years in the Ivory Coast of West Africa, and nine and one- half years in France as missionaries. He was a member of Ryanwood Free Will Baptist Church, Vero Beach, Fla. and retired as a minister from First Free Will Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret
Johnson Merkh of Suffolk; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Beth) M. and Richard Redd of Suffolk; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel J. Merkh Jr. of Chester, Conn., Timothy Karl and Amy Frances Merkh of Knob Noster, Mo., Raymond Earl and Lisa Elizabeth Merkh of Franklin, Va., and Jonathan Mark Merkh of Nashville, Tenn.; daughters-in-laws, Kathy Oden of Norfolk, Va., and Rhonda Merkh of Nashville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; brothers, Walter Merkh Jr. of Fort Pierce, Fla., Frederick Merkh of Collingswood, N.J., and Burwell David Merkh of Medford, N.J. Cleveland Perry Jr., 79, of Sandston, died Friday, April 12, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Perry. He is survived by three brothers, David and Frank Perry, both of Flatwoods, Ky. and Owen Perry of Riverside, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Terrell; a stepson, Donald Phillips; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Nellie Wigington Roberts, 88, born June 4, 1913, died April 9, 2002 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's and cancer. Nellie was a member of Belmont Methodist Church and active in the Young at Heart Club. She was a retired employee of the State Highway Department of Virginia. She is survived by the families of her great-nephews and great-nieces, Chris Whiteside, Jerry Thurston, Barbara Pittman, Arthur Thurston, Keith Thurston; and her devoted canine, Sadie. Mrs. Sisson was a graduate of Longwood College, a former elementary school teacher, and was retired from Trigon in 1986. Evelyn P. Towers of Richmond passed away April 13, 2002. Sarah Vest Whitman, 86, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2002. She was the widow of Stephen T. Whitman. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Richmond, and was a homemaker.
