John "Alan" Dunnington, 17, of Powhatan, died as the result of a car accident and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 30, 2001. He was a student at Powhatan High School. He is survived by his parents, Paul and Jane Dunnington; his brother, Paul E. Dunnington III; his paternal grandmother, Hazel W. Dunnington; devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. The family will receive friends Thursday, November 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be held Friday 2 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park. Charles A. Fleming Sr., 78, of Richmond, died Monday, October 29, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mildred M. Brooks Fleming; one son, Charles A. "Skip" Fleming Jr.; three grandchildren, Charles A. "Chucky" Fleming III (Wren), Charles Daniel "Danny" Fleming and Shawn Allen Fleming; and one sister, Marguerite F. Waters. Mr. Fleming was the owner of Fleming's Radiator Service, Inc. He was a member of Babcock Lodge No. 322 AF&AM, Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and ACCA Temple Shrine, where he was in the Ceremonial Cast. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, November 1. Richard Leonard "Pete" Fulgham Sr., 87, of Chester, died October 29, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Fulgham; children, Caleb Richard Fulgham and Richard L. Fulgham Jr.; and granddaughter, Jeanine Bohner of Bay City, Texas. He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Fulgham Marshall of Chester, Evelyn Fulgham Bohner of Bay City, Texas; and son, Joel W. Fulgham of Chesterfield; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Fulgham was retired from Reynolds Metals Excrusion Plant on Reymet Rd. with 20 years of service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and where funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Thursday. GEHRKEN
Caroline Petty Gehrken died October 31, 2001 after an extended illness. Born in Charleston, W.Va., April 12, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Laurence A. Petty and Virginia Jarrett Petty. A graduate of Charleston High School, she attended King
Smith Studio School in Washington, D.C. and fulfilled one of her dreams by studying ballet at the School of American Ballet in New York City under the direction of George Balachine. She also performed with the Radio City Corps de Ballet in New York City. Following her passion for ballet, she began the "Caroline Petty School of Dance" in Charleston, W.Va. and later taught classes in Franklin, Va. and Savannah, Ga. She remained an avid balletomane throughout her life. As an artist, she painted furniture, tinware and glassware using the techniques of Early American Decoration. A combination of her creativity and her gift of artistic expression were displayed in her exquisite and often thought-provoking flower arrangements. She enlightened her family and friends about the beauty found everywhere in this world. She shared with them the charm found in birds and their nests, animals, flowers, insects and many of nature's odd creations. She served on the Altar Guild and as a flower arranger for Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Franklin, Va., Christ Church in Savannah, Ga and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Courtland, Va. She was a member of the Franklin Book Club, the Franklin Garden Club, the Gordonston Garden Club in Savannah, Ga. and the Junior League. She is survived by her husband, George A. Gehrken; her five children, Sarah Page Stroud of Virginia Beach, Va., Susan King of Marietta, Ga., Dr. G. Andrew Gehrken of Martinsville, Va., Caroline Hauser of Fort Washington, Pa., Anne Weldon Buck of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and her nine grandchildren, Robert Andrew Burgess of Fort Meyers, Fla., Zachary Blaine Stroud of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael Charles King of Marietta, Ga., Emmett Andrew Gehrken, Greer Elaine Gehrken and Dylan Reid Gehrken, all of Martinsville, Va., Leigh Calvert Hauser and Blaine Randolph Hauser of Fort Washington, Pa. and Emily Gordon Buck of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, with Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. Miss Dorothy Gresham, 101, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. She was a native and lifelong resident of Petersburg and was the daughter of the late Samuel R. and Kate Tucker Gresham. Miss Greshman had resided in the Petersburg Home for Ladies for the past 25 years. She graduated from Petersburg High School and attended Harrisonburg Teacher's College, now known as Madison University, and taught second grade at Duncan
Brown School for 30 years. Miss Gresham was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Petersburg. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. Miss Gresham is survived by seven nieces and one nephew, Catherine Hansen, Overland Park, Kan., Gertrude Bradley, Colonial Heights, Va., Martha DuBose, Frederick, Md., Frances Parks, Shawnee, Kan., Charlotte Miller, Tobaccoville, N.C., Barbara Lutz, Weare, N.H., Marilyn Gresham, Farmville, Va. and Julian Gresham Jr. of Colonial Heights, Va. Mary A. Hope, 79, of Richmond, our beautiful Mother and Granny, went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2001. She was the widow of John J. Hope. She is survived by four daughters, Janet Lee Snead, Mary Ann Porter, Kathleen Hope Slater and Beverly Hope Allen; son, John Robert Hope; brother, Johnny Possert; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Johnson Sr., 86, of 4150 Pierce Rd., Powhatan, died October 30, 2001. He was the husband of the late Virginia Odell Murphy Johnson. He retired from Safeway Bakery. Johnson Jr. of Powhatan; one sister, Jessalyn Simpson of Appomattox; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A daughter, June Fuqua, preceded him in death. James Carlton Norwood, 86, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2001. He was the husband of the late Josephine M. Norwood and survived by two daughters, Marsha N. Preston and her husband, Edward and Bonnie Gwaltney and her husband, Jerry; four grandchildren, Jay Gwaltney and Crystal, Jessica and Jason Preston; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Norwood was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and a longtime member of Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. OGLESBY
Earnest Jackson Oglesby Jr., 82, of Richmond, died October 29, 2001. He was born June 2, 1919 in Richmond, the son of the late Earnest Jackson Oglesby and Katherine Geddy Oglesby. Mr. Oglesby was a retired U.S. Army captain and World War II veteran, a member of the 2nd Armored Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received June 11, 1944, off the coast of Normandy, France. Mr. Oglesby was also the last surviving charter member of Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad, which organized in December, 1953. He served as an active member for 27 years and, later, a life member. A 1942 graduate of VMI, Mr. Oglesby was president of All American Insurance Agency, Inc., and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of the Cincinnati. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irmgard Weber Oglesby; two sons, Michael Jackson Oglesby and his wife, Randy, and William Geddy Oglesby and his wife, Marcia; two daughters, Cameron Mathilde Oglesby and Christine Elizabeth Oglesby; four grandchildren, Melanie, Jessica, Pamela and Caroline, all of Richmond; two brothers, Nicholas Perkins Oglesby and his wife, Rosalyn of Greensboro, N.C., and David Berger Oglesby and his wife, Pat of Rolla, Mo.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Oglesby Haugh and her husband, Charles of Charlottesville, Va., and Martha Oglesby Lisle of Kensington, Md. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2001, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 10627 Patterson Ave., where the family will receive friends afterwards. O'KANE
Thomas Francis O'Kane, Sr., 80, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He had recently celebrated his 80th birthday. A long-time resident of Newport News, he was born and raised in Wheeling, W.Va. and attended John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. He was employed for 41 years with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia, serving in Pulaski, Richmond and Newport News. He was particularly proud of his involvement in community programs in Newport News, including serving as director of several substance abuse programs that were sponsored by C&P. He was District Commercial Manager of the Tidewater area when he retired in 1982. He served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in Mindanao in the Philippines. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. His friends and family will remember him as an avid fisherman, hunter, golfer and gardener who was passionate about his pastimes, his family, God and country. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Josie Dean Batchelor O'Kane of Newport News; three sons, Thomas F. O'Kane, Jr. of Punta Gorda, Fla., Timothy M. O'Kane of Charlottesville and Kevin B. O'Kane of Washington, N.C.; his daughter, Mrs. Josie Dean Paul of Carrolton; and nine grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday, November 2, beginning at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by the Reverend Monsignor Michael D. McCarron at noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 100 Harpersville Road, Newport News, followed by interment in Peninsula Memorial Park. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Vaughan Palmore, 85, of Ashland, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Conde Booth Palmore; his children, Russell V. Palmore Jr. of Richmond, Conde P. Hopkins and her husband, Ron, Lelia P. Wehman and her husband, Paul, all of Ashland. He is also survived by a brother, Fred W. Palmore Jr. and his wife, Betty; and grandchildren, Ryan Hopkins and his wife, Elizabeth, Haden Hopkins, Annie Palmore, Jessie Palmore, Ragan Bowman, Peyton Bowman, Brody Wehman, Cara Wehman and Blake Wehman; a sister-in-law, Clifford Booth Pierce; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Palmore was retired from American Hardware Co. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Ashland. He had served as a member of Hanover County's Selective Service Board, the Hanover County School Board and the Ashland Town Council. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and a member of the American Legion. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2001 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Ashland.
