Stafford M. "Buck" Pace
Jan 25, 2003
Stafford M. "Buck" Pace never failed to make his opinion known, whether he was at a Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors meeting or a local high school football game.
"He was just a colorful, dynamic and outspoken person who loved life," said his son, Thomas "Tap" Pace, who coaches football at Fluvanna High School. "At our games, my players in the middle of the field could hear him hollering. He was vocal, that's for sure."
Mr. Pace, a former chairman of the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors, died Friday at his home in Troy. He was 71.
"Buck was Buck and there was no gray with Buck Pace. He had a unique ability to cut to the heart of any matter," said Mel Sheridan Jr., a board member and former chairman. "He could peel an onion to the core quicker than anyone I know."
Mr. Pace was first elected to represent the Palmyra District in 1995 and was reelected in 1999.
He served a year as chairman in 2000 but stepped down from that post for health reasons. He recently stepped down as vice chairman and would have completed his second term in November.
During his tenure, the board approved plans for a 900-megawatt power plant now under construction. The fast-growing county also built new education facilities and a new courthouse.
At the time of his death, Pace was working on a plan to extend public water service to the schools complex and the county seat, Sheridan said.
"He had a vision and he was willing to step up and take on the leadership. He fought cancer like a true champion and I know there were days when he came to meetings directly after chemotherapy treatments. He was a tireless worker."
As a young man out of high school, Mr. Pace turned down a football scholarship in favor of professional baseball and played a season for a Washington Senators farm team.
Mr. Pace was in the insurance business for more than 30 years, retiring as a manager with Monumental Insurance.
He was the widower of Jane Bowman Pace.
Survivors include two sons, Michael S.E. Pace and Thomas "Tap" Pace, both of Palmyra; a daughter, Kathy Pace, of Roanoke; three brothers, D. Wayne Pace, of Charlottesville, Robert W. Pace, of Troy, and R. Stanley Pace Jr., of Hampton; two sisters, Barbara Pace Chambers, of Troy, and Diann Pace Bishop, of Louisa; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Carysbrook Performing Arts Center in Palmyra. Burial will follow in the Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
