Donnie Barker, dead at 57
Lloyd Donald "Donnie" Barker, who organized the music for Martinsville's Oktoberfest for seven years and was founder and owner of the "Sundown Band," died Dec. 3, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was 57.
A Martinsville native, Barker was born July 29, 1948, to Lloyd John Barker and Thelma Thornton Barker, both deceased.
A bass player and drummer since his early teens, he was a supporter of local bands and had served as president of the former Henry County Music Association.
He graduated from National College of Business and Technology, and had been office manager at Automotive Transmission for five years.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Gayle Barker of the home; a stepdaughter, Rhonda Huff Brumfield of Axton; a son, Robert Andrew Barker of Norfolk; two stepsons, Randy Mitchell Huff of Ridgeway and Christopher "Chris" Douglas Harding of Christiansburg; one sister, Shirley Dalton of Stoneville, N.C.; a brother, Johnny Barker of Richmond; a stepgrandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. today at Community Funeral Services chapel in Ridgeway. Charles R. Tomlinson and Kelly Ratcliff will preside. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at Community Funeral Services from 6 p.m. until time for the service today.

John E. Dodson
John Ezra Dodson, 88, of 162 Krontz Drive, Bassett, and formerly of 2398 Oak Level Road, died Monday, Dec. 5, at the Hanson Home in Bassett.
A Henry County native, he was born Aug. 11, 1917, to George Claude Dodson and Ressie Bryant Dodson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Mountcastle Dodson on Mary 11, 2000, and brothers, George A. Dodson and Thaddice Dodson.
He retired from Stanley Furniture Co., and was formerly employed at J.D. Bassett Manufacturing Co. Dodson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bassett.
Surviving are his daughter, Cheryl D. Meadors of Bassett; a brother, Aubrey N. Dodson of Texas; two sisters, Nolie Marie
Carter of Collinsville and Ruby Robertson of Bassett; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Bassett with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
Visitation will be held at the church from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by Collins Funeral Services in Bassett.
Carolyn G. Hartford
The funeral for Carolyn Gwyn Hartford, 102, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 1, 2005, was held Monday at the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville. The Rev. Randall Stevens officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Bill Franck, Reed Moore, Jim Baker, Stan Cobb, A.C. Wilson and Jack Richeson.
Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.
Ellen R. Hylton
The funeral for Ellen Rakes Hylton, 59, of Bassett, who died Dec. 3, 2005, was held Monday at the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. President Archie Shelton and Elders Russell Shockley and Clarence Hodnett officiated. Burial will be at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd.
Pallbearers were Chris Hoff, Charles Sechrist, Russell Shockley, Archie Shelton and Joey Tawney.
Alverta R. Penn
Alverta Mae Reynolds Penn, 65, of 103 Crestwood Court, Martinsville, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was the wife of Frank Penn.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete and will be announced by Hines Funeral Services.
S. Tristen Pilson
Samuel Tristen "Tristan" Pilson, 9, of 77 Pony Ridge Road, Bassett, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
He was the son of Samuel J. "Sammy" Pilson and Shawn P. Pilson.

Mildred S. Robertson
The funeral for Mildred
Smith Robertson, 87, of Taylor Road, Collinsville, who died Dec. 2, 2005, was held Monday at the First Baptist Church of Collinsville with the Rev. Carlton McDaniel officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were David Smith, Jerry Flippin, Ken Flippen, Allen Knott, Michael Robertson, Tommy Robertson and Kal Lawson.
Arrangements were by Norris Funeral Services and Crematory.
Jeffery A. Wallace
Jeffery Allan Wallace, 39, of 710 Joppa Road, Ridgeway, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
A native of La Grange, Ind., he was born Oct. 27, 1966, to Jerry Arthur Wallace of Goshen, Ind., and Mary Alice Crotts Seafert of Bassett.
He was a truck driver for Epes Trucking Co.-GSO.
Surviving in addition to his parents, are his wife, Rebecca Jean Garten Wallace of the home; a son, Jeffrey Ethan Wallace of the home; stepson, Eric Vincent Hale of the home; a sister, Tracy Louise Setliff of Woolwine; brother, Scot Matthew Wallace of Oregon; and his grandmother, Ruth Crotts of Mount Airy, N.C.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Collins Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Dan Schelling and David
Smith officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Services from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.

Dottie Liston dies at 59
Dottie Lou Hager Liston, 59, of 200 Ferndale Drive, Collinsville, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005.
She had been a private duty caregiver for many years and was involved in community fund-raisers for the SPCA, Toys for Tots, Fieldale Community Center, Fieldale Outreach Ministries and Church of God of Prophecy, where she was a member.
She was also a pageant director for many years for Future Miss, America's Eastern Miss, the Young Miss Martinsville and Henry County and Little Miss Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born in Huntington, W.Va., on Sept. 7, 1946, to Hester Mae Adkins Copley and Aaron B. "Pete" Copley. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert James Liston; two brothers, Nevil F. "Babe" Neal and Earl D. "Stormy" Neal; and a daughter, Tammy Lynn.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two daughters, Traci Copley Tomblin of Collinsville and Terri Jo Liston Dionne of Richmond, Ky.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.
