Dr. L. Gregg Halloran
Apr 02, 2002
If you told Dr. L. Gregg Halloran that the sun was out, he would have said, "Well, how do you know that?"
"He made you question it. He made you think about it," recalled Dr. Alvin Zfass, who had worked with Dr. Halloran as a researcher at Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical College of Virginia.
A steady-handed surgeon and a persistent researcher, Dr. Halloran rarely settled for conventional answers. In his work, "it was a view that would either aggravate people or astound them," Zfass said.
Dr. Halloran died at home on Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 64.
Dr. Halloran's unrelenting questions often led to astounding answers, said Dr. Charles Schwartz.
"Gregg was an exceptional, imaginative and brilliant physician [and] researcher," said Schwartz, who also did research with Dr. Halloran before retiring from MCV.
Dr. Halloran's tenacity helped uncover the previously unknown benefits of HDL, sometimes called good cholesterol.
In the 1970s, Dr. Halloran, along with Schwartz and other researchers, discovered that HDL was the body's recycling service.
It helps clean artery walls and transport artery-clogging cholesterol to the liver to become bile.
To further that research, Dr. Halloran left the safety of the lab to travel to the bayous of Louisiana, where he collected bile from alligators freshly killed by professional hunters.
The team's groundbreaking research - alligators and all - remains the basis for modern research and drug development in cholesterol-busting drugs.
"He always challenged conventional wisdom and dogma," Schwartz said.
That willingness to challenge precedent often left Dr. Halloran butting heads with colleagues, recalled Zfass, but it also gave him the incredible strength to come to his own conclusions, even about his own mortality when he learned of his cancer.
"It got him in plenty of trouble . . . But it was a gorgeous piece of his personality," said Zfass, who diagnosed Dr. Halloran more than two years ago. After that diagnosis, he seemed to take the news better than Zfass: "You were just mouth-open at how he handled it."
Born in Beckley, W.Va., Dr. Halloran was a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington.
He received his doctor of medicine degree from MCV in 1964, where he also completed his internship and residency and later received additional training in surgery.
A Navy veteran, he was on the staff at MCV and at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. He was in private practice from 1983 through 1995.
He is survived by two daughters, Beth Halloran and Mary Lynne Staib, both of Richmond; two brothers, Dr. Randolph Halloran of Richmond and Dr. Philip Halloran of Texas; one granddaughter; and his fiancee, Jane Davis.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Burial will be private.
