Lewis Cochran
Lewis Cochran, 81, of Martinsville, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born in Laurel Fork on Sept. 17, 1924, to W.L. Cochran and Fannie Bolt Cochran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June Reynolds Cochran; a sister, Hallie Jean Cochran Donahoo; and three brothers, Eugene Elwood Cochran, Glenn Edward Cochran and William Howard Cochran.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the American Legion. He served in the Army during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service.
Surviving are a daughter, Jenny Lynn Cochran Holmes of Harrisonburg; a twin sister, Fannie Belle Cochran Payne of Martinsville; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. David W. Adkins officiating.
The family will receive friends at 220 Oakdale Street in Martinsville.

Thelma K. Dillon
The funeral for Thelma Koger Dillon, 88, of Bassett, who died Nov. 29, 2005, was held Friday at Bassett Funeral Services. The Revs. Carson
Williams and Daryl B. Martin officiated. Burial was in the Koger family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Steve Nunn, Larry Dillon, Owen Overby, Randy Patterson, Rodney Hatchett and Roger Dillon.
Edda O. France
PETERSBURG -- The funeral for Edda Otis France, 90, of Petersburg and formerly of Martinsville, who died Nov. 28, 2005, was held Saturday at Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. officiating. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Frank Wooten, Dwight Wooten, Shawnon France, Jason France, Bernard
Johnson and Curtis Giles.

Carolyn G. Hartford
Carolyn Gwyn Hartford, 102, of 304 Surrey Court, Martinsville, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Zebulon, Ga., on Oct. 4, 1903, to Charles Redding Gwyn and Bessie Floyd Gwyn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Donald Hartford; a daughter, Anne Hartford Zirkle; and two brothers, Charles Redding Gwyn Jr. and William Floyd Gwyn.
She graduated with honors from Shorter College with a degree in literature and taught high school in Zebulon, Ga. until she married. She was on the board of the Presbyterian Home in Lynchburg and was a member of the founding committee and on the board of the W.C. Ham Center. She also founded and served as president of the Association for Retarded Citizens. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and served as president of the Montgomery Presbytery Women of the Church. She was a member of the Marinsville Garden Club and the Martinsville Literary Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Keesee of Mt. Kisco, N.Y. and Carolyn Vaughn of Winston-Salem, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Randall Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The funeral for William "Bill" Carson Hill, 82, of Fieldale, who died Nov. 30, 2005, was held Saturday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. Pastors Dan Schelling, Bobby Rakes and David Naff officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Bobby Gusler, Robert Watson, John Whitlock, Harold Thompson, Lewis Bond, Howard Kellam, Robert Hamby, Kelvin Wright, and Maynard Spencer.
Franklin D. Howell
VESTA -- The funeral for Franklin Delane "Henry" Howell, 65, of Vesta, who died Dec. 1, 2005, was held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Revs. Shirley Leath and Cecil Wayne
Brown officiating. Burial was in the Hooker family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Howell, Bobby Howell, Paul Robertson, Bubba Hutchens, Tony Stevens and Jimmy Vance.
America M. Hylton
The funeral for America Melinda Martin Hylton, 82, of Spencer, who died Nov. 29, 2005, was held Saturday at Red Hollow Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Joseph Scales and Walter Scales officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Walter Reed Jr., Richard Martin, James Martin, Fred Martin, Orlando Martin and Isaiah Martin.

Ellen R. Hylton
Ellen Rakes Hylton, 59, of 95 Brookshire Lane, Bassett, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Richmond on Sept. 21, 1946, to Thomas Jefferson Rakes and Lucy Mae
Smith Rakes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael C. Coffman.
She was a graduate of Virginia Western Community College and Radford University where she received a degree in Social Services. She was employed by Martinsville and Henry County Social Services. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bassett.
Surviving are two daughters, Tamara H. Hartl of Yoakum, Tex. and Amanda H. Bryant of Floyd; three sons, Timothy Erik Hylton of Bassett, Jeffrey Ian Hylton of Waynesboro and Matthew Ralph Hylton of Woolwine; seven grandchildren; and a special friend, Glenn A. Bowles.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Archie Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the service.

A graveside service for Ernest Lee Kendrick, 87, of Stanleytown, who died Nov. 29, 2005, was held Saturday at Henry Memorial Park with Ministers Donald Kendrick and Tim Cannup officiating.
Pallbearers were Bill Gravley, Bob Sirt, Billy Joe Meadows, Donald Kendrick Jr. Chris Hayzlett, Earl Arther, Pascual Castaneda and Paul Noblett.

Minnie E. Lackey
Minnie Elva Lackey, 92, of Spencer, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Elamsville on Feb. 20, 1913, to John Lackey and Estelle Thomas Lackey. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She worked at Dan River Mills.
Surviving are a sister, Bessie Kuczinski of Spencer; and a brother, Evon R. Lackey of Spencer.
A private funeral service will be held for the family with Daryl B. Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Violet M. McNeely
A graveside service for Violet Marie McNeely, 74, of Martinsville, who died Dec. 1, 2005, was held Friday at Roselawn Burial Park. The Rev. Don Reynolds officiated.
Pallbearers were Ronnie McNeely, Larry McNeely, Gary McNeely, Lynn McNeely and B.L. Ratcliff.
