BRUMBACK
Lacy O'Neal Brumback, widower of Tanner Koiner Brumback and beloved father of Jane Brumback Bachmann, departed this life Saturday, May 25, 2002. Lacy was born in Frederick County, Virginia September 23, 1905, and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech in 1930. He taught vocational agriculture in Augusta County, Virginia before joining Southern States Cooperative in 1936. Lacy retired as Director of Membership Relations from Southern States in 1970. From 1970 to 1980, he served in public relations for Dairymen Incorporated. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Cooperative Council, served as Conference Vice-Chairman of the 40th Session of the American Institute of Cooperation in 1968. He was chairman of the Agricultural and Conservation Committee of the West Richmond Kiwanis Club, a member of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and former president of the Richmond Chapter of the VPI Alumni Association. He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Richmond and served as a member of the Board of Deacons and a member of the Session as Elder. He is survived by a daughter, Jane Brumback Bachmann; son-in-law, Andrew G. Bachmann; two grandsons, Andrew Gregory Bachmann and Brian O'Neal Bachmann; and three great-grandchildren, Sage Laura Bachmann, Connor O'Neal Bachmann and Bryn Virginia Bachmann. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Interment 3:30 p.m Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro, Va. Margaret Ford Chennault, 90, of Richmond, passed away May 24, 2002. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Nick Chennault Jr. of Carlisle, Pa; Carol Gregory of Richmond, Va. and Janice Jackson of Neptune, N.J.; a sister, Melvin Toney of Arvonia, Va.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Robert Cookinham, 60, of Richmond, died Friday, May 24, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Angela; six children, Wendy Sotera, Robert Cookinham Jr., Nykiesha Ryan, Scott Ryan, Shanna and Corey Cookinham; three brothers, Paul Cookinham, William Cookinham, Randolph Cookinham; two sisters, Joy Maribito and Darlene Costa. Wayland Vernon Delano, age 88, of Warsaw, died on Saturday, May 25, 2002. Mr. Delano was a member of Milden Presbyterian Church and a WWII Navy veteran. Frances Taylor Joyner Duckworth, age 80, died Sunday, May 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Jerry Joyner and Wendell Duckworth; her parents and two brothers. Dunn of Williamsburg; her constant loving friend, Ruth Isbell Henley of Short Pump and daughters, Judy and Diane; and long time friend, Roland Westbrook of Richmond. Mary Banks Fretwell, age 97, died at Holly Manor in Farmville on Saturday, May 25, 2002. She was born July 16, 1904 in Norfolk, the daughter of the late George Thomas Banks and Mary Celestial Banks. Mrs. Fretwell graduated from Maury High School, Class of 1924, taught school at Henry Clay, Norfolk. She was a graduate of the State Teacher's College, now Longwood College, member of ZTA, held memberships in both the Junior and Senior Women's Club for a number of years and a longtime member of the Farmville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Fretwell was the widow of James William Fretwell, deceased August 24, 1979. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Anne Fretwell of Farmville, and Beverly Fretwell Sanford of Warsaw; two granddaughters, Mary Beverly Barrett and husband, John Christopher Barrett of Marietta, Georgia, Kathryn F. Fant and husband, John Fant of Marietta, Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Meghan Kathryn Barrett, Sean Christopher Barrett, Holly Marie Barrett, Colin Alexander Fant and Harrison Cordell Fant. Margaret Sowers Horner passed away Sunday, May 26, 2002 at Our Lady of Hope Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Harold Vance Horner; and a son, Harold Bryson Horner who died in 1971. She is survived by her son, Michael Vance Horner; and her grandson, Bryson Horner. Mrs. Horner was a longtime member of Goochland Baptist Church. William Howard "Jesse" James, 93, of Richmond, died May 25, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavinia Floyd James. Mr. James survived his parents, who passed away due to the flu epidemic of 1918, and was one of seven children. He is survived by his sister, Claire James Shearer of Oxford, Alabama; 11 nephews, and five nieces. Mr. James served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was an electrical engineer. He retired from Electric Equipment Company after more than 40 years of service. KEELING
Robert Daniel Keeling, M. D. of South Hill died Saturday, May 25, 2002 in St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. Born in Keysville, Va. to Warren Arthur Keeling and Murray Venable Chick Keeling, he graduated from Keysville Elementary and High Schools. Dr. Keeling received his B.S. degree from Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1943 and his M.D. degree from Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine in 1946. A Navy veteran, he served his intern residency from 1946 to 1947 at Norfolk Naval Hospital, served in the Ophthalmology Department at the Norfolk Naval Air Station and was chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Amphion. He also served resident training at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Dr. Keeling had a family practice in South Hill from 1949 to 1970, became medical director for the Richmond Plants of Reynolds Metals Company, International from 1970 to 1983, was an emergency room physician at the John Randolph Hospital in Hopewell from 1970 to 1984. He also was a medical consultant for Brodnax Mills, Brodnax, Va. and emergency room physician at Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill from 1984 to present. His post graduate studies included the Scott White Medical Clinic in Temple, Texas. and the Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied cardiology, and the University of Maine studying occupational medicine. While in pharmacy school, he was on the Dean's List for four years, a member of the Interfraternity Council, president of Phi Gamma, member and secretary of Sigma Zeta, class president freshman and sophomore years, a member of Sigma Eta Mu, the Mortar and Pestle Club and the American Pharmacy Association. Dr. Keeling is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Quinn Keeling; three daughters, Dorothy Diane Coleman and husband, Dr. James Michael Coleman of Richmond, Gloria Ruth Horne and husband, Richard Briggs Horne of Ashland, Barbara Marie Correll and husband, Steve A. Catherine Zimmermann Kriete, 89, of Richmond, died Friday, May 24, 2002 in Charlottesville. She was born in Richmond to Henry Daniel and Daisy Garthright Zimmermann. She was a graduate of Collegiate School and Mary Baldwin College, and was a member of Crestwood Presbyterian Church and the Woman's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Latimer Kriete Jr., her daughter, Catherine Garthright Kriete, and her nephew, William Kriete. She is survived by her son, Thomas L. Kriete III and his wife, Barbara D. Cecil Lavender, 86, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on May 24, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Thelma; his daughter, Bonnie Langston; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his sister, Nancy Corker; and a host of nieces and nephews. He retired as an officer with the Richmond Police Dept., serving 32 years, with the last 12 as a mounted police officer. He served in the Navy during World War II.
