KVASNICKA
George Phillip Kvasnicka, 68, of Church Road, widower of Virginia M. Kvasnicka, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Prince George and was the son of the late Charles J. and Anna Kump Kvasnicka. After graduating from Disputanta High School in 1951, he attended auto diesel school in Florida and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 33 years of service. He is survived by four children, George P. Kvasnicka II of Chester, Patricia Loop of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Andrew Kvasnicka of Prince George and Martha Thompson of Colonial Heights; seven grandchildren, George III, Nicole, Kaitlynn, Hannah, Alex, Megan and Bain; and a sister, Dorothy Brockwell of Prince George. A wake will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends afterwards until 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, New Bohemia, will be announced later.

MULL
James Emile Mull, 88, of Chase City, died July 27, 2002. He was predeceased by his father, O.H. Mull Sr.; mother, Mary Stacy Mull; and his son, J.E. Mull Jr. In his younger years he was a Philco dealer and founded Jemco Building Supplies. He built the Chase City Airport and was an avid aviator. He retired in 1976. He and his wife traveled the 48 contiguous states in his beloved motor home and visited Hawaii. He was a devout Christian who loved giving to others. Much of his time was devoted to the church, Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club and his "Red Book". He was Chase City's Citizen of the Year in 1995. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Iola C. Mull; his daughter, Jo Anne W. Andrews of Chase City; his sons, Ricky Mull of Red Oak, Ron Mull of Longwood, Fla.; and a brother, Richard Mull of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; three grandsons, and two granddaughters. The family will receive friends Monday, July 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Davis Funeral Home. OWINGS
Alfred J. “Jerry” Owings, 64, of Richmond, departed this life at his home on Friday, July 26, 2002. Mr. Owings, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in 1959, and the T.C.
Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1965, was a Partner in the Henrico County Law Firm of Spinella, Owings and Shaia, P.C. He had also been active in a number of community organizations having served as president of the West End Catholic Men's Association, Catholic Charities of Richmond, and the Notre Dame Club of Richmond, and as an officer of the Knights of Columbus Council #395. Additionally, Mr. Owings had served on the Henrico County Republican Committee, as Secretary of the Goochland County Republican Committee, and in 1969, was a candidate for a floater seat in the House of Delegates. Mr. Owings was also active at Benedictine High School, where he graduated in 1955. He served two terms there as president of the PTSO, chaired the Benedictine Capital City Classic for two consecutive years, and served as member of the Board of Trustees. Most importantly, Mr. Owings was a devoted husband, father, little league coach, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons, John and David; brother, Walter; and sisters, Marcia McGuire and Susan Jacobi. Mr. Owings' remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Rosary will be held 5:30 p.m. Sunday, with visitation to follow from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 Noon Monday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church. PALMER
Julia Sanders Palmer, 72, of Midlothian, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. She is survived by her sister, Mary Sue Parvin; a niece, Annalee Finch; a nephew and his wife, Cordell and Nancy Parvin; and a great-niece, Jill Parvin. Miss Palmer was an active member in Salisbury Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, elder, and Stephen's Minister. She was a 1951 graduate of Radford College, where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She taught elementary school in Illinois for 34 years, until her retirement in 1985. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at Salisbury Presbyterian Church. Interment private. Clyde Raney Phillips, age 84, of Lawrenceville, died July 26, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Lelia Louise Phillips; a son, Jerry W. Phillips of Lawrenceville; and two grandchildren; four sisters, Elizabeth Seymour of Lawrenceville, Margaret Bradley of Emporia, Doris Clarke of Triplet, and Peggy Byers of Emporia; and a brother, V.J. REDDEN
C. Wallace Redden, 79, of Salisbury, Md., died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Hickman County, Tennessee, he was a son of the late John M. Redden and Mattie Bruce Redden. Mr. Redden is survived by a son, Charles W. Redden Sr. of Richmond; three grandchildren, Amy, Brandy and Charles Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary Evelyn Redden; one brother and five sisters. In addition he leaves to mourn Robert and Sidne Thomas, his loving and devoted adopted family with whom he resided. Cremation followed his death. Services will be held at a later date. Dr. John Thomas Rogers, 83, a retired dentist of Charlotte, N.C., died peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 14, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Ferris Hollingsworth Rogers, formerly of Unadilla, Ga. His relatives in Richmond are his daughter, Penny and her husband, Edward M. Navis; grandson, Eric A. Navis; granddaughters, Laura and husband, Scott Turner, Jennifer and husband, Dave Carmean, Carla and husband, Chris Whelan of Cleveland, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Jake Turner and Summer Whelan. His grandson, Roger E. Navis, preceded him in death. Dr. Rogers was born in Durham, N.C. His 40-year-old dental practice was in Charlotte, N.C., where he continued to live in retirement.

The Reverend Samuel A. Scott of 1709 Joycelyn Court, Glen Allen, Va., entered into his eternal home on July 25, 2002. He will be profoundly missed by his loving family, wife of 46 years, Zenobia; son, Glen A. and his wife, Roxana; daughter, Letra Scott-Dennis and her husband, Vaughn; five grandchildren, who were his particular pride, Kelly Dennis, Samuel, Kendall, Aminta and Lauryn Scott; brothers, James A. STEVENSON
Dr. Edward Carl Stevenson, 95, of Charlottesville, died on July 23, 2002. Dr. Stevenson, a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at the University of Virginia, grew up in Richmond, Virginia, before attending the University of Virginia, where he earned a B.S.E. (Chemistry) in 1928, an M.S. (Physics) in 1929 and a Ph.D. (Physics) in 1931. After graduation, he taught at Harvard University and the U.S. Navy Post-Graduate School at the U.S. Naval Academy before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 1950 as Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering. He retired in 1973. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy, earning a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement while working on the atomic bomb project in July and August of 1945. While at the University of Virginia, he was recognized for his many contributions by, among other honors, being elected to ODK (honorary leadership fraternity) and The Raven Society. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and served on several national committees, including the Army Scientific Advisory Panel. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Priddy Stevenson. He is survived by his sister, Mary Stevenson Peple and her husband, Dr. Edward C. Peple of Richmond; a first cousin, Edith M. Shelburne and her husband, C. Daniel Shelburne of Southern Pines, N.C.; and five nephews, Dr. Edward C. Peple, Jr., of Midlothian, Va., Stephen G. Peple of Richmond, S. Vernon Priddy III of Richmond; John W. Field Jr. of Virginia Beach and Eugene F. Field of Norfolk. Other survivors include Dr. John D. Shelburne of Durham, N.C., Edward M. Shelburne of Whiteville, N.C., Dr. Thomas M. Shelburne of Elkin, N.C.; and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces. Burial arrangements are private.

YEATTS
Archer L. Yeatts Jr., long-time educator and State Government official, died on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the age of 82. He was a native of Pittsylvania County and grew up on a farm outside of Chatham. Mr. Yeatts graduated from the County schools and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Agricultural Education. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Mr. Yeatts was an Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Virginia T. Ford Yeatts; a son, Judge Archer L. Yeatts III and wife, Elaine of Richmond; a daughter, Kathryn (Kitty) Y. Davis and husband, George of Richmond; three grandchildren, Carole E. Yeatts of Richmond, Laura Y. Thomson of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and Philip S. Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Ann Y. Pulliam of Louisville, Ky.; two stepsons, Henry R. Ford Jr. of Richmond, and Charles R. Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Elinor Moore Yeatts in 1997. Beginning his career as an educator, Mr. Yeatts taught Vocational Agriculture in Pittsylvania County, and served as a teacher-supervisor in a five county area in Southside, Virginia. After receiving his Masters Degree, he taught for two years at VPI. He joined the State Department of Education in 1958 as Assistant Supervisor of Agricultural Education. Mr. Yeatts later served as Assistant Commissioner of Agriculture for three years, and then was appointed an Executive Assistant to Governor Mills Godwin in 1966. In 1969, Governor Godwin appointed him to the ABC Board, where he served until retirement in 1983. While Chairman of the ABC Board in 1976, he served as President of the National Association of Alcoholic Beverage Control Officials. Following retirement, he served two 4-year terms on the Richmond Metropolitan Authority and two terms as a member of the State Board of Corrections. Mr. Yeatts was active in his church and the Masonic fraternity. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church for 40 years, serving as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. Since 1998, he had been a member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He was a 50 year and a 33rd degree Mason and was Past Master of Manchester Lodge No. 14, AF&AM. He also held membership in Varina Lodge No. 272, and Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24; Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, serving as Venerable Master in 1985 and a member of the Scottish Rite Guard; and ACCA Temple Shrine. He was a member and Past Director of Richmond Court No. 16, Royal Order of Jesters and Past President of the Past Masters' Club. Mr. Yeatts was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Masonic Home of Virginia in 1978. He was elected President of the Board two years later and served until 1990, a period during which the Home experienced its greatest expansion. He had resided in the Masonic Village since 1996. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 29, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A Masonic memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 3:30 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 4200 Dover Rd., with a reception afterwards. Dorothy "Dot" Cummins Adams of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 18, 2001 after a long illness at the age of 77. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Mr. John E. Adams; children, Ellen A. Nicholls and her husband, Carlton, Donna A. Stables and her husband, Ed, and David W. Adams and his wife, CeCe; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Ellen C. Parolari of Natural Bridge, Va. Mrs. Adams was a former member of Weatherford Baptist Church and a charter member of New Vision Baptist Church. She was a member of the Richmond A.S.A. Softball Hall of Fame and a Stanley Home Products Dealer for over 30 years. Dot always put the Lord first and her door was always open to family and friends. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park.
