McCONNELL
Phyllis Broughton Tall McConnell, of Brandermill Woods, Chesterfield, Va., died on July 11, 2001. Mrs. McConnell was born on May 21, 1916 in Baltimore, Md., the daughter of the late Stanley Broughton and Dorothy Cochran Tall. She was also predeceased by her sister, Marjolaine T. Allen; and her loving husband of 58 years, William Sydney McConnell. A 1939 graduate of the College of William and Mary, Mrs. McConnell remained an active member of Kappa Delta sorority. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and was active in the parishes she attended. Mrs. McConnell was also active in community and charitable affairs. She is survived by daughter, Susan B. Stanko and Larry E. Gawell; and grandsons, Edward M. Stanko III and Kent W. Stanko of Cleveland, Ohio. Also, Mrs. McConnell is survived by daughter, Nancy M. Williams; her son-in-law, Donald C. Williams; and grandsons, Thaddeus B.

Williams of Chesterfield, Va. Mrs. McConnell also leaves her dearest friend, Mrs. Bettie-Ann Hackett; and many other friends in Baltimore, Cleveland and Cape Cod. A memorial service will be held at St. Matthias' Church at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14. Samuel W. McKenney, 70, of Highland Springs, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Margaret J. McKenney; his children, Sharon Edwards and her husband, Bruce, David Wayne McKinney and his wife, Leslie, Samuel Wayne McKenney and Jason Elliott McKenney; three grandchildren, Christopher, Stacy and Michelle. Mr. McKenney was a member of the Sandston Moose Lodge. His remains rest at the Nelsen Fuenral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Thelma M. "Nannie" Mills, 79, of Ruther Glen, died July 11, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Carrie M. Spencer and her husband, Thad Spencer and Mary B. Lockhart and her husband, Raymond D. Lockhart; two brothers, Melvin Davis of Goochland and Ruben Davis of Chesapeake; three sisters, Ruth Luck of Beaverdam, Betty West of Ashland and Berta May Profitt of Bumpass; 10 grandchildren, Lloyd Donathan, James Braswell, Nelson Braswell, Cindy Hayes, Mel Lockart, Tina Broaddus, Michael Lockhart, Janet Kois, Chip Lockhart and April Null; 20 great-grandchildren. Dorothy Dunn Moore, 73, of Richmond, died July 11, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Temple Moore Sr.; sons, Joseph Temple Moore Jr. and Douglas Lee Moore and wife, Delinda Lea Moore; daughter, Susan Moore Wilson and husband, Donald Malton Wilson; daughter, Deborah Lynn Moore; four grandchildren, Austin Douglas Moore, Joseph Grayson Moore, David Wesley Moore and Daniel Christian Moore; and her sisters, Helen Dunn Puryear and Laura Dunn Williams; and a special friend, Ella Crockett; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was a member of Bethany Place Baptist Church for many years. William R. Neddo, 53, of Burgess, died Wednesday July 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Neddo; one son, Will Neddo; and one brother, James Neddo, both of Hopewell; and four grandchildren. Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. in the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
NORDGREN
Tyler James Nordgren, age 6, died on July 10, 2001 at Roanoke Community Hospital as a result of a sudden brain hemorrhage. Tyler was born September 4, 1994 at Roanoke Community Hospital into the family of Richard Eric and Cheryl Vaught Nordgren. Tyler was to be in the second grade at Greenfield Elementary School. He participated on the TDAC Tigers T-ball team and was a member of the Read Mountain Muskies Swim Team. Tyler was also an avid Pokemon card collector, a passionate reader of science books, and a master of board games. Tyler is survived by his sisters, Alison and Erica, who reside at home and Sarah Kelsey of Harrisonburg, Virginia; grandparents, Eric and Elizabeth Nordgren of Durham, New Hampshire; uncle, William Nordgren of San Diego, California; aunt and uncle, Victoria Nordgren and Frank Hawrylak of Manhattan, New York; aunt, Karen Vaught McKinney of Washington, D.C.; aunt, Marcia Vaught Borton and cousins, Christopher and Paige Borton of Midlothian, Virginia. Tyler was preceded in death by a grandfather, James A. Vaught of Crawfordsville, Indiana; grandparents, Marjorie J. and Robert E.
Smith of Largo, Florida; and cousin, Scott McKinney of Crawfordsville, Indiana. The family asks that friends join them on Friday, July 13, 2001 at 7 p.m. for a brief memorial service at the Daleville Church of the Brethren. Following the service there will be an informal gathering to share memories and celebrate life. Helen L. Palmer, 70, of Lancaster, died Monday, July 9, 2001. She is survived by her husband, John G. Palmer; her daughter, Dr. Helen T. Palmer of Coralville, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, six nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Mrs. Palmer retired from teaching approximately 25 years ago and had been an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lancaster. Andrew T. Schools, 84, of Warsaw, died Thursday, July 12, 2001. Survivors are his wife, Helen V. Schools; two sons, Rev. Fred Neale Schools and Dewey D. Schools; three daughters, Ann S. Burgess, Nancy R. Ripley and Andrea L. Skelton; sister, Ada Belle Brooks; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Smith was raised in Albemarle County, Va. She was a graduate of the Martha Washington Hospital School of Nursing in Charlottesville, Va. While working at Children's Hospital in Richmond, she met Dr. Leroy Smith, whom she later married. The couple settled in Richmond. Dr.
Smith passed away in December of 1993. Mrs.
Smith was very active in the First Baptist Church of Richmond, where she was a member of the Gill Sunday School class and Women on Mission. She also served on the Board of the Retreat Hospital. Barbara Towner Spann passed away peacefully at 6 p.m. Wednesday July 11, 2001, at age 71, after a number of years living valiantly with Parkinsons Disease. Wife to Edwin R. Spann, she is survived by her three children, David Spann, Glenn Spann, and Sarah Spann Saunders. She died at home, surrounded by friends and family. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. George Howard Vermilyea, 83, of Richmond, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Vermilyea; his children, Patty Day, Diane Orben, Dennis, Don, and Kenny Vermilyea, Mary Ann Miller; his grandchildren, Christina, Stephen, Charles and Matthew Orben, Ashley Miller, Jonathan Day, and Kevin Vermilyea; a brother, John Vermilyea; and a sister, Naomi Sherman. Mr. Vermilyea was a retired U.S. Army veteran, having served in both WWII and Korea. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. His family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Virginia Werner Watson, age 84, of Richmond, passed away July 11, 2001. She was the widow of Russell L. Watson Sr. and was preceded in death by a son, Russell L. Watson Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Beverley W. Slaughter and Margaret W. Beasley, both of Richmond; her brother, Mr. Randolph W. Werner Sr. of Mechanicsville; and her sister, Mrs. Doris W. Coor, of Richmond; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Watson was a member of Laurel Presbyterian Church for over sixty years. Mary Morris Watt died Tuesday, July 10, 2001. She was the daughter of the late George Wythe Watt and Mary Clopton Watt. Miss Watt was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church, graduated from Collegiate School and Hollins College and worked for over 40 years as librarian for Richmond Newspapers. She is survived by several cousins.
