A. Lee Robbins, 87, of Sandston, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie D. Robbins. He is survived by two daughters, Betty Sue Alexander and Betty Sue Robbins; three sons, Ralph Robbins, Charles Robbins, and Wayne Robbins; a devoted son-in-law, Joe Alexander; six brothers and one sister; several grandchildren. Mr. Robbins was a master carpenter and a teacher of many. He taught several young people the trade and worked for several companies in Richmond, two of which were Penley and Robbins Company and the Enterprise Construction Company. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.
ROSANELLI
Laurie Vail Rosanelli of Richmond died Tuesday, September 18, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Lynley Rosanelli Cavanaugh of Richmond and Stephanie Meredith Rosanelli of Malibu, Calif.; her mother, Frances Cross Vail of Richmond; her sister, Nancy Helen Vail of Richmond; her granddaughter, Blair Neil Cavanaugh of Richmond; and many loving friends. She attended Westhampton College. She was a member of the Virginia Women's Club, past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, member of Children of the Confederacy, and the owner of Vail Estate Sales. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where services will be held 10 a.m. Friday. Departed this life September 16, 2001, Mr. Anthony J. Scott of Richmond. SHUMATE
Lelia Sanford Shumate, 87, of Orange, Va., died Tuesday, September 18, 2001. She was born June 8, 1914 in Orange, the daughter of the late Wallace Walker Sanford and Ada Woodriff Sanford. Mrs. Shumate graduated from Longwood College in 1936, and taught school in Franklin and in Warwick, Va. After returning to Orange, she was a long-time employee of the Orange County Public Library and the Bookmobile Program. Mrs. Shumate was also an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Billy" Louis Shumate Jr.; and her son, Sanford Selden Shumate; two brothers, Laurence "Beef" Sanford and Wallace W. "Monk" Sanford Jr.; three sisters, Phyllis S. Hundley, Ada S. DeJarnette and Betty S. Witherow. Mrs. Shumate is survived by two sons, William Louis "Mo" Shumate III of Richmond and John Woodriff Shumate of Barboursville; a twin sister, Florence S. Lyne of Orange; a brother, Jack W. Sanford of Charlottesville; a grandson, great-grandson, and 16 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Orange at 11 a.m. Friday, September 21, 2001. Alice T. Wray died Tuesday, September 18, 2001 in Chippenham Medical Center, Richmond. The daughter of the late Charles W. Taylor and Lucy Simmons Taylor, she lived in Chesterfield County. She is survived by her husband, Andrew E. Wray; three daughters, Cheryl O'Berry and husband, Patrick, Christy Suyes and husband, Douglas and Carmen Tally and husband, Richard; five grandchildren, A.J. and Billy O'Berry, Rebecca and Heather Suyes and Drew Tally; five sisters, Elizabeth Hines, Maria Myrick, Essie Bickings, Bessie Reynolds and Joan Hall; a brother, John W. Taylor; special niece, Gertrude B. Ford and several others nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Thomas Taylor and sisters, Virginia Voelker, Martha Barger and twin sister Alva Webster. David E. Zimmermann, 82, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mary B. Zimmermann, two daughters, Katherine Gerritz and her husband, Daniel, Marcia Strange and her husband, James; six grandchildren, David, Scott and Graham Gerritz, Leslie, Katherine and Spencer Strange. Mr. Zimmermann was a veteran of World War II, an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a retired insurance agent, and an active member of his community through service in the Sertoma and Lions Clubs. Margaret Wilson (Peggy) Allen, 74, of Glen Allen, died Friday, May 3, 2002. She was the widow of Bernard Allen. She is survived by three sons, Charlie B. Allen and his wife, Janet, Stephen and Richard Allen; two daughters, Page Robinson and her husband, Charlie and Mary Lynne Hebert and her husband, Raoul; two brothers, Hugh and Horace (Dick) Wilson; two sisters, Norma Sprenkle and Jane Earley; eight grandchildren, Jason, Katie, Megan, Charlie, Ashley, Shawn, Justin and Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Eron and Cameron. Wilbur Ross Bendle, 74, of Varina, died Friday, May 3, 2002. Survivors include his beloved wife of 46 years, Geraldine Arnell Bendle. Also his five children, Lewis, Judy, Wayne, David and Paul; and his nine grandchildren. He retired from Greyhound Bus after 32 years of service. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 233. Charles Allen (Chuck, Jack) Brizendine, 81, of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 4, 2002. He was born in Roanoke on April 24, 1921, to the late Sydnor
Wells and Eula Allen Brizendine. Prior to serving four years in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended the College of William and Mary. He was a former Virginia State Trooper and retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company after many years of service as an agent, staff manager and manager. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Allen Brizendine Tibbs; sisters, Louise B. Simmons and Cathryn B. Ayers; brother, Sydnor W. Brizendine Jr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Georgie Freeman Brizendine; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret B. and Horace B. Thomas; granddaughter, Seddon Yorke Thomas of Boston, Mass.; grandsons, Horace Bass Thomas Jr. and wife, Jeni of Cincinnati, Ohio, Charles Andrew Thomas of Harrisonburg, as well as several nieces and nephews.
