MILLER
Robert C. Miller, 85, of Richmond, died November 7, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane R. Miller. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jim Landmann; and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Miller of Blacksburg; sister, Marge Sorenson of California; grandsons, Scott and Ryan Landmann; and beloved friend, Iris Thacker. Mr. Miller was retired from E.I. du Pont with 30 years of service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Services will be private. NEWMAN
Mr. Alfred Haskins "Hack" Newman Sr., 86, husband of Virginia Webb Newman, died Thursday morning, November 8, 2001 at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond. Mr. Newman was a Mecklenburg Co. native and graduated from Buckhorn High School, Class of 1934. He proudly volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army, August of 1942. He was a tail gunner on a B24 bomber and was discharged from the military November 1945. Shortly after completing high school, he began working with his uncle, J. E. Bing, owner of Bing Hardware and Bing Funeral Home. He later inherited the businesses from his uncle and continued in business until his retirement in 1992. In January 1982, he decided to close Bing Funeral Home and when asked why, his response was, "I've grown tired of burying my friends". His work required long hours and a six day work week. He was a member of Boydton United Methodist Church and also served on the Boydton Town Council for 16 years. He was a man of splendid behavior. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Betty N. Lea of Danville; two sons, Alfred "Al" H. Newman Jr. of Boydton and William P. Newman of High Point, N.C. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Virginia L. Riddle, Sally L. Burton, Ivey N. Blunt and William P. Newman Jr.; a great-grandchild, Jaiden Blunt; a sister, Virginia N. Elam of South Hill. Graveside funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, November 10 in the Boydton Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends will be received at the residence. Dessie Lee Parker, age 85, of King William, widow of W. Henley Parker, died November 8, 2001. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth Crawford Parker and William Henley (Buddy) Parker Jr. and wife, Laurie; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, William and Wesley Parker; two brothers, Richard and Robert Skelton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia Phaup Pearson Rountree passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2001. She was born April 15, 1912, the daughter of the late Arthelius and Mary Horner Phaup of Chesterfield Co., Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Etheldred W. Pearson; an infant son, William M. Pearson; and by her second husband, Shirley D. Rountree. Virginia had been an active member of Monument Heights Baptist Church, The Eastern Star Chapter 11, The Scottish Rite Woman's Club, the Christian Woman's Club and the National Federated Craft Chapter 60. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Jane W. Pearson; her granddaughters and their spouses, Mary-Stuart and Kevin Gremer, Katherine and MacGregor Gould; and a great-granddaughter, Jane Carlton Gremer. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 9 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Portsmouth, Va. Spc. LaTonya Michelle Phillips, U.S. Army, of Richmond, Va., departed this life on Thursday, November 1, 2001 in Yongson, Korea. She is survived by her mother, Brenda Brown; her stepfather, Earl O. Willie Edward Poole, 86, of Point of Rocks Rd., Chester, died November 7, 2001 in John Randolph Nursing Home. He was born in Halifax County, Va. and had lived in the Chester area for 56 years. Mr. Poole was a retired electrician for Hercules Inc., a past president of United Mine Workers, Local #13061, a member of the Woodmen of the World, life member of Enon Optimist Club, a member and former Deacon of the Enon Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James Washington and Missouri Susan Griffin Poole. Surviving are his wife, Lora McCowan Poole of Chester; three daughters, Willie Jo Elmore and husband, Maurice of Newport News, Sandra P. Survello and husband, Paul of Chester, Susan K.

Drewry Benjamin Pride, 90, of Chesterfield, died Monday, November 5, 2001 at Lucy Corr Village in Chesterfield. He was the son of the late Walter Drewry and Hester Dance Pride, and was the widower of Mildred
Jones Pride. He was a retired purchasing agent for E.I. DuPont and was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. Charles Chris Stoen of Richmond died Monday, November 5, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine Viele Stoen; daughter, Diana Stoen of San Francisco, Calif.; son, Eric Stoen of Richmond; sister, Grace Stoen Benjamin of Melbourne, Fla.; her husband, Joseph K. Benjamin; and their son, Joseph E.S. Benjamin. He is also survived by a beloved aunt, Clarice Stoen Yttreness of Sioux Falls, S.D.; many relatives and friends. His parents were Royal S. Stoen and Lucille Cummins Stoen of Richmond, Va. Mr. Stoen was employed by Ruffin and Payne, Inc. He was an elder for Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Marvin E. Weeks died Wednesday, November 7, 2001. He would have celebrated his 86th birthday on November 14. Mr. Weeks was the loving husband of the late Nellie S. Weeks and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marvine Mae and Barry Michael; nieces, Lillian Jewel, Lillie Mae Morrison, Helen Taylor and Joan Regali; nephews, Richie Jewel, Clinton Taylor, Freddie Blount, Eddie Blount and Frank Regali. Mr. Weeks served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a streetcar and bus driver with Virginia Transit Company in the 1930's and 1940's, a truck driver with American Oil Company in the 1950's and 1960's and a carpenter with the Commonwealth of Virginia in the 1970's. He lived with his daughter and son-in-law for the past 11 years. Mrs. Nettie Evelyn Kinker Wilkerson, 87, died Thursday, November 8, 2001. She was the daughter of the late John Nance Kinker and Adelia Frances Ellis Kinker Testerman. She was the widow of Robert Lee Wilkerson and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Glorious W. Shepherd. She is survived by two daughters, Florence "Kitty" Munford (Cassie) and Edith W.
