GORDON
Mrs. Meade Harrup Gordon, 87, of Jarratt, widow of Thomas N. Gordon, died Saturday, December 22, 2001. She is survived by three sons, Samuel T. Gordon and Beverly "Billy" Gordon, both of Jarratt and Phillip "Buck" Gordon of Emporia; four daughters, Irene G. Allen, Lois G. Moore and Loraine Phillips, all of Emporia and Paulette Flowers of Drewryville; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by two sons, Randy Gordon and Thomas N. "Pete" Gordon Jr.; and one daughter, Charlotte Keesee. Thomas M. Gray went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2001. He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony R. Gray. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife of 65 years, Annie Slayton Gray; three daughters, Veronica (Frederick) Archer, Alma Gray and Angela Gray; five sons, Thomas Jr. (Marietta), Vincent, Michael, Lynwood (Susan) and Mark (Gwen); 19 grandchildren,; 23 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Beatrice Proctor, Catherine Gray, Regina Washington, Ruth Swann, Adelaide Datcher and Virginia Brockington; four brothers-in-law, Thomas Slayton, Thomas Wren, Richard Washington and Charles Datcher; adopted family, Berhane and Hanna Desta and Joan Harper; lots of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, December 26 at 12 noon at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 2nd Avenue and Victor Streets, where remains will lie in state one hour prior funeral time. Gladys Fitts Harrell, 76, of DeWitt died Saturday, December 22, 2001 in John Randolph Medical Center. She was born in Granville Co., N.C. and was the daughter of the late John Clifford Lee Fitts and Emma Lillian Lloyd Fitts. She is survived by her husband, James A. Harrell; son, E. Wayne Harrell of Orange Co., Va.; daughter, Anita Harrell Bourlier of Prince George; three grandchildren, Shannon D. Harrell, Wendi H. Hughes and Jonathan P. Bourlier; great-grandson, Dylan H. Hughes; five brothers, Johnny Fitts of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Oscar Fitts and Joseph J. Fitts, both of Dahlgren, Va., C. Wayne Fitts and Russell L. (Red) Fitts, both of Dinwiddie; and six sisters, Bernice Sprouse of Richmond, Margie Emerson of Chester, Shirley Willard of Richmond, Louise F. Gray of Manteo, N.C., Alice F. Virginia Broach Harrison, 87, of Richmond, widow of Samuel C. Harrison Sr., died Saturday, December 22, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Betty H. Buchanan of Richmond and Sandra H. Lumpkin and her husband, Wayne of Mechanicsville; one son, Samuel C. Harrison Jr. and his wife, Jane of Mechanicsville; one sister, Margaret B. Fulks; one brother, Samuel G. Artie Lee Lindsay, 83, of Richmond, passed away December 22, 2001. He was the widower of Mary Wagstaff Lindsay. He is survived by his sons, James W. Lindsay and his wife, Carol and Freddie L. Lindsay. Mr. Lindsay served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday (today) at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. Frances Fox Miller, 71, of Richmond, passed away on December 22, 2001. She was the widow of Charles Edward Miller Sr. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Miller Green, Diane Miller Maynard, Nancy Miller Joseph and Lisa Ann Miller; sons, Charles Edward Miller Jr. and Harry Clarence Miller; brother, Freeman C. Fox; a special granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Benson; 13 other grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. MINOR
Betty Throckmorton Poole Minor, 59, of Chester, Va., passed away Saturday, December 22, 2001. She was the widow of Charles Poole and Michael Minor; and was predeceased by her father, D. Elmo Throckmorton. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Poole and Susan P. Danforth, both of Fairfax, Va.; her mother, Fannie G. Throckmorton of Richmond; and her brother, Dennis Ray Throckmorton of Richmond; also two nephews of Richmond. Betty was a former member of Varina Woman's Club and has been vice president and president of the Chester Woman's Club. She was a lifelong member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church. Betty worked for Donel Enterprises for 20 years and was owner of Kwik Copy of Colonial Heights. In October 1998, she was diagnosed with cancer and was active in a support group as much as possible. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 27. NEWELL
Samuel William Newell, 84, died December 22, 2001. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi and lived later in Dallas, Texas and Altanta, Ga. He held degrees from Davidson College, Emory University and Union Theological Seminary. He was awarded honorary degrees by Davidson College and the University of Montpelier, Montpelier, France. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Daniel Newell; and three daughters, Pattie Newell
Williams and husband, Mason M. Williams, M.D., Scott Newell Slater and husband, Thomas G. Slater Jr. and Margaret Newell Gottwald and husband, John D. Gottwald; one brother, C. Morris Newell of Charlotte, N.C.; and nine grandchildren, Carrington, Taylor and Mary Mason Williams, Molly Brent Revere, Mason Brent Jr., Sam, James, Chase and Addie Gottwald. He held pastorates in Mullins, S.C., Davidson, N.C. and Richmond, Va. where he was the Pastor of River Road Presbyterian Church from 1961 to 1976, and Salisbury Presbyterian Church from 1976 to 1981. He was honorably retired by the Hanover Presbytery in 1982. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the Army Intelligence Corps. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served as Moderator of the Hanover Presbytery, a member of the Board of World Missions, Presbyterian Church USA, member of Governing Board of Church World Services, Recording Secretary of World Alliance of Reformed Churches, Trustee of Hanover Presbytery, Member Board of Trustees Collegiate Schools, Member of Board of Trustees of Westminister-Canterbury, Life member Davidson College Board of Visitors, Trustee of Union Theological Seminary. He was a much beloved minister but above all a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 27, at 11 a.m., River Road Presbyterian Church. Elise (Crone) Padrone, 87, of Richmond, died Saturday morning, December 22, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born July 29, 1914 in Springhill, Virginia, a daughter of the late James William Crone and Anna Bliss (Hahn) Crone. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Richmond. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Tuckahoe Lodge, Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Padrone; her daughter, Patricia Long; her brothers, Linwood and J.W. Crone; and her sister, Rebecca Crone. Surviving are two sons, Sam Padrone and his wife, Jackie of Richmond, James Lotts and his wife, Nancy of Louisa County; her brothers, Richard Crone of Staunton, Harry Crone of Endicott, N.Y.; her sisters, Gladys Crone of Staunton, Charlotte Harlow of Houston, Texas, Melissa Waters of Arlington, Va.; six grandchildren, Debbie, Mike, Mark, Theresa, Gina and Savino; three great-grandchildren; her son-in-law, Ed Long of Tampa, Florida; her sister-in-law, Jo Crone of Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held 12 noon today in the chapel of Hamrick Funeral Home conducted by Father John A. Abe. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery. ANDERSON
Margaret Wilkinson Anderson, age 90, of Regent's Point, Irvine, Calif., died Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the Irvine Medical Center after a brief illness. Margaret Wilkinson was born February 1, 1912 in La Crosse, Va., the daughter and only child of Thomas Meredith Wilkinson and Clyde Swift Wilkinson. On December 28, 1943 she married Frank Anderson, who died in the early 1970's. At the time of his death they were living in Santa Monica, Calif. Mrs. Anderson moved to a retirement community, Regent's Point, in 1989. She is survived by many first cousins. There will be a memorial service later in Regent's Point. Tyrone M. Anderson of Richmond, Va., formerly of Louisa, Va., died on Sunday, September 22, 2002 at his home. He is survived by his mother, Lillie Anderson and brother, James Anderson, both of Mineral; three sisters, Grace Brooks and Wilhelmena Pinner, both of New York and Edna Hackney of Mineral; and other relatives.
