Frances Margiotta Hughes went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 15, 2002. She was the widow of Kelly Harris Hughes Sr., who helped build the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, and daughter of the late Donato and Teresa Margiotta. She is survived by her children, Marlene Hughes
Smith and her husband, George of Richmond, Christine Hughes and her son, Phillip of Richmond and Kelly Harris Hughes Jr., his wife, Lynne and their children, Evan and Jamie of Rockville; two sisters, Philomena Margiotta Bryant and her husband, Julian of Richmond, Teresa Margiotta Bradshaw and her husband, Elijah Norfleet "Boots" Bradshaw of Norfolk; one brother, Daniel Joseph Margiotta and his wife, Merda of Great Bridge, Va.; also 15 nieces and nephews, and many loving friends. Mrs. Hughes was retired from the Medical College of Virginia and was a longstanding volunteer with Henrico Doctors Hospital. Frances Marie Nelms Johnson, age 83, of High Point, N.C., and formerly of Hopewell, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at High Point Regional Medical Center. Mrs.
Johnson was born March 4, 1918 in Windsor, Va., the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Bettie Turner Nelms and was the widow of Gilbert L. Johnson, who was killed in WWII. Marie was a member of the West Chester Baptist Church, High Point, N.C. Mrs.
Johnson is survived by her daughter, Jill M. Harwood of Jamestown, N.C.; two grandchildren; James M. Harwood of Pimbrook Pines, Fla., and Joy M. Harwood of Plantation, Fla.; one sister, Mattie Sarah Brough of Hopewell, Va.; and many adopted grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a host of many close and dear friends. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert L. Vance; two brothers, William and LeRoy Nelms; and two sisters, Lottie Page Pierce and Elma Virginia Layman. Joseph James (Jimmy) Noel, age 78, of Hopewell, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at John Randolph Medical Center. Mr. Noel was born November 2, 1923 in Hopewell, Va., the son of the late Joseph Cline and Lula Duff Noel. Jimmy was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion Post, V.F.W. Jacob J. Charles E. “Buster” Puffenbarger, 72, of Montpelier, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Evelyn Chapman Puffenbarger; three daughters, Rosalind Cothran, Yvonne Parrish, and husband, David, and Michelle Timmons and husband, Rusty; three grandchildren, Chase Cothran, Lindley and Logan Parrish; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Bill Stewart, Bonnie and Don Clatterbuck, and Joanne and Harvey Shifflet; many nieces and nephews, and many close friends. John Robert Pulliam Jr., 91, of Victoria, Va., died February 17, 2002. He was a retired engineer with the Norfolk & Southern Railroad, a member of the Victoria Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Ruby Alice York Scearce, beloved wife of the late Rev. William Leonard Scearce Jr., went quietly into the arms of her Lord on February 15, 2002. Alice was born March 27, 1911 in Central Falls, N.C. She was the last surviving child born to Frank Lesley York and Mary Ida York York. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Evelyn York Ferree and brothers, Clarence L. York, Paul E. York, North Conrad York, Leslie Frank York and Colon Wesley York. Alice was a faithful servant of her Lord, serving the Methodist ministry at her husband's side for 43 years. Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her daughter, Emilie Sue Scearce Mahoney; son-in-law, Elliott A. Mahoney Jr.; and grandchildren, Shaun F. Mahoney and Molly A. Mahoney. She is also survived by nieces, Pat Y. Lefebre of California, Ginger Y.
Jones of Florida, Betty Y. Hedrick of Tennessee; and nephews, Randy York of Illinois, Jack and Billy Ferree of North Carolina and Glenn York of North Carolina. Also surviving are her faithful nephew and his wife, Leon and Janice Haywood of Danville; special friends, Maude Dalton and Winnie ter Horst of Richmond; and her extended family at Outlook Point Assisted Living. Mama was a little trooper who over came a great many emotional and physical challenges in recent years. She will be forever in my heart and the very special mother who always put me first and to whom I owe my life. Marvis E. Seewagen, age 85, of Midlothian, Va., died Saturday, February 16, 2002. Survivors include her husband, Walter C. SPENCER
William Price Spencer, M.D., died Saturday, February 16, 2002 in Abingdon, Virginia at the age of 80. Born in East Orange, N.J. to William Benjamin Spencer and Ethel Price Spencer, Dr. Spencer grew up in Baltimore, Md., but lived his adult life in Richmond, Va. and retired to the Bristol area in 1986. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Catherine Waddell Spencer, he is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline L. Spencer, M.A., of Hampton, Va., and Dr. Carole S. Mask, D.V.M., of Abingdon; one grandson, Grady P. Mask of Bristol; one great-grandson, Devon Mask; a brother, Richard N. Spencer of Richmond; and a sister, Barbara S. Read of Marco Island, Fla. Dr. Spencer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and served on the staff of the student newspaper. Fulfilling his lifelong desire to become a doctor, he then enrolled as a student in the University's Medical School. He was a member of the school's "Dawn Patrol" during World War II, and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps upon graduation in 1944. After the war, Dr. Spencer completed his internship as a physician for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and then his residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. For over 25 years, he maintained a private practice in pediatrics in the Richmond area while simultaneously serving as adjunct Assistance Professor of Pediatrics at MCV. In 1969, he accepted a fulltime appointment as Associate Professor of Pediatrics. While at MCV-VCU, he taught in the pediatric allergy and immunology and pediatric nurse practitioner programs, as well as serving as head of the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic. While living in Richmond, Dr. Spencer was an active member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Richmond Kiwanis and the Southeastern Allergy Association, as well as the UVA Alumni Association. He was a tireless volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America. For many years, he took 100 Richmond area Boy Scouts on a three week trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico each summer. In recognition of his years of service, he was awarded the Silver Beaver and the Silver Antelope by the BSA. In 1986, Dr. Spencer retired from MCV-VCU and moved to Bristol, where he worked part-time for Highlands Community Services in mental health, and served as adjunct professor at Virginia Highlands Community College. At the time of his death, Dr. Spencer was employed as clinician for the Mt. Rogers District of the Virginia Department of Health, a position he had held for 16 years. Additionally, he was active in many community volunteer organizations including the Kiwanis Club and the Boy Scouts of America. A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon, Va. at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 18. Burial will be at the University Cemetery in Charlottesville at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the local Boy Scouts of America Council, the local Kiwanis Club, or Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, Tenn. 37620.
