Harry Carl Wiles, retired pastor, dies
Nov 03, 2002
By the age of 19, Harry Carl Wiles knew his days at a Hagerstown, Md., shoe factory were numbered. "He felt God was calling him to the ministry," said his wife, Peggy Hicks Wiles.
After graduating from Central Bible Institute, now Central Bible College, in Springfield, Mo., he spent 60 years as an Assemblies of God pastor.
Mr. Wiles, 88, who led Bethel Assembly of God in Richmond's Fan District for 25 years before he retired during the early 1990s, died of cancer Thursday in a local hospital.
"He was a terrific Bible scholar and had a tremendous knowledge of the word of God and of humanity," said his daughter, Karen Mercer-Hicks, of Powhatan. "His passion was reading, learning and teaching."
His first assignment was helping organize and lead a handful of people at Culpeper Assembly of God in Culpeper.
During that time, he also established the Orange Assemblies of God in Orange. Skilled in home repairs, he helped build the Orange church and also bought properties that he fixed up and rented.
After serving in Isle of Wight, he came to Richmond to Bethel Assembly of God at Park Avenue and Meadow Street, where he later retired. During his time in Richmond, he also established churches in Blackstone, Hopewell and Highland Springs.
After he retired, Mr. Wiles led Wednesday-night Bible studies at Broken Bread Ministries Church in Highland Springs.
A trim man who liked to look neat, he liked to wear western ties when he was not in his ministerial robes. "When he was in his 40s, he was diagnosed with diabetes.. He took weight off and became very health-conscious," his daughter said. "He controlled the diabetes. with his diet. He took good care of himself. At 88, he looked more like a person in his 70s."
A history buff who loved to travel, he took his family on vacations up and down the East Coast, particularly to historic sites.
Mr. Wiles loved animals, particularly dogs. His pride and joy was Yukon, a husky he brought home from Alaska, his daughter said. Mr. Wiles was a familiar sight on his deck throwing bread to the birds every day.
In addition to his wife and daughter, survivors include a son, Harry William Eugene Wiles, of Richmond; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the cemetery of Broken Bread Ministries Church, 506 S. Holly Ave., Highland Springs.

'Rev. Sam' Scott, 70, was salesman, coach
Jul 31, 2002
The Rev. Samuel Albert Scott's walk through life brought him to a higher purpose and an acceptance of God's calling to enter the ministry. But along the way, Mr. Scott's life walk often was at a brisk trot or even a full sprint.
Mr. Scott, an associate pastor at Quioccasin Baptist Church who helped pioneer the athletic program at John M. Gandy School in Hanover while the school still was the county's all-black high school, died Thursday. Known to many as "Rev. Sam," he was 70.
In his youth, Mr. Scott's athletic prowess earned him a draft call from Milwaukee's professional baseball team. Unfortunately, a draft call from Uncle Sam superseded sports and led Mr. Scott to a tour of Army duty in Korea.
When he returned home, Mr. Scott rarely dwelt on his missed pro ball chance. Instead, he elected to share his love of sports in other ways.
"He took his sports in a different direction," said his son, Glen Scott of Minneapolis. "He shared his skill and talents with the youth."
After graduating from A&T State College in Greensboro, N.C., on an athletic scholarship, Mr. Scott returned to his Richmond home in 1958 to teach and coach at Carter G. Woodson High School in Hopewell.
Two years later, he crossed counties to Hanover, where he taught history and geography and pioneered the football program at Gandy. When school segregation ended, Gandy became an elementary school and Mr. Scott was moved to Lee-Davis High School.
He left Hanover in 1970 to teach at Maggie L. Walker High, where he coached baseball and was an assistant coach of the school's "Mighty Green Dragons" football team.
Mr. Scott retired from teaching in 1981 but wasn't ready to put his feet up. He spent six years as a car salesman. He earned a number of sales distinctions, but for Mr. Scott the exercise had little to do with selling cars.
"I remember dad telling me so many times that he wasn't really interested in the sale," said his son. "He was always more interested in the story and listening to people, and trying to help them with their problems."
His car-salesman turned counselor role proved pivotal. "It helped to catapult him" into full-time ministry.
In 1987, he accepted his calling and was ordained soon after. In 1995, he earned his master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University.
In addition to his son, Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, the Rev. Zenobia Scott; his daughter, Letra Scott Dennis, of Richmond; two brothers, James A. Scott Jr., of Maryland, and Robert F. Scott, of Richmond; and five grandchildren.
His funeral was held Tuesday at Quioccasin Baptist Church in Richmond. He was buried in Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Francine Waddy, 56
Mar 15, 2001
In business and as an educator, Francine Maureen Savoy Waddy relied on a self-assurance and calm that placed people at ease - both pupils in her classroom and customers of her family's funeral home in Lancaster.
"She always had a smile," said Brenda Campbell Phillips, a friend of Mrs. Waddy since childhood and owner of Campbell Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. "She was a mild-mannered but outgoing person."
Mrs. Waddy, a retired Kilmarnock business teacher who taught for more than 20 years at Lancaster High School, died Wednesday. She was 56.
She was also a partner with her husband, Barry O. Waddy, in the family's mortuary business, Barry O. Waddy Funeral Home.
Teaching, said Phillips, had been a love for Mrs. Waddy since the two were children growing up across the street from each other.
"She was the oldest of her siblings," Phillips said, hinting at early lessons that Mrs. Waddy later applied to classroom management.
A business teacher at the high school beginning in 1969, the same year she and her husband were married, Mrs. Waddy retired from teaching in 1994 because of health concerns. She had begun teaching in 1967 at Lottsburg Elementary School in Lottsburg.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Waddy is survived by a daughter, Sharon Sha Na' Waddy; a son, Oscar Lamont Waddy; her parents, Vernal Layne Savoy and Elizabeth Norris "Peepsie" Savoy; five sisters, Erna S. Jones, Cynethia S. Lewis, Artese S. Kelly, Lillie S. Woolridge and Sharon Y. Savoy; and three brothers, Vernal Layne Savoy Jr., Glenn W. Savoy and Tony Savoy.
A funeral will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lancaster Middle School in Kilmarnock.
