Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Payne Stratton, 93, of Richmond, died November 20, 2001 at a local hospital. The daughter of Charles W. and Mary Elizabeth Payne, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Louise Trice, Virginia Powers, Roland W. Payne and C. Welford Payne; and a niece, Barbara Payne Phillips. She is survived by her nephews, William "Bill" Powers and R.W. "Buddy" Payne; nieces, Mary Jane Huff, Betty Oliver, Betsy Needham, Anna Lou Flynn; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Payne. Born in Chesterfield County, she lived and worked in Silver Spring, Md. until her move back to Richmond when she retired in the early 1970's. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. VERLANDER
Zelma W. "Sunny" VerLander of Glen Allen passed away Sunday, November 18, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Bobby VerLander; a daughter, Bobbie Jo Bohr; a son, George R. VerLander Jr.; one brother, Clevo Wheeling; two sisters, Ina Gail Bowers and Virginia Stanley; also six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Sunny was an employee of Best Products for over 17 years. Ruby S. West, 91, of Richmond, widow of Richard A. West, died November 21, 2001. She is survived by her two sisters, Nellie S. Weinstein and Nora S. Childress; two nephews, Preston D. Mills and Bruce Leigh Weinstein; niece, Jean DesJardins; a lifelong friend, Nancy Lee Garcci; and other family and friends. Mrs. West retired from C&P Telephone with 45 years of service. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Dr. William Harper "Winks" Alexander, 83, of Francis Street, Hopewell, died Thursday, March 22, 2001 at his residence. He was born in Petersburg, Va. and had been a life long resident of this area. Dr. Alexander was a member and had held various offices in the Virginia State Golf Association, a past Lt. Governor, Capital District, Kiwanis International, a member of the Petersburg Country Club, and a retired Dentist. He was the son of the late David and Dora Harper Alexander. Dr. Alexander is survived by his wife, Martha Loving Alexander of Hopewell; one brother, Dr. Leon Harper Alexander of Lake City, Fla.; five nieces and one nephew. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 26, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will be private. Susie Irene Amory, 89, of Varina, went home to the Lord Thursday, March 22, 2001. She is survived by one sister, Mildred Boone; nine nieces and nephews, 20 great-nieces and nephews, and 16 great-great-nieces and nephews. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. George "Bernard" Bennett, 84, departed this life on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at John Randolph Nursing Home. He was been a lifelong resident of Chesterfield County. He loved to garden and he was a master carpenter. Bernard was the son of the George Phillip and Ellen Henshaw Bennett. CRUMPLER
William Edward Crumpler, 69, of Lexington, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at his home. Mr. Crumpler was born on October 30, 1931, in Norfolk, was raised in Richmond, and was a son of the late Willard Lionel Crumpler and Margaret Elizabeth Coltran Crumpler. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School, Class of January 1949, and the Virginia military Institute, Class of June 1954, and was a member of the Brother Rat Class of '53. He served in the Army Infantry Division as a first lieutenant from 1954-56 and served in the Army Reserves until 1962. He was the safety director for the Whitehurst Transport Inc. in Richmond, retiring in 1997. Mr. Crumpler was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Richmond, a member of the Lexington Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Lexington Downtown Development Association and was the co-owner of Colonial & Country Collections in Lexington. Mr. Crumpler is survived by his wife, Karen Engley Crumpler, Lexington; one son, William Scott Crumpler, Winchester; one daughter, Laura Lynn Heltzel, Richmond; two stepchildren, Deanna Marie Noell, Fairfield, Christopher Brandon Noell, Lexington; one brother, R. Wayne Crumpler, Richmond; four grandchildren and one stepgrandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Jackson Memorial Hall at VMI, with Rev. R.
