Ila L. Diffee, age 92, formerly of Burlington, N.C., died Tuesday, August 27, 2002. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Diffee; daughters, Louise Blackwood, Joyce Barham and Patsy Davis; grandson, Dave Barham; parents, George Thomas and Anna Belle Yarbro Lewis; three brothers and five sisters. She is survived by her son, Clement L. Diffee; grandchildren, Lynn Blackwood, Paul Blackwood, Ron Barham, Kathy Blevins, Renee Bartis, Darryl Diffee, Craig Diffee, Derrick Diffee, Mike Parker and Paul Seay; also numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Alice E. Edmonds of Richmond departed this life Sunday, August 25, 2002. Louise Pollard Gray, 87, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, August 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, Otis C. Gray. Entered into eternal rest on the evening of August 26, 2002, Dr. Charles Frederick Hutton, husband of Madeline Hyett Hutton. Residence, Charleston, S.C. All services will be private. Dr. Hutton was born November 22, 1918 in Leeds, England, the son of Charles William Hutton and Elsie Hallas Hutton. His education included Leeds University and Medical School in England and his Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Guy's Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital, London. He served as a Surgeon Lieutenant with the British Royal Navy during World War II. His academic appointments included: Instructor to Radiological Technicians for M.S.R. Qualification, Instructor and Lecturer to Undergraduates and Postgraduates, Consultant Radiologist, at Central Middlesex Hospital, London, England (1955-1965); Consultant Neuroradiologist at Ashford Hospital, England (1962-1965); Radiologist in Saskatchewan, Canada (1965-1968). He served as an Associate Professor of Radiology at The Medical College of Virginia during 1968-1970 and became a Professor of Radiology in 1970. He was appointed Vice Chairman, Division of Diagnostic Radiology in 1972 and retired in 1986 from The Medical College of Virginia. Among his many honors, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a distinguished clinician and researcher. He is survived by his wife of 54 years of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters, Dr. Martine Hutton of Charleston, S.C. and Dr. Nicola LoCascio of Huntington, W.Va.; four grandchildren, William and Claire Seabrook of Charleston, S.C. and Adam and Gwyneth LoCascio of Huntington, W.Va. Margaret Coleman Leake died August 23, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of Richmond, graduating from the old John Marshall High School. She received her BA from Westhampton College (University of Richmond) and a Degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Miss Leake served as a librarian in the Richmond City Public School's William Fox, Oak Grove and Fulton Schools. She is survived by a niece and nephew, a great-niece and great-nephews. Private services were held Tuesday, August 27, 2002 in the family section in Hollywood Cemetery. Miss Leake requested that no memorials be made as friends sustained her all of her life.

Harriett Rudd Yeamans Mercer died July 27, 2002 at Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, N.C., her home since 1994. She was born December 1, 1918 in Richmond, Va., the daughter of Harriett Rudd Yeamans and Joseph Benjamin Yeamans. She graduated from the University of Richmond with a B.A. in 1940 and later received a Masters degree in Education. She was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Chesterfield County Public Schools. Her volunteer work through the years included Retreat Hospice care, board member of Southside Day Nursery, tutoring, and Highland Farms library and health center. She was an active and devoted member of the Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting. Her warm and caring personality and fine mind brought her many friends who will miss her greatly. She is survived by her husband, Isaac John Mercer; and three children, James Rudd Mercer of Derry, N.H., Richard Kennon Mercer of Richmond and Anne Mercer Ambrose of Greensboro. There are six grandchildren. In Richmond she was an active and devoted member of the Friends Meeting, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 2 p.m. at 4500 Kensington Avenue.
