Margaret Eileen Abrams, age 65, of Blacksburg, left to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in New Kent, Va. on October 2, 1936 to the late Jacob Leonard and Mary Estelle Meredith. She was preceded in death by a brother, McKinley Meredith; and a sister, Lorene Meredith. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her loving memory her husband, James Stanley Abrams; her children, Carlette Estelle Abrams of Newport News and James Garry Abrams of Richmond and Margarita Angela Abrams of Blacksburg; a daughter-in-law, Maria Alexandria Abrams of Richmond; grandchildren, Aundrea Danielle Scott, Jonathan David Scott, Parker Nathaniel Abrams, Kristina Margarite Abrams, Christopher Alexander Abrams; brothers, Leonard Harold Meredith and Robert Junious Meredith; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Meredith and Claretta Meredith, Lucille Manning, Dorothy Abrams, Nel Abrams, Mary Meredith; aunts, Inez Miller, Sophronia B. Woodson, Gracie Braxton; uncles, Luther Braxton and Meaco Woodson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 13, 2002 at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, 1730 West Street in Radford, Va. 24141 with Rev. C. Cole Casey officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park, Radford. The viewing for Mrs. Abrams will be from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday at the church. There will be no family visitation at the funeral home. Kelvin D. Ballard, 48, of Petersburg died on July 7, 2002 at MCV Hospitals. He was a former resident of Emporia and was a retired corrections officer with the Virginia Department of Corrections. He is survived by his wife, Velma J. Ballard; three sisters, Peggy Hill of Virginia Beach, Edith Locke of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Amaza Ballard of Taneytown, Md.; two brothers, Anthony Ballard of Largo, Fla. and Frederick Ballard of Franklin, Pa.; father-in-law, Edward C.
Jones of Emporia; five sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, two aunts, one uncle, 10 nieces, 10 nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends including one devoted friend, Calvin Wright of Richmond. Richard B. "Ricky" Blank, 75, of Glen Allen, passed away July, 9, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara H. Blank; his devoted daughter, Kathy P. Minor and her husband, George Minor; and two cherished granddaughters, Brittany and Brooke Pleasants. Mr. Blank was a WWII US Navy veteran reargunner. Ricky will be surely missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 12 in the chapel mausoleum at Westhampton Memorial Park. Margaret L. Braswell, 82, of Chester, died July 8, 2002. She was the widow of William Braswell. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Veillon of Louisiana, Marian Southworth and her husband, Lewis of Richmond, Juanita Hutchins and her husband, Rick of Midlothian; brother, George Hamilton of Oak Grove, Va.; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Thomas Edward Butler, 87, of the 1500 block of Miltate Ave., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 10, 2002. Thomas was a native of Spotsylvania, Va. and the son of the late John Thomas and Lena Leathers Butler. He has been a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church since 1947 and was very active in the church, where he has served as Chairman of Deacons, general Sunday school secretary, Baptist Men's director and was an honored deacon. He also was a member of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Eula Crisp Butler; his sons, Edward Wayne Butler and his wife, Virginia, Kenneth L. Butler and his wife, Nancy, all of Virginia Beach; his sisters, Alice Elliot, Catherine Pettus, both of Richmond, Ella Javins and her husband, John, Elsie Harrison, all of Partlow, Va.; his grandchildren, Andrew Edward Butler and his wife, Christina of Chesapeake, Katherine L. Butler of Alexandria, Va; great-grandchildren, Evan Andrew Butler and Nathaniel Edward Butler, both of Chesapeake. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 12 in Virginia Heights Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Vintinner and Rev. CALLIHAN
America's greatest generation has lost one of its finest. Paul J. Callihan, 78, departed this life peacefully at home July 9, 2002 after a courageous battle with leukemia. He leaves behind his wife, Jean of Midlothian, Virginia; daughter, Karen and son-in-law, Mark of Seattle; grandchildren, Jeremy of Boise, Idaho and Erin of Bozeman, Montana and Cali and Cheyenne Fredrichs; brothers, Harvey of Vienna, W.Va., James of St. Albans, W.Va. and Robert of Staunton, Va. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. A native of West Virginia, he resided with his wife, Jean, in St. Albans, W.Va., where he was employed by FMC for 35 years. He retired and moved to Brandermill where he called home for 20 years. He was active in the community there and volunteered his time to many projects. He will be deeply missed by a multitude of friends and family and neighbors whose lives were enriched by his energy and sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at the Brandermill Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hospice of Central Virginia or to the Brandermill Church.

Jim Cook of Forest City, N.C. died Tuesday, July 9, 2002. He was a retired school principal for Henrico Public County Schools for 16 years. Survivors include his wife Juanita Cook of Forest City, N.C.; four daughters, Linda Cook, Sandra Iscoe, Susan Katz and Kathryn Cook, all of Richmond, Va.; two stepdaughters, Denise Price and Ronea Newton, both of N.C.; two stepsons, Thomas Mielbourne of Baltimore, Md. and Douglas Newton of N.C. Howard M. (Slim) Crone, 85, of Mechanicsville, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002. He was the widower of Vivian Koetzel Crone. He is survived by a daughter, Pamela C. Bohannon; a son, Harvey (Bubba) Crone and his wife, Nancy Crone; a granddaughter, Sharlee M. Crone; a grandson, Brian C. Crone; and a sister, Julia Bolling. Mr. Crone was a retired member of Boilermaker Local No. 45 and a Army veteran of World War II. James Lewis Crump, age 75, of Drakes Branch, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002. Surviving are his wife, Girleen B. Frances Ellen Lohmann Ford departed this earth July 8, 2002. Mrs. Ford was a member of Milden Presbyterian Church, graduated from John Marshall High School in 1938, served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 and was retired from Mutual Insurance, Richmond. Survivors are her husband, James L. Ford; a son, James L. Ford Jr. of Lovingston; a daughter, Patricia L. McGhee of Warsaw; a sister, Shirley Rose of Mechanicsville; and four grandchildren.
