Elliot J. Clark Sr., 86, of the 1600 block of Old Donation Pkwy., Virginia Beach, died May 31, 2001 at his residence. He was born in Springfield, Mass., and was the widower of Helen V. Clark. He was a Master Sargeant in the United States Army for 23 years. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Helen C. and Kenneth R.
Johnson of Virginia Beach; four sons, Elliot J. Clark Jr. and his wife, Susan M. of Richmond, Robert T. Clark and his wife, Katherine of Corvallis, Oregon, Charles A. Clark and his wife, Tara C. of San Diego, Calif. and Stephen J. Clark of San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Arlene Tellier of Detroit, Mich.; and seven grandchildren. COOPER
James Edward Cooper, retired traveling salesman and businessman formerly of Clarksville, Va., died at Westminster-Canterbury in Richmond Thursday, May 31, 2001, at the age of 97. Mr. Cooper traveled for 40 years through Virginia and North Carolina for the Turner-White Casket Co. of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was also co-owner of the Clarksville Furniture Co. and Watkins Cooper Funeral Home, now Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home, of Clarksville. He was active in real estate development around Buggs Island Lake in the lake's early years. Mr. Cooper was born December 23, 1903, the son of Williamson Lee and Geneva Albright Cooper of Graham, N.C. He attended North Carolina State College in Raleigh, N.C. An active member of Clarksville Presbyterian Church, he served as an officer and teacher for many years. He was a member of the North Carolina Salesmen's Association, serving as president during one period. Mr. Cooper was a member of the Adonitam Lodge, No. 149 AF&AM, Oxford, N.C., and Acca Temple A.A.O.N.S.M. of Richmond, and the Clarksville Lions Club. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, the former Charlotte Watkins, native of Oxford, N.C.; three daughters, Jacquelyn Cooper Adams of Williamsburg, Gwendolyn Cooper Wamsley of Richmond and Charlotte Cooper Gregory of Havre de Grace, Md.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Owens Litchfield Day "Scrapper", 86, of Richmond, died on May 31, 2001. He was born in Waynesboro, Va. on June 28, 1914 as the youngest child of Samuel Thompson Day and Leta Ferguson Day. During his schooling in Waynesboro he was successful academically and excelled on the athletic field, playing every sport and serving as captain of the teams. In 1937 he graduated with a degree in business administration from VPI and SU, earning membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa, an honorary fraternity for leadership. He was also a member of the cadet corps. His nickname "Scrapper" originated from his athletic prowess of quickness and agility, as he played varsity basketball and baseball, serving as baseball captain for the 1937 team. During the summertime he played semi-pro baseball in a Richmond league. Starting in the personnel office for DuPont in Waynesboro, then being transferred to Denver, Colorado, Mr. Day was moved to the Richmond DuPont plant where he served over 38 years before his retirement in 1975. During World War II he was a U.S. Army captain, serving in North Africa and Italy. For over 60 years, Mr. Day has been a member of Boulevard United Methodist Church where he has been a choir member, soloist, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the administrative board. He has served as a board member for Flint Homes, an active supporter of the Methodist Children's Home, a 20 year volunteer with Meals-On-Wheels, a member of CFO (a Christian organization), and the Emmaus Community. As an avid golfer, Mr. Day has the distinction of making three holes-in-one and was the Senior Champion at Willow Oaks Country Club in 1977. He and his late wife were members of several bird watching clubs in the Richmond area. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Annette "Polly" Hawkes Day, who died in 1996. He is survived by his son, Frank V. Wilson of Richmond; three grandchildren, Christine and Ed Ivie of Orlando, Florida, Mark Litchfield and Roxanne Wilson of Richmond, Virginia and Andrew Blaine Wilson of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Brooke Ivie of Orlando. Other survivors are his brother-in-law, Waddy Allnut of Richmond; his nephew, William Overton Day Jr. and Shirley of Waynesboro; his niece, Nancy Day Anderson Haga and Ralph of Farmville. Eugenia Hay Ellett, 84, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 28, 2001. She was born in Greensboro, N.C., the daughter of Adolph McClary Hay and Annie Kime Hay. She was retired from Children Inc. Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Ellett Underwood; two sons, John Hay Ellett and Timothy Fields Ellett; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one nephew and his wife, Randy and Charlotte Ridgeley. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at 7:30 p.m. at Belmont United Methodist Church, 3510 Broad Rock Blvd., Richmond, Va. 23234. Rev. Jeff Mickle officiating. Isam Gordon "Ike" Gay, 67, of Victoria, Va., died Wednesday, May 30, 2001. He was born in Gumberry, N.C., son of the late, Robert Bennett Gay and the late Hilda Bruce Gay. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Fireman First Class aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Randolph. He was a graduate of Victoria High School and Chowan College. He was a retired engineer with the Norfolk Southern Corp., local chairman of the United Transportation Union, member of Lunenburg County VFW Post 9954 and Victoria Masonic Lodge No. 304 and Royal Arch Chapter No. 66. He was a member of the Victoria United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mabel Mountcastle Gay; two daughters, Rhonda Lynn Gay of Colonial Heights, Natalie Elizabeth Gay of Victoria; a son, Stephen Gordon Gay of Tampa, Fla.; one granddaughter, Madeline Elizabeth Holder of Colonial Heights; two sisters, Annie Lucille Bragg and Martha Lee White; two brothers, James Oscar Gay and Calvin Bennett Gay, all of Victoria; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Stancil Gay. Willie Moore Krausse Gray, 102, of Richmond, widow of Spott C. Krausse and Cecil Gray, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001. She is survived by her son, Spott C. Krausse Jr. and his wife, Christine B. Krausse of Richmond; stepdaughter, Ellen Gray Anderson and her husband, Emmett Anderson of Memphis, Tenn.; stepson, John C. Gray and his wife, Anne Gray of Williamsburg; sister, Valera M. McLarty of High Point, N.C.; nine grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gray was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church. Gertrude "Trudy" "Oma" Gunzburg died on May 30, 2001, in Stamford, Conn. Born June 16, 1914 in London, England, she was a nurse during WWII and later had a career in retail in Richmond, Virginia. But as all of her family agree, her biggest accomplishments in life were her roles as wife, mother and grandmother. Her devotion to her beloved husband, Ernest, and children, Frank and Mary, highlighted her life. She was "the" most extraordinary wife and mother. Her positive attitude and inner strength reflected her spirit which will live on with her cherished grandchildren, Win and Tori, Lisa, Eli, Avi, Ari, Menachem, and Meira. She is survived by her children, Dr. Frank Gunzburg and his wife, Sandy of Baltimore, Maryland and Mary Vitkowsky of Greenwich, Conn. Also surviving are her eight grandchildren; two sisters, Bea Lucas of Baton Rouge, La. and Frieda Lowenthal of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, Ken Hyde of San Francisco, Calif. Also surviving are her two sisters-in-law, Margot Reeves of Warrenton, Va. and Hilda Dumier of Washington, D.C. who were like sisters to her. Funeral services were held at Sol Levinson Funeral Home in Baltimore, Maryland.

Annie Trent Harrell, 73, of Richmond, died May 30, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Creech Harrell and is survived by three daughters, Ruth McCray, Elizabeth Rainer and Phyllis Thompson; a son, Frederick Creech Harrell Jr.; a brother, Dan Trent; two sisters, Ruth Forgue and Georgia Jenkins; six grandchildren. Virginia Deisher Nicely of Chesterfield died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at Chippenham Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Nicely Sr. and all of her siblings. She is survived by three sons, James L. Jr., Paul and Benny Joe and his wife, Evelyn, all of Chesterfield; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lucy and Nicky Cooke of Chesterfield, Janice and Robert Taylor of Amelia, Jane and Monte Brackenridge of Clifton Forge and Sandra and Ronnie Wheeler of Matoaca; sister-in-law, Frankie Deisher of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Louis E. Pennington Sr., age 85, of
Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on May 21, 2001, in the
Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Jeffersonville, Ind., January 19, 1916. He was the son of Pinckney Andrew Pennington and Marie Alice Lynch Pennington. He was retired from Reynolds Aluminum in Richmond, Va., following a 40 year tenure with the company. He was a 55 year member of the Masonic Order.
