KITE
Juanita Goodwin Kite, 81, of Blackstone, Va., died January 1, 2002 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, George Preston Kite Sr. She was the daughter of the late Lafayette Goodwin and Mollie Wilson Goodwin, born in
Carter County, Tenn. April 29, 1920. After school, she worked at the American Bemberg Corp., a silk mill in Elizabethton, Tenn., until 1947. The plant made parachutes for the WWII effort. In 1948, she relocated with her husband to Virginia where they owned and operated the Wellville Guernsey Farm on Old Richmond Road selling Grade A milk until retiring in November 1981. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Karen K. Cole of Chester, Va. and Suzanne K. Ward of Powhatan, Va.; one son, George Preston Kite Jr. of Blackstone, Va.; one sister, Tress Campbell of Grey, Tenn.; two special nieces, Peggy
Smith of Hampton, Tenn. and Geraldine Livingston of Elizabethton, Tenn.; a host of other nieces and nephews; and six grandchildren, Sarah E., George P. III and John R. Kite, L. Courtney Cole, and Robert L. Jr. and Melanie A. Ward. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery Saturday at 10 a.m., Dr. Zolton Phillips III officiating. William Conway "Uncle Billy" Mitchell, formerly of 1806 Georgia Ave., departed this life on December 30, 2001. He resided with his nephew, William T. "W.T." Mitchell and his niece, the Honorable Sheriff Michelle B. Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ruby E. Mitchell. Mr. Andrew L. Prophett of Richmond and formerly of Brookneal died December 29, in Richmond. He was the president of the Campbell County Branch NAACP, a former at large member of the Campbell County School Board, and a former teacher in the Campbell and Charlotte Public Schools and Southside Community College. He was currently employed as an instructor in the Chesterfield County Public Schools. Survivors include a great aunt, Mrs. Mary Arvis Elam of Brookneal and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 12 noon at the Gethsemane Presbyterian Church in Drakes Branch, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Andrew L. SKLAROFF
Helen Berkowitz Sklaroff of Richmond, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., widow of Samuel Sklaroff, died December 31, 2001. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Manuel and Gwen Sklaroff; sister, Marian Saller; and two granddaughters, Catherine Anne and Elizabeth Sue. Mrs. Sklaroff was a member of Congregation Beth-El and a former member of Congregation Beth-Am in Philadelphia. She was a corresponding secretary for the Grand Group at the Jewish Community Center and Hadassah. During World War II she volunteered to read to children in Philadelphia and was recognized by the governor of Virginia for volunteering to read to children at Ridge Elementary School. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave. Interment will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Haym Salomon Memorial Park, Philadelphia. George "Whitey" Wakefield Jr., 77, of Richmond, Va., passed away December 29, 2001 at Johnston-Willis Hospital. He was born January 7, 1924 in Baltimore, Md., but spent a large portion of his life in various areas of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Frances Henrietta Wakefield. The beloved father of three children, he is survived by a son, George W. Wakefield of Midlothian; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Dave Kostrubanic of Leesburg, Va. and a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kim Wakefield of Woodbridge, Va.; as well as a special son, Michael R. Hansen of Midlothian, Va.; adored grandfather of Karin Lynn and Michelle Dawn Perry of Leesburg, Va. and Holly Ann, Erin Elizabeth and Paige Marie Wakefield of Woodbridge, Va.; and a special granddaughter, Sharon Cone of Midlothian, Va. He is also survived by a sister, Florence Gottlieb of Baltimore, Md.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Cap Schuh, Bertha Warfield, Bud and Ann Bailey, Bob and Geraldine Hammer, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as close friends of the family, the Kents of Rowley, Mass., and the Schoofs of Midlothian, Va.
