Margaret S. Blane
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Margaret Shelburne Blane, 81, of Bowling Green, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at The Medical Center in Bowling Green.
She was born July 13, 1923, in Martinsville, Va., to James Thomas Shelburne and Virgie Lee Ellis Shelburne.
She was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and had a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech. She retired from Leggett's as a saleswoman. She volunteered with literacy programs, the SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County, The Medical Center and Fountain Square Players in Bowling Green.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville.
Surviving is a daughter, Anne Blane Grubbs of Bowling Green.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Johnson-Vaugh-Phelps Funeral Home chapel, 901 Fairview Ave., Bowling Green. Burial will in Martinsville.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Donations may be sent to First United Methodist Church Music Department, 146 E. Main St., Martinsville, Va. 24112 or to Blue Ridge Regional Library Literacy Program, 310 E. Church St., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Dovie J. Durham
Dovie Estelle Joyce Durham, 69, of Danville and formerly of Fieldale, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Collins Funeral Services.

Althenia W. Fulton
Althenia Lorene Watkins Fulton, 77, of 899 W. Maple Drive, Axton, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, N.C.
A lifelong resident of Pittsylvania County, she was born on July 31, 1927, to Will Watkins and Ethel Law Watkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Walter Fulton; a sister, Helen W. Keen; and a brother, Phillip Watkins.
She retired from Hampco Apparel after 45 years. She was a member of Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church and served on its usher board, senior choir, nurses' board, hostess committee, flower committee and senior citizens' program, and as a missionary, a pastor's aide and a condolence clerk.
Surviving are a daughter, Delores Fulton of the home; a son, Harry D. Fulton of Axton; three sisters, Florence Amos and Glodean Carter, both of Axton, and Dorothy Martin of Ridgeway; three brothers, Howard Watkins of Axton, and Windle Watkins and Virgil Watkins, both of Martinsville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Watkins family cemetery in Axton.
Visitation will be held at the church starting at 5 p.m. Monday. The family will receive friends there from 7-8 p.m. and other times at the home.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond L. Gravely
The funeral for Raymond Lee Gravely, 52, of 1263 Elijah Circle, Martinsville, who died March 22, 2005, was held Saturday at Hairston Funeral Home. The Rev. Roher Morrison officiated. Burial was in the Gravely family cemetery.
Pallbearers were Calvin Gravely, Jesse Gravely, Robert Gravely, Dwayne Gravely, Sherwin Gravely and Christopher Gravely.

Katherine K. Matherly
A memorial service for Katherine Diane Kirby Matherly, 53, of 502 Hairston St., Martinsville, who died March 22, 2005, was held at 4 p.m. Friday at Norris Funeral Services chapel. Drs. Ellen Hankle and Joey McNeill officiated.

Paul T. Mattox
The funeral for Paul Travis Mattox, 62, of Hunt Country Farms Road, Martinsville, who died March 22, 2005, was held Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville. The Revs. Randall C. Stevens and John T. Fulcher Jr. officiated. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Jesse Earles, Barry Tinsley, Henry Mattox, Trey Lackey, Ken Moorman, Charles Mattox and William Mattox.
Norris Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

Jeffrey W. Shelton
The graveside funeral for Jeffrey Wayne Shelton, 41, of Rocky Mount, who died March 23, 2005, was held Saturday at Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham. The Rev. Bill Preskitt officiated.
Pallbearers were Chris Turner, David McGuire, Dale Setliff, Randy Setliff, Timmy Wray and Jay Tuggle.
Collins Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.

George L. Shorter
George Leonard Shorter, 75, of 1643 Crestridge Road, Bassett, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Trinity Mission in Rocky Mount.
He was born in Roanoke County on July 16, 1929, to George Harvey Shorter and Annie Lucado Shorter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David T. Shorter; three sisters, Ruby Shorter, Elsie S. Hall and Thelma S. Damewood; and a brother, Melvin Shorter.
He retired from Blue Ridge Trucking after 17 years as a truck driver. He had previously worked for Roy Stone Transfer and R.P. Thomas Trucking.
He served as an Army ranger in the Korean War.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Rakes Shorter of the home; a daughter, Donna S. Barbour of Bassett; two sons, Timothy S. Shorter and George K. Shorter, both of Bassett; a sister, Rosa S. Early of Roanoke; four brothers, Russell Shorter of Roswell, N.M., Charles Shorter of Gainesville, Fla., Dillard Shorter of Roanoke and Robert Shorter of Troutville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with the Rev. Don Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Ocie U. Sutphin
Ocie Underwood Sutphin, 92, of Meadows of Dan, died Friday, March 25, 2005. She was the widow of Kyle P. Sutphin.
Surviving are three sons, Everett Sutphin of Laurel Fork, Glendal Sutphin of Collinsville and Jimmie Sutphin of Willis; a daughter, Shirley Turner of Woodbridge; a brother, Peerless Underwood of Fancy Gap; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Maberry Funeral Home chapel in Floyd. The Revs. Harold Fenstermaker, Joe Quesenberry and S.G. Bolt will officiate. Burial will be in the Underwood cemetery in Meadows of Dan.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

David Watkins
David Watkins of 112 Cozy Lane in the Axton area of Pittsylvania County, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at his home.
Arrangements will be announced by Hairston Funeral Home.

Erva K. Webb
The funeral for Erva Mae Kidd Webb, 70, of Richardson Road, Collinsville, who died March 22, 2005, was held Friday at Norris Funeral Services chapel with Elders Kenny Bowles and Jammie Hancock officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dale Moore, Kevin Parker, Clark Nichols, Mike Nichols, Lewis Kidd, Stuart Pannill, Allen Webb, Ronnie Reeves, Taylor Pannill, Barry Kidd, Jeremy Webb and Gordon Pannill.

Geraldine V. Cannaday
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The funeral for Geraldine Via Cannaday, 78, of Augusta, and formerly of Bassett, Va., who died, Friday, April 1, 2005, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church with Pastor John Shelley officiating. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bassett Funeral Service chapel and other times at the home of her sister, Patricia "Pattie" Smith, 261 Corn Tassell Drive, Bassett.
She was born Nov. 15, 1926, in Long Branch, W. Va., to Charlie E. Via and India Sowder Via. Her parents preceded her in death.
She was a 40-year member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Edgar Cannaday of the home; two sons, Larry Cannaday of Grovetown and Leon Cannaday of Ferrum, Va.; a daughter, Sherry Greer of North Augusta, S.C.; three brothers, Earl Via and Harry Via, both of Bassett, and Noah Via of Stanleytown, Va.; two sisters, Patricia "Pattie" Smith and Atheline Cannaday, both of Bassett; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
