Ethel Elsaesser Hazzard, 79, of Keysville, died Friday, November 2, 2001. She was the widow of Alvin Thomas Hazzard. Surviving are three sons, Allan, Calvin and Wayne Hazzard and their families, all of Richmond; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Elsaesser of Meherrin; one sister, Lois E. Bailey of Keysville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Browning Funeral Home with interment at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Clarksbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Deltaville, Va. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Annie Celeste Old
Jones of Earls, Amelia County, died November 2, 2001 at 95 years of age. She was born in Nottoway County on February 15, 1906, the daughter of Laura Louise White and Alexander Hamilton Old. Mrs.
Jones was married to Rodger Pryor Jones, who died in 1994, for 62 years. After graduating from Blackstone College in 1924, she attended State Teachers College (now Longwood College) in Farmville, Va. Mrs.
Jones taught school in Nottoway County. She was a lifelong member of Rocky Hill United Methodist Church, and its oldest member, where she taught Sunday School for more than 60 years, and represented the East Nottoway Charge at the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for many years. She is survived by two sons, Rodger Pryor

C. Lynn Jonske, 37, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, November 1, 2001 at her home. She is survived by her husband, David P. Ling Chia Ju, 80, of Richmond, formerly of Queens, N.Y. died Friday, November 2, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sarela Ju; three children, Maureen, Jackie and Billy; grandchildren, Christopher and Alyssa, Jessica and Andrew, Mitchell and Amanda; one brother and one sister, both of Shanghai, China. Mr. Ju had a distinguished career in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He was a veteran of WWII and was head chef at Grace Line Cruises and Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center. Louise C. Kennedy, 77, of Richmond, died Thursday, November 1, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James E. Kennedy; daughter, Mildred Kennedy; grandson, Frank Smith; granddaughter, Teresa Dolan and her husband, Michael; great-grandchildren, Kyndal and Nicholas Dolan and Justin Smith; three sisters, Ann Moore of Staunton, Lorene Thompson of Richmond and Lou Parr of Crimora. KIRKLAND
Lois Berry Kirkland, 91, of Colonial Heights, Va., died on Friday, November 2, 2001 at Henrico Doctor's Hospital. She was born on February 22, 1910 in Petersburg, Va. to the late Jesse Hobbs Berry and Carrie Belle Berry. She was the widow of Edward Otha Kirkland. Mrs. Kirkland was a most devoted mother and is survived by two daughters, Carol Faye Ruffin and her husband, Richard C. Ruffin Sr. of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Elizabeth Anne Kelley of Portsmouth, Va.; one son, John Edward Kirkland and his wife, Catherine M. Kirkland of Midlothian, Va.; five grandchildren, Richard C. Ruffin Jr., Charles E. Rivenbark, Robert B. Rivenbark, Johnathan E. Kirkland, and Amy C. Kirkland; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin Ruffin, Kristen Ruffin, Brandon Rivenbark, Brenden Rivenbark, Summer Rivenbark, and Amanda Bland. In addition, she is survived by four brothers, Jesse H. Berry Jr., Branch E. Berry, Eugene N. Berry and Hartwell P. Berry. She was preceded in death by a brother, Hunter J. Berry. Mrs. Kirkland attended Covenant Christian Fellowship. She worked for the Colonial Heights School System and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Colonial Heights Senior Citizens. Her remains rest at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, November 5, with Rev. Michael Murray officiating. Irene Wilson Jeffries Longest, age 88, of St. Stephens Church, Va., widow of William E. Jeffries and G. Raleigh Longest, died Friday, November 2, 2001. She is survived by a daughter, Mary J. Wright; grandson, Roland S. Wright Jr. and wife, Mary; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Andrew Wright; sister, Gladys W. George Willis Mahone, 77, of Ashland, died November 2, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Doris Mahone; his son, David Mahone; his sister, Mollie Miles; a good friend, Stewart Edwards; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mahone retired from General Crushed Stone Co. in Doswell after 33 years of service and was a member of Elon Baptist Church. Justine Holt Manahan, born March 28, 1923 in Brookneal, Va., went to her heavenly home on Friday, November 2, 2001. She is survived by a son, Harold Lockwood Manahan Jr. and wife, Teresa Hale of Ashland, Va.; two daughters, Margaret Sue Manahan and Elizabeth Ann Manahan

Powell Jr. of Richmond; one grandson, Justin Paul Manahan; two granddaughters, Meredith Hale Manahan and Kelly Rae Powell; one sister, Joyce Lee McDowell and husband, Charles McDowell III; one brother, Eugene Gordon Holt; one aunt, Helen Holt of Brookneal, Va.; and sister-in-law, Mildred Manahan Isbell. Mrs. Manahan was employed by the Navy Dept. in Washington, D.C. and the State Dept. in Richmond, Va. She retired from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. after 30 years of employment. After retirement, she worked for the University of Richmond as a Floater Secretary and did volunteer work for the Good News Mission Jail Ministry. She was an auxiliary member of the Gideon International and a member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, Sunday School Teacher and was a Chancel Choir member. Memorials may be given to the Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, the Gideon International and the Patrick Henry Boys Home in Brookneal, Va. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
MANGANO
Charles Mangano, a retired pharmacist from Callao, died November 3, 2001. Charles was born in Garfield, N.J., on April 18, 1923. He spent the first four years of his life in Garfield. His father moved the family to Buenos Aires, Argentina, because of his mothers health. He lived there until he was ten years old, and when he returned to the United States, he did not speak English, but entered the sixth grade. He later became a linguist and spoke four languages fluently. He graduated from Garfield High School. He attended Roanoke College in Salem. He joined and was sent to the University of Richmond Navy V-12 program. After attending Columbia Midshipman School he graduated as an Ensign, U.S.N.R. He attended the Naval Minewarfare School at Yorktown, Va., prior to being transferred to Saipan in the Pacific. He served as Captain and commanded the YMS 267, which swept the Sea of Japan for mines before the occupied forces went into Japan. Upon bringing the ship back to San Francisco, he received his discharge. Charles and Jeanne were married June 8, 1946, and he attended Roanoke College and graduated August 1946. He worked at Solvay Process (Allied Chemical) for three years in the research lab. He then attended Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy, graduating June 1952. On October 31, 1952, he opened Callao Drug in Callao, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, a mission of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Northumberland Lions Club and Virginia Pharmaceutical Association. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanne Shadwell Mangano; daughters, Carol Mangano of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Ann Wilburn and husband, Robert of Callao, Mary Snell and husband, Victor of Warsaw; sons, Kenneth Mangano and wife, Elsie of Warsaw, Anthony Mangano and wife, Mary of Callao, Paul Mangano of Richmond, Michael Mangano and wife, Victoria of Callao, and Christopher Mangano and wife, Dawnna of Greenville; grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, David, Jennifer, Jessica, Virginia, Charles, Laura, Alexander, Marianna, Deanna, Vincent, Angela and Gena Mangano, Brett Wilburn, Rebecca and John Snell; step-grandchildren, Jamie and Christina Rowland and Justin Snell; and two step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services 11 a.m. Monday, November 5, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. Interment Northern Neck Memorial Gardens, Callao. Mrs. Janice Conant McCoy, 73, died Friday, November 2, 2001. She was a native of Chincoteague, Virginia and had resided in the Tri-City Area for over fifty years. William (Bubba) Simms, of Richmond, Va. and Naples, Fla., died Friday, November 2, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Iona Simms; his children, Roi Barlowe, Jimmy Barlowe, Anita Simms Lorinc, Frederick K. White II, Sheila M. Simms, William Simms and Carroll Allen Martin; a brother, Charles Durwood Simms Jr.; a stepsister, Bonnie Simms; and five grandchildren. Mr. Simms retired from Philip Morris after 30 years of service and was a member of the Local Union #203 and in the Marines Reserves for nine years.
