Walter H. Loving
May 28, 2001
During a time when most real estate people refused to sell homes to black families in predominantly white neighborhoods, Walter H. Loving bucked tradition by doing just that.
"Many people feel that when a black moves into a white neighborhood, the property values must go down," Mr. Loving told The Richmond News Leader in 1972 when he became the first black elected to the Richmond Board of Realtors. "There is nothing further from the truth.
"I can't see how it could have any effect when both black and white are in the same economic bracket."
Mr. Loving, who founded Walter H. Loving Realty Co. in Richmond and operated it from 1960 until 1985, died Saturday after a long illness.
He was honored last month by the Black Real Estate Brokers of Richmond with the organization's first Trailblazer Award for his efforts to promote fair housing practices.
Born in Detroit, Mr. Loving moved to Richmond as a child and graduated from Armstrong High School. He joined the Army during World War II and served for three years in combat units in England and France.
After he was discharged in December 1945, he returned to Richmond to join his uncle's business, the J.L. Loving Jr. Tailoring School.
Mr. Loving decided to switch to real estate in 1952 as a part-time salesman. He became a broker in 1955 and formed his own business five years later.
"I started with one room," Mr. Loving said in 1972. "Then it expanded to the floor. Now I own the whole building."
He said he took pleasure in helping people who never thought they would be able to buy a home find a place to call their own.
"He helped so many people. He was very good-hearted," said Lucille Warden Loving, Mr. Loving's wife of 54 years.
During the 1970s, Mr. Loving made frequent trips to Washington to promote fair housing practices. He spoke several times on behalf of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers before congressional committees and the Virginia General Assembly.
Mr. Loving was the co-developer and salesman in the 1960s for the first Richmond area subdivision developed by blacks, which includes Laurel West. He also developed more than 20 homes, including his own, in the historically black Westwood neighborhood.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Loving is survived by a brother, Willie Loving of Glen Allen.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Westwood Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.
Julius C. Hulcher
Jan 24, 2001
Though his specialty was as an ear, nose and throat doctor, for much of his career Dr. Julius C. "Sonny" Hulcher remained an adherent to the old school.
"He was one of those doctors that carried the bag and would come to people's door if necessary," said Dr. Hulcher's son, Charles Hulcher of Richmond.
Some of Dr. Hulcher's billing practices, said his son, might have confounded modern health-maintenance organizations: "I don't think it was all that unusual for folks to pay him in eggs or chickens."
Dr. Hulcher, 85, a lifelong resident of Richmond, died Monday. He operated a private practice specializing in otolaryngology from 1945 until his retirement in 1982.
A 1937 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Hulcher received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1941 and served with the Army Medical Corps during World War II.
Dr. Hulcher is the widower of Elsie D. Wade Hulcher. In addition to his son, Dr. Hulcher is survived by a daughter, Betty Mason of Midlothian.
A graveside service will be held at Westhampton Memorial Park at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at River Road United Methodist Church.
