Brown Girling, 82, died September 1, 2002. She was a registered nurse and long time resident of Virginia Beach, Va. Her husband, Leonard Girling, predeceased her. Surviving are two sons, Leonard M. and William Girling, both of Chesterfield Co., Va., Leonard's wife, Joyce and their sons, Marc and Adam and William's wife, Donna and their daughter, Jennifer. Carl Raymond Hansen Sr., 81, of Richmond, passed away September 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hazel S. Hansen; children, Carl "Ray" Hansen Jr. and his wife, Beverly F., Robert W. Hansen and his wife, Diane B. and Ann Christine Hansen; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Frances H. Tinoko of Richmond; aunt, Lucille Morgan of Crewe; sisters-in-law, Colleen Hansen of Blackstone and Anne Seaman of Port Angeles, Wash.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Hansen retired from Millhiser Bag Co. with 45 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, September 7 at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. Mr. William Bernard Kump, 50, of Petersburg, Va., died Thursday, August 22, 2002. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Roberta Lee Lawrence, 56, of Millboro, Virginia, died Saturday, August 31, 2002 at the Bath County Community Hospital. Roberta was born June 30, 1946 in Washington State, the daughter of the late Robert and Bernice Curley. She lived in Millboro most of her adult life. She was a homemaker and known for her homemade cooking. She was an avid listener to classical music. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Bernice Curley and her husband, Pastor Roy Lonnie Lawrence. She is survived by two sons, Millard Lawrence Sr., his wife, Toni and their newborn son, Millard Jr. of Ohio; a son, James Lawrence Sr. and his son, James "Jamie" Lawrence Jr. of Millboro; four sisters and their husbands, Judy and Larry Turner of Lake Monticello, Virginia, Rosemary Collins of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, Pat and Donnie
Jones of Glen Allen, Virginia and Cindy Overmand of Charlottesville, Virginia; her two best friends, Ms. Catherine "Kitty" Kiser and Ms. Ruby Lee, both of Millboro. Also surviving are Roberta's pets, Tootsie, Bell and Fanny who enjoyed their weekly trip to Joyce Tuttle's Hair Salon. Alma Hewitt Manhattan, 90, of Richmond, widow of Ambrose W. Manhattan Sr., retired local registered nurse, passed away August 31, 2002. She is survived by her children, James H. Manhattan and his wife, Jane, Mary Jane White and her husband, Leslie, and Ambrose W. Manhattan Jr. and his wife, Judy; also six granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Graveside services were held Wednesday, September 4, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Rose Lee (Duckie) McLaughlin, 86, of Varina, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002. She was the widow of Vernsley G. McLaughlin. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Margaret W. Morse, Virginia I. Beck, Margaret Rickard, Burrell Bare, Rose Hubschman and Fritz Wagner; also many great-nieces and great-nephews. Her remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 2110 East Laburnum Ave., where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (today). Martha Graves Mitchell (Mrs. J. Elwood Mitchell Jr.), 73, died September 3, 2002 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital's Hospice Unit in Greensboro, N.C. Martha was a native of Greensboro, born February 2, 1929, the daughter of the late Elmer W. Graves Sr. and Jeanette B. Graves. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 51 years, J. Elwood Mitchell Jr.; daughters, Jennie Davis and her husband, Bob of Derby Line, Vt., Mary Hardee and her husband, Joe of Richmond, Va., Betsy Hundley and her husband, Jim of High Point, N.C.; brother, Elmer W. Graves Jr. of Greensboro; grandchildren, Payson and Emily Davis, Woody and Martha Hardee, elizabeth and Rebecca Hundley; and a host of relatives and many dear friends. Martha was an active volunteer in the community throughout her life. Before graduating with honors from The University of Tennessee, she was recognized in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Martha did graduate studies in guidance counseling at UNC-G, was a member of the North Carolina Historical Book Club, a Past President of Reviewers Study Club, Area Representative for Stonecroft Ministries, speaker for Christian Women's Clubs, a Bible study teacher at church, and active in the Walk to Emmaus ministry and the Emmaus Prayer Chapel. Her memorial service will be 2 p.m. September 6, 2002 at Trinity Church on West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro, N.C. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Madelyn Batson Drake Muther, 84, of Richmond, died September 3, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Chester Drake of Nashville, Tenn. She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Drake Davila and Suzanne Drake Wilson; and a son, Frank Stephen Drake; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mary T. (Molly) Newsom, born November 3, 1918, passed away suddenly on September 3, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, N.N. Newsom Jr.; and her brothers, Mack, Ikey, Russell, Bob, Willie and Dan Townsend. She is survived by her sons, N. Kendall and Thomas W. Newsom; two brothers, Norris G. and James E. Townsend; three grandchildren, N. Kendall Jr., Linda D. and Kevin W. She was a longtime employee of Sears, Roebuck & Co. George Benjamin Perkins, 86, of Greensville County, died September 4, 2002. He was a retired carpenter and a resident of the community of Doodlum. The son of the late Charlie B. and Eva Lyzotte Perkins, he was a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church in Purdy where he served on the vestry and was a Sunday school superintendent for 24 years. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucille Presley Perkins; two daughters, Patricia Perkins and Estelle Kidd and husband, William D. Kidd; son, George B. Perkins Jr. and wife, Georgette; sister, Ruth Lynch; and brother, Hugh Lee Perkins; grandchildren, Kim Edwards, Sandra Inge, Ben Perkins III and Kay Elliott; four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Poole and Elsie Harrison. The family will receive friends Thursday (tonight), 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home in Jarratt.
