William D. McRae
Elder William "Bill" Daniel McRae, local businessman and business advocate award winner, died Feb. 28, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was 68.
A resident of 238 Calloway Drive, Fieldale, McRae was born in Red Springs, N.C. on April 3, 1936, to the Rev. John McRae and Panzie Shaw McRae.
He had resided in Henry County for 42 years where he was CEO and owner of McRae Enterprises, was owner and had published the broad-sheet newspaper Positive News for eight years, and he was co-owner of the Hair Studio.
In 2001, McRae was the recipient of the Small Business Administration's Virginia Home-based Business Advocate of the Year.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a member and assistant minister at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Glendora Robertson.
Surviving are his wife, Mary H. McRae of the home; two daughters, Shelia
Jones of Fieldale and Audrey Ray of Red Springs; two sons, Steven McRae of Germany and Orlando McRae of Fredrick, Md.; two sisters, Ruthie M. Bridges of Suitland, Md. and Pansy McRae of Fayetteville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at noon Saturday at the Pentecostal Assembly Building in Fieldale. Elder David A.
Powell Sr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The body will be placed in the assembly building at 6 p.m. Friday where the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. At other times, friends may call at the home.

Gertrude Y. Altschull
RICHMOND -- Gertrude Y. Altschull, 87, of Richmond, and formerly of Martinsville, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005.
She was born and reared in Pittsburgh, Pa., and lived in Martinsville for more than 40 years, where she operated a catering business. Her husband, the late Edward Altschull, operated several businesses in Martinsville, the last one being the former Bargain Store.
She was a life member of Hadassah and a member of Keneseth Beth Israel.
Surviving are three children, Beverley Soble, Naomi Myer and Clifford Altschull, all of the Richmond area; a brother, Ralph Young of Pittsburg; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Feb. 13 at Bliley Funeral Homes' Central Chapel in Richmond. Burial was in Oakwood Hebrew Cemetery.
Doris C. Cecil
The funeral for Doris C. Cecil, 90, of Patrick Springs, who died Feb. 27, 2005, was held Wednesday at Howell Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart. Minister Billy Dixon officiated. Burial was in the Critz Baptist Church Cemetery in Critz.
Pallbearers were Bryan Howell, Randy Wyatt, Karen Kendrick, Marla Perry, Ann Marie Perry, Shannon Haynes, Ashley Cecil, Doug Howell, Eddie Wyatt, William Kendrick, Cassady Kendrick, Donovan Howell and Sarah Perry.

Francis I. Foose of 373 Fisher Drive, Martinsville, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

Helen H. Fountain
Helen Hairston Fountain, 83, of 3540 Hobson Road, Axton, died March 1, 2005, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born in Pittsylvania County on Aug. 29, 1921, to Vance Hairston and Eva Millner Hairston.
She retired from Moorefield Dry Cleaners. She was a member of New Fall Creek Primitive Baptist Church and served as church clerk and treasurer of both New Fall Creek and Black Knob Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, William Clarence Fountain; a son, Christopher Lampkins of Martinsville; a sister, Clara Fountain of Axton; two brothers, Tracy Hairston of Bachelors Hall and Glennie Hairston of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Fall Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Richard Martin, Russell Redd and Leon Gravely officiating. Burial will be in the Hairston family cemetery.
Friends are being received at the home of the son, Christopher Lampkins, 353 Laurel Drive, Martinsville. The family will be at the church to receive friends for one hour prior to Saturday's funeral.

The funeral for William Cecil Gravely, 76, of 714 Blue Knob Road, Martinsville, who died Feb. 25, 2005, was held Wednesday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Michael Penn officiating. Burial was in Carver Memorial Garden.
Pallbearers were Clay A. Gravely, Darnell Brown, De'Ronde Hairston, Eric Richadson, Stanley Gravely and Jeffrey Hairston.

Nannie L. Spencer
Nannie Myrtle Lewis Spencer, 94, of 2565 Knob Church Road, Henry, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Franklin County on Jan. 10, 1911, to Charlie Lewis and Mahala Moore Lewis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Teaford Lee Spencer on Dec. 27, 1986; two sons, Thurman Lee Spencer who died Aug. 4, 1998, and Herman
Green Spencer, who died in 1998; three sisters, Odessa Manley, Alice
Smith and Ada Cruise; three brothers, Richard Lewis, Russell Lewis and Ernest Lewis; and grandsons, Jeffrey Allan Spencer, Thurman David Spencer and Samuel Spencer.
She was a homemaker and a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Bertha S. Hollandsworth of Henry, Marie S. Cooper of Martinsville and Vinnie Evelyn Spencer of Roanoke five sons, Leonard "Mutt" Spencer of Collinsville, Delmar
Green Spencer of Colonial Heights, Arthur Teaford Spencer, James "Jimmy" Thomas Spencer and Bobby Wayne Spencer, all of Henry; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Collins Funeral Services with the Revs. Jerry Brim and Bobby McGhee officiating. Burial will follow at Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at Henry.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Collins Funeral Services.

Annie Belton Swinney, 92, formerly of North Chestnut St., Fieldale, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center.

The funeral for Agnes Cox Wilkinson Bell, 95, of Mount Airy, N.C., who died Feb. 27, 2005, was held Thursday at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart. Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, president of Ferrum College, gave the eulogy. Burial will be today in Sharon Memorial Park
in Charlotte, N.C.
