Kafka, John J.

John J. Kafka 86, Of Colonial Heights, died Tuesday January 25, 2005 at his residence. He was the son of the late Frank C. and Carrie Burton Kafka, was the widower of Yvonne S. Kafka and was a retired Civil Service employee at Fort Lee after 32 years of service He was an active member of Woods United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday School Superintendent for over 50 years and where he sang in the choir and was soloist for many activities in the area. He was the last of the original six men in the Woods men's chorus. He was a charter member of the South Chesterfield Ruritan Club, and was a member of the Chesterfield Historical Society.

He is survived by two daughters; Donna K.Deal and husband John of Richmond, Jan K. Dozier and husband William of Chesapeake VA, two sisters; Virginia "Pete" Stone and Harriet "Dolly" Lau both of Chesterfield; five grandchildren, Virginia Deal Largent and husband Steve of NC, W. Matthew Dozier and wife Heather of GA, Rebecca Deal Long and husband Bill of Richmond VA, Frank J. Dozier and wife Glory of Manassas VA, Kristen J. Dozier of Chesapeake, and one great granddaughter, Amber Yvonne Dozier.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. on Friday January 28, 2005 at Woods United Methodist Church, 7200 Hickory Road Chesterfield, with Dr. Al Lynch officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard . Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be sent to the Crater Community Hospice 840 W Roslyn Rd Colonial Heights 23834

MacDonough, Gertrude W.

Gertrude W. MacDonough entered into eternal rest on June 10, 2002. She is survived by her husband, John Edward MacDonough; three Children Bryan Tevlin MacDonough, John Webster Scheid, and Peter Jeffery MacDonough: A daughter-in-law, Frederica Palumbo McDonough; a son-in-law William Charles Scheid and four grandchildren Christine Marie and Heather Kay, and Bradley John and Todd Webster.

Mrs. MacDonough graduated from Smith College Northampton, Massachusetts. She earned her Master's Degree from the University of Arizona (Flagstaff), and her Certificate for Doctorate from The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA.

A Funeral Mass will be Friday June 14, 2002 11 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Walter Lewis officiating. Burial to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. The Family will Receive friends Thursday evening, June 13, 2002 from 7-8:30 p.m. at St Mary's Catholic Church 9505 Gayton Rd. Richmond Va. a Christian wake service will be at 7:00 P.M..

Mourners are requested to please omit floral displays, and in lieu of flowers, it is suggested contributions be made in her name to the General Scholarship of Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA. Arrangements are provided by E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights.

LaCourse, Mildred W.

Mildred W. LaCourse of Petersburg died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond. She was a native of Chesterfield, the daughter of the late William and Rose A. Warren and was a retired New Accounts Manager for Signet Bank, now Wachovia. She is survived by her husband, Edward LaCourse, Sr., four sons and daughters in law, Edward Jr. and Kong Soon LaCourse, of Newport News, Richard Wayne and Cathy LaCourse of Macon, GA, James Ray and Connie LaCourse of Richmond and John Emil and Deborah LaCourse of Macon, GA., three sisters, Annabelle Dunlap of TN., Annette Collins of Prince George and Patricia Howard of Dinwiddie, seven grandsons, one granddaughter and one great grandson. A memorial service will be held 1:00p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004 in the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Rd. Interment will be Private.

Anna P. Lacy

A funeral for Anna Pearl Lacy, 84, of Spotsylvania County will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at Spotsylvania Courthouse, at noon Saturday, with the Rev. Charles Sydnor and the Rev. Clyde Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Lacy, Kristopher Lacy, Jesse Lacy, Butch Hockaday, John Daniel Hockaday, Amos Hockaday, Shawn Hockaday, Scott Mullins and Dana Reynolds, all grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Survivors include a son, Russell Lacy of Alexandria; four daughters, Mable Lacy, Beverly Hockaday, Barbara Bankert and Vivian Lacy, all of Spotsylvania; 16 grandchildren consisting of seven grandsons and their wives, a granddaughter and her husband; five great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; a stepgranddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund, 8951 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, Va. 22553.

Gaines, Harriet Henderson

CHESAPEAKE - Harriet Gertrude Henderson Terry Gaines, 85, went to be with her Lord on Sat., June 23, 2007 in a local convalescent center. She was born in Campbell County, VA and was the daughter of the late Lizzie Sammie Foster Terry and George Washington Terry, Sr., and the widow of Stanley N. Gaines. Harriet had retired as a telephone operator with First Virginia Bank after many years. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memory are three sisters, Christine T. Price of Virginia Beach, Shirley R. Terry and her husband, Roger, and Patricia Ann Petersen and her husband, Dallas all of Chesapeake; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Verble Thomas Terry and George W. Terry, Jr.

A memorial funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 in Central Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Otis Colston. Burial will be private in Rosewood Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church.

Gaffney, David A.

CWO4, U.S. Army (Ret) David A. Gaffney, 66, of Chester died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Hunter-Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond. A native of Groveland, Florida, he was the son of the late Gordon G. and Fannie Duke Gaffney. Mr. Gaffney was employed by the Judge Advocate General Corp, for over 27 years as a legal administrative assistant. He was a member of the American Bar Association, American Association of Legal Administrators and the Retired Military Officers Association at Fort Lee, and was very active at the Fort Lee Memorial Chapel. He is survived by his wife Hildegard Gaffney, a daughter and son-in-law, Daniela S. and Eric Johnson of Clinton, NJ; a son and daughter-in-law, Markus T. B. and Sarah Gaffney of Roswell, GA; three grandchildren, Micah, Samantha and Keegan Gaffney; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald G. and Dorothy Gaffney of Christiansburg, VA; two sisters and brother-in-law, Gerry Howard of Kissismee, FL and Romonia and Roy Pierce of Tampa, FL as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 31, 2003 at 4:00 P.M. at Fort Lee Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Col. (Ret) Wilkerson officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery with full honors at a later date to be announced. Services are being provided by E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Billy Graham Crusade, the Parkinson Research Foundation, 1501 North West 9th Avenue, Miami, FL 33136 or the American Red Cross, Southside Chapter, 3297 Crater Rd Petersburg 23805.

Fable, Kathryn C.

Kathryn "Kitty" Claytor Fable, 89, of Petersburg, died Monday February 21, 2005 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Richard J. and Blanche Verney Claytor and the widow of Clinton E. Fable. She was also preceded in death by her son Oliver E. Fable. Mrs. Fable was retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. She is survived by her sister Rachel C. Hamner and husband Lawrence Jr. of Chesterfield, Two Nephews Lawerence "Larry" Hamner III, Richard J. Claytor and two great nephews, Cliff and Nicholas Hamner. A graveside funeral service will be held 2:00 PM on Thursday February 24, 2005 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg with the Rev. R. Roland Powell, officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 PM at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice

Fails, Herman

Herman "Herk" Fails, 74, of Palm Coast Florida, formally of Chester Virginia, died Sunday November 28, 2004. He was the son of the late George W. and Annie Wade Fails. Mr. Fails retired from the U.S. Air Force and was the founder and former owner of Chester Realty, and a member of the Palm Coast United Methodist Church in Palm Coast Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Edie Fails, son and daughter in-law Randy and Julie Fails of Florence, S.C.; daughter and son in-law Beverly and Ray Trevillian of Chester, VA; four grandchildren, Kelly, Dustin, Kimberly and Spencer; two sisters Julia F. Johnson of Monroeville AL. and Mary Lasater of Hillsboro TN.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM on Friday December 3, 2004 in the Colonial Heights chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory 2033 Boulevard.

With the Reverend Margaret Kutz officiating. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 - 8:30 PM at the funeral home. Race, Mary L.

Mary L. Race, 90, of Petersburg, died Friday, April 23, 2004 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was the daughter of the late Harry, Sr. and Helen Hargrave Schulze. A brother Harry Schulze, Jr. and a sister Helen S. Mitchell preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, John Race; a daughter and son-in-law, Joan R. and Forest N. Motto of Prince George; a grandson, Forrest Glen Motto of Richmond; a sister, Katherine S. Motley of Petersburg; a half brother Norman Schulze of Clifton, VA and a half sister, Gretchen Mulligan of Luray, VA.

Graveside services will be held Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with the Rev. Joe Elmore officiating. There will be no formal visitation, however, friends may pay their respects Sunday afternoon at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road.

Rager, Yvonne G

Yvonne G. "Bonnie" Rager 51 of Colonial Heights, died on Wednesday, June 3oth, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona and was member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where she was member of the personnel committee, Director of the Youth and was a 10th grade Sunday School Teacher . She was a Teacher at Colonial Heights Middle School for a number of years, and was instrumental in founding the transition and Academy Programs at Colonial Heights High School.

Mrs. Rager is survived by her husband, Burton L. Rager, two daughters Nicole R. Butt and husband Aaron of Scottsville, VA., Erica-Leigh Rager of Colonial Heights. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald T. and Dallas Gates of Colonial Heights. Her brother and Sister-in-Law, Keith Gates and wife Patty of Prince George, a sister and brother in-law, Allison Krupp and Husband Bert of Colonial Heights. Also survived by five nephews and one niece.

A funeral service will be Saturday July 3, 2004 at 11 am at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 3110 Greenwood Ave., Colonial Heights. with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Ginn officiating. Burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. Friday evening there will be a celebration service at 7:00pm at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the June 2005 Starlight Crusade at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.

Ragland Jr., Carlton Wayne

Carlton "Wayne" Ragland Jr. 44, of Colonial Heights died Monday March 7, 2005 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his father, Carlton Wayne Ragland Sr. and a half sister Kay Frances Bailey. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights and was a maintenance man for B.I. Chemical in Petersburg. He is survived by his wife Crystal Traylor Ragland, four children, Ben Ragland, Jourdan E. Ragland, Timothy L. Ragland and Tyler L. Ragland, his mother Joy Frances Williamson and brother James Edward Ragland, both of Big Island VA, half brothers and sister, Rodgers Bailey of SC, Lisa Ragland of Brookneal VA, Robert Ragland of Lynchburg VA Mickey Ragland of Lynchburg, Va. and a step brother and step sisters Joseph F. Marshall Jr of Colonial Heights VA Carol Creasey and Connie Barricks and his grandmother Louise Hall of Lynchburg VA, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 PM at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home and Crematory 2033 Boulevard, with the Dr. Gary Burden and the Rev Jerry Parker officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until service time. A trust fund for the Ragland children will be set up at a later date.

Sakis, Sr., Theodore "Ted" Thomas

VIRGINIA BEACH - Theodore 'Ted' Thomas Sakis, Sr., 82, passed away on Mon., Oct. 22, 2007. He was a retired Salesman for many businesses in the Tidewater area, most notably for Price's Appliance Store. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Kalliope Livadaras Sakis and Nicholas Sakis.

Ted was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 40 years, was a member of Ruth Masonic Lodge No. 89, a member of the Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Shrine and it's Legion of Honor. He was a 50 plus year member of the Red Cross where here chaired many of their Blood Drives, a member of the American Legion, and was a 75 year member of the Sons of the American Legion. He was also a U. S. Navy veteran of W. W. II.

He is survived by three sons, Theodore Stephen Sakis, Sr. and his wife, Deborah of Chesapeake, Chris Sakis and his wife, Vivian of New Milford, Conn., Theodore Sakis, Jr. and his wife, Maria of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Deborah John and her husband, Paul of Norfolk, Kathy Ringer and her husband, Joseph of Coinjock, N.C., and Deborah Williams and her husband, Ronald of Smithfield, VA; three sisters, Virginia 'Ginny' S. Martin of Virginia Beach, Mary S. Cullop of Norfolk, and Elizabeth S. McDonald of Rockville, MD; eleven grandchildren, Kara-Leigh, Amber, Joshua, Theodore Stephen, Jr., Kelly, Christopher, Elena, Rylee, Lee, Becky, and Stacy; three great grandchildren; and countless friends he lovingly served.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Mon., Oct. 29, 2007 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Norfolk by Pastor James O'Connor. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 3 until 4 p.m. for visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 6001 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23505.
